MATCH REPORT
The New Zealand Captain, Stephen Fleming, won the toss and elected to field first on what looked like a good wicket to bowl on. But the West Indian Batsmen proved his theory wrong with Chris Gayle hitting sixes all over the park. They reached their 50 partnership in 4.1 overs, with Gayle getting 45 of them. He reached his 50 in just 21 deliveries. But he finally got run out, on that score. Brian Lara entered the stadium, and in his first six deliveries he hit three boundaries over cover off the back foot, two boundaries to long on, and i six over square leg, but he finally got stumped in his flurry of runs for 28. The West Indians reached their hundred of just 7.5 overs and looked in total control. Their final total 2/138, was the biggest score of the Competition up to that game.
New Zealand had a big task ahead of them, needing 13.8 runs an over, and Craig McMillan got them off to a great start, hitting two 6's over cover, one 6 over Square Leg, one boundary to point and one to square leg just in the first over. McMillan's dominating form continued hitting 1 more six this time over the bowlers head. The West Indies first wicket was that of Stephen Fleming for only 9 runs. The next wicket to fall was Nathan Astle who was bowled a beautiful leg cutter, which pitched outside off stump and hit middle and off. Hurley was brought into the attack to stem the run flow and he did a good job of it, and in the process picking up the dangerous wicket of McMillan for 45 runs. The rest of the overs were bowled by spinners, and they did a job, slowing the run rate and picking up wickets. New Zealand's 100 runs came of 8.5 and the game was over, with New Zealand needing 39 off the last over. They managed 17 including 2 sixes from Chris Cairns. The "Man of the Match" was awarded to Chris Gayle for his tremendous 50. West Indies now play Australia in the Final at Johannesburg.
