Story Ashes 2009: The Aussies Return- *Updated*

You do know that Brad Hogg is 36 this year right? So he'll be nearly 39 when the 2009 Ashes Series is on.

Wow:eek: Mindblowing presentation. England are in a heap already. Great start to the series:p

Hogg breaks the partnership- Bell gone

Brad Hogg has broken the partnership between Ian Bell and Alastair Cook with a fantastic quicker ball. Hogg got the edge and Ronchi snapped up the catch. Bell had a start and was looking comfortable before falling for 25. England need Flintoff to bat with Cook for a while, if he fails, England are going to be in big trouble.

Glorious 50 for Alastair Cook

Alastair Cook has made another test match half century, his 2nd ashes half century and a well deserved one. Cook has battled hard, and with wickets falling around him could easily have given his wicket away aswell. Cook's fifty came up off 104 balls. The Australian bowlers made it hard for Cook, restricting his driving, and with the mid on and mid off performing well, Cook failed to get any straight drives away. Cook will now be hoping to bat through the innings and get a big score.

Failure for Big Fred

Andrew Flintoff has dissapointed with the bat once more, only managing to score 13 runs in a situation where England were relying on him to score some runs. Flintoff was in fact batting quite well up until his dismissal, played 2 flashing cover drives for 4 and a few nice shots off his legs for singles. It was Brett Lee who got the wicket, he got the ball full and straight and Flintoff tried to work it off his pads missed it and left it for an easy umpire decsion. England 131/5.

Mustard and Broad fail to put England in big big trouble

Wicket-keeper Phil Mustard and useful all-rounder Stuart Broad have both failed with the bat. This leaves England in a dire situation at 149/7. Phil Mustard was the first to go, playing the wrong line to Shaun Tait and getting clean bowled. The young fast bowler then dealt with Broad 2 balls later, again clean bowled, but this time with a fantastic swinging yorker at 95mph. England are in deep trouble now.

Even deeper trouble for England as Cook goes

The only rearguard attack for England, Alastair Cook has been dismissed. Trying to work Brett Lee away on the leg-side just mis-timed it and lobbed an easy catch to the man at short square leg. Cooks magnificent innings of 63 comes to an end, and its one that England couldnt have been without. A useful innings from Cook, but he had to bat through.

England's dismal first innings comes to an end

England have been bowled out by Australia on the first day of a test match for 157. Alastair Cook provided the only rearguard innings but there was dissapointment from the rest of the batting order. Further dissapointment for Owais Shah and Andrew Flintoff has put doubts about their places in the batting order, which could see either Luke Wright or Joe Denly come into the side. There were no heroics from the tailenders, with Harmison falling for 2 and Hoggard getting run out without facing a ball. England now need to bat well to give themselves a chance in this match.

Early Breakthrough for England as Hoggard strikes

Matthew Hoggard has shown why he is still in the test side with a fantastic early wicket for England. It was vintage Hoggard, setting Rogers up with 3 balls angled across him and then hitting him with the inswinger that beat the bat and crushed the wickets. It's not the best start for Australia who will hope to bat better than England. 5/1

Both Openers gone as Hoggard strikes again

Another classic Hoggard dismissal as he clean bowls the 2nd Aussie opener, Phil Jaques for 1. Australia are now 7/2 and look in deep trouble and will need former captain and current captain to form a big partnership. It was a similar dismissal to the one that got Rogers. The ball swinging back in and hitting Jaques middle stump after he played the wrong line.

England on cloud 9 as Ponting falls cheaply

Ricky Ponting has dissapointed his fans with a cheap dismissal that has put Australia under deep pressure. It was Hoggard who struck again with a ball that left Ponting late taking the edge which was well caught at 2nd slip by James Benning. Skipper Michael Clarke is joined at the wicket by Brad Hodge who will be desperate to silence the critics. Here's hotspot's view of Ponting's dismissal:

Thats all we have time for here. Time for the tea break after a very exciting 2nd session. Australia end the session on 18/3, with Michael Clarke unbeaten on 9 and Brad Hodge 1not out. Join us after tea.

Apart from Cook, rubbish batting by England.
Australia have started badly as well though. Hopefully the England bowlers can blast through the middle order.

Great work Dan. KUTGW

Superb start by England. They have come back hard at the Aussies. Let's see if the English seamers can continue this great bowling. And also superb presentation Dan. I am loving this story :)

Wow, England bowled out for a measly 157. But now the Aussies are dropping like flies. This match is going to be finished in 2 days! What pitch are you playing on? Green?

Yeh, it's a green lords pitch. The first innings is pretty similar to the first game of the 2005 ashes. Hopefully i'll bat abit better in the 2nd innings :p.
