Hopes opted for a bit of new ball spin, against conditions, but Smith can't help himself. Nothing special about the ball except that it wasn't there for the dirty slog. It's okay because he's replaced by another Smith.

Our batting couldn't be any worse if we reversed the order and opened with Hazlewood and Lalor. What a joke our top order has been.

Had a feeling that knock by Dan Smith was a one off, has done jack all since then. Once again left to Smith, Henriques and Nevill to do the job.

Was the pitch itself a bit slow? It appears to be so.

It's probably only due to the fact he was playing against NSW so they had to watch what he did. Got a sneaking suspicion if Cutting was bowling to a different state that attention wouldn't be there.

Yep this is the traditional way to be selected - do well vs NSW (or maybe in a Shield final or against the touring team). Can't remember too many precise examples, but I remember the concept from the 90s when the Waugh bros and Tubby etc. were with NSW and they were the power state. It's like a prospect can't be proven to be good until he's played against the best and they've seen him in the flesh. That's a bit on the cynical side, but it kinda makes sense.

It holds weight while NSW are basically an international side. At the moment it's just parochialism.

The other states should be happy with playing a NSW B-team all season. Would be a few embarrassing scorelines if they were missing 7 of their best against any state, let alone a full strength NSW one.

Tassie were slowly fighting their way out of trouble after being 1/11 a short time ago, now I look and McKay's picked up two more and Wells retired hurt. Pitch must be as green as the dutch countryside.

Clint McKay rips through the Tasmanian top order with 4/35. :thumbs

Is he a chance of being selected for New Zealand?

Well I'm not sure a NSW B team is particularly easy to beat either :p

Let's say Warner, Hughes, Khawaja, Katich, Clarke, Watson, Haddin, Hauritz, Cummins, Copeland and Bollinger was your Aus XI, then NSW B would still have:

Phil Jaques
Steve Smith
Steve O'Keefe
Brett Lee
Moises Henriques
Josh Hazlewood
Stuart Clark
Beau Casson
All those guys have played for Australia. Nic Maddinson is on the way chosen for Aus A, Burt Cockley was selected as a backup for an Aus tour once.

And don't start me on all the guys who have left NSW because they couldn't get a game. What are the other states doing??
