Thorpe is a class act, and one of the most consistent players you will see. He always performs under pressure. That is a very important thing.

Ponting might not be that great against spin, but he is a one hell of a batsman. He can really dominate the opposition with some aggressive batting. But he also has a lot of control and can play according to the situation.

Also the fact that Lara cant win matches is simply stupid. Its not his fault that he doesnt play for a great team like Australia. As an individual he has been a treat for the eyes.

Dont get me wrong, I too am a big fan of Rahul Dravid, as he probably the only consistent batsman in the Indian team currently. He is very reliable and like Thorpe can bat even under pressure. But he doesnt feature in my top 5.

althought Thorpe is a very good player, The Wall is far ahead in every aspect as the stats show:

overall
Mat I NO Runs HS1 HS2 HS3 Ave 100 50 0

Dravid 89 151 18 7696 270 233 222 57.86 20 36 5
Thorpe 98 177 26 6636 200* 138 138 43.94 16 38 12

against top team (v Australia)

Dravid 18 33 4 1480 233 180 92 51.03 2 8 2
Thorpe 16 31 4 1235 138 123 114* 45.74 3 8 2

(against each other)

Dravid (vEng) 9 13 1 911 217 148 115 75.91 3 4 0
Thorpe (vInd) 5 9 1 283 89 62 45 35.37 0 2 0

(home)
Dravid 42 72 7 3343 222 200* 180 51.43 8 17 1
Thorpe 47 83 9 3235 138 138 124 43.71 7 20 7

(away)
Dravid 47 79 11 4353 270 233 217 64.01 12 19 4
Thorpe 51 94 17 3401 200* 123 119* 44.16 9 18 5

there really is no comparison imho.

i agree with vaughn on ponting and lara being better than dravid. ponting is, at the moment, the 2nd best test batsman ever produced by australia.

Ponting is a better bat than dravid because he is aggressive. In tests, Dravid outcompetes ponting. In ODI's, ponting is a bit ahead of Dravid. Dravid is synonymous to consistency and near-perfect technique, just like Sachin and Lara. He may not be as entertaining as these two, but you ask any bowler in the world to name one batsman they think are dangerous and more often you will see Dravid appearing in that list. If that does not allow him into top 5, its a pity on how people judge batting.
