Best Captain:

Ricky Ponting - Ricky is one of the best captains that Australia have produces. No doubt having a successfull team helps but the thing that impresses about Ricky is the fact that he backs his player like he did for Symonds in 2003 World Cup and also he will lead by example and take the attack to opposition. Being best batsmen in world also helps.

Worst Captain:

Shoiab Malik - Probably the weakest capatin for Pakistan in long time. By the look of things on filed looks like he does not have player backing. Also is not a certainity in test matches himself. Other thing is that he does not utilizes his resource well like he could have bowled himeslf more in India-Pakistan series. Does not lead from front. Could have opened in ODIs when side needed partnet for Butt but did not do that. Is not aggressive in field placements as well.

Best Captain:

Mahela Jayawardena
- Has a pretty successful team under him and is a fantastic captain and brilliant role model. Always leads with the bat and sets good fields, and makes good bowling changes. Is the best captain in the world imo, followed closely by Michael Vaughan.

Worst Captain:

Andrew Flintoff- Led his team to a dismal 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia, when Strauss should really have been captain. Leads with the ball, but isnt an effective enough captain, often sets poor fields, which only improved when he was off the field and Strauss was in charge. Great player, dissapointing captain imo.

oh common, to early to Shoiab Malik is the worst, certinly not good though.

Best Captain - Imran Khan

No other captain had as much power as Imran Khan. He had complete control of his squad and utilised his players impecably. He has a natural eye for talent and lead from the front. He is one of the greatest Pakistani cricketers and definately the best all rounder. He also led Pakistan to victory in the '92 World Cup.

Worst Captain
- Update Soon...

Need to perhaps specify that it's current captains. Seems to be the case with your selections.

Now they Fleming retired, I have to say Vaughan is the smartest captain around. Ponting has been backed by the best players. He's a great captain, but you see at times him do some really stupid stuff.

Worst, well from what i've seen, I have to say Smith on current form, and i'll get some stick for that. In the recent Test series, he wasn't impressive at all. Infact he would continually move fielders where the ball got hit the last ball and it would open up gaps. e hasn't been leading with the bat either recently. I havn't seen Malik captain yet, so maybe i'd have him ahead.

He did open that one game didn't he? And it is too early to say that Malik is the worst captain ever...

I may get some stick for this but in my opinon, Ponting isn't a good captian. He hasn't had do a great deal of thinking during his time as Australian captian since when in the field he just needs to set aggressive fields and the likes of Warne and McGrath have done the rest and when he's had a problem, those bowlers have been able to help him through their own accord. I remember in the 2005 Ashes series where at Trent Bridge where England just needed 129 to win and when Warne came on Ponting never gave him a Silly point and Warne sort of took over and set the field himself and gave himself a silly point and the first ball was a bat-pad to silly point so that is one example of Ponting's captiancy. Lets see if he proves me wrong now with those two great bowlers gone and a fairly inexperienced bowling attack.

I agree that Ponting is not the best captain in the world, but I feel that he has improved over time, and is definitely not a bad one today. He has had some support, but he is improving like I said, and his captaincy seems to be pretty decent these days. Certainly on results alone, he is the best in the world, but as we all know, statistics never tell the whole story. Vaughan is certainly one of the best captains but his batting is substandard.

Already has.

I'm sorry, I detest threads like this. Listen people, you MUST know something about cricket.

You can't tell (most of the time) if a captain is bad or good watching the TV. The way you tell is actually playing with them. We have no idea who is setting the fields, whats going through their heads, what the team talk was last night.

Just leave them be. They are captains for a reason.

Captainy is just not about results, ponting did not have to build ateam
he already had aworld class team,if he stays after hayden, glichrist and other retire and builds anew team the he can be classified as agood captain still
then he is average

Vaughan's batting substandard?

Its worst than that!

Do you actually watch test cricket ?
Vaughan`s batting in Test Cricket is as classy as it gets.

Worst Captain:
Shoiab Malik

You are judging him by the performance of just one series !
Not fair.

Best Captain :

Stephen Fleming
Without doubt he has to be the best.
He handled his limited resources in a way no other captain has.[till date]Was a fantastic batsman too and always lead from the front.

Worst Captain :

Sachin Tendulkar
The batting great could hardly be called as a captain.
Tendulkar apparently lost his form during captaincy and led India to their most marvellous defeats. He could also not handle his bowlers well.

Scion_skid how can you rate Malik poorly after a bad series. Are you forgetting who captained Pakistan to the final of the T20 World Cup? Maybe after Pakistan's next series we can come to an early conclusion but not yet.
