Best innings by a batsman in a losing cause

What do you think is the best innings by a batsman in which the team lost? Mine would be Smith's 141 vs England and Sachin's 175 against Australia.

Sachin's century against Pakistan in tests has to be right up there. Although when I think about 'centuries in a losing cause' my mind automatically goes to the fourth innings of a match where someone almost gets the team home. I guess going by the general statement, 'the best innings in a losing cause', I'd have to rate the multitude of Lara's double centuries and the whole tour to Sri Lanka in general.

Sangakkara's 192 against Australia at Hobart is a contender. He got Sri Lanka really close to a massive target of 507 (lost by 95 runs). If someone else had hung around who knows (3 ducks in middle order).

Oh and the big thing: He was given a shocker by Rudi K.

Most of Andy Flower's career really. Special mention to that test against South Africa.

He would have brought them home with Malinga supporting him well on the other side. Too bad he got a bad call.

I'm afraid I dont get why Sachin's 175 in a meaningless one dayer rates ahead of some of history's famous innings. Sanga's 192 was great, Lara'a SL knocks, Gilchrist 133 v England, Ponting's superb batting vs SA at the MCG in 2009.

You have to see the innings within the context of the game itself, especially because within the heat of battle in a pressure situation, their mentality is the same and it doesn't matter whether only the match or the whole series hangs in the balance. As for your examples, those are in Test cricket, I'm sure those citing the Tendulkar innings refer to it as the best in ODI, not both combined.

If we talk about One Day Sachin 175 from losing side is one of the best knocks imo. I dont get why calling it meaningless. It's not like Indian batsman were scoring and they helped Tendulkar or they were batting first.

Spot on!

I think by meaningless, he meant that the series itself wasn't a very important one and that if I'm not mistaken, the series had already been decided.

No,
India and Australia level the series 2-2. So India needed to win this match in 5th ODI to stay in series and gain lead and hence it was the most important match of series.

Oh ok! Well I agree with you a 100% either way, series in the balance or already lost, the innings is (one of)the best in a losing cause in ODIs

I dont think they would have sealed the victory even if he wasn't given out, the target was a massive one.
