SUMMARY
Carlton and Essendon clashes are always close, and playing each other in the AFL's Rivalry Round really builds up on the tension and intencity of the teams going into the match. Last year's Round 3 match between these two bitter rivals was a great example, after Carlton came back to win by 3 points after trailing by 48 points at half time, which is arguably Carlton's best ever comeback. Brendan Fevola was the star in the same match last year, booting 8 goals in a half of football. Another good example of these two teams' close encounters was during last year's Round 16 clash, which was deemed as the 'Bryce Gibbs Cup'. The team battled it out quarter after quarter and the closing scoreline ended up on 105 points a piece, which meant that Carlton were favourites to grab Bryce Gibbs even after the draw. Finally, last year's Round 20 clash between the two rivals saw Essendon edge in front in the final quarter to be victors by 10 points.
The two teams will hopefully continue their string of close matches with another close and edge-of-your seat match here tonight, to give their season a boost in the right direction. Both teams have everything to play for with a spot in the Top 8 up for grabs, and tonight's contest will surely be even, with both teams sitting on 1.80 odds. The game will be a thriller! Don't miss it!

QUARTER 1
Essendon 2.4 (16)
Carlton 4.2 (26)

The key to a good quarter is applying the pressure and that is exactly what Carlton did to take the lead after the first term of play. Essendon had control early on with Lucas and Lloyd getting plenty of balls delivered in theri direction, but the experienced Bret Thornton kept the dangerous Scott Lucas to only 4 touches for the quarter, while the Irishman in Setanta O'hAilpin kept Matthew Lloyd to 6 disposals for the quarter, with his aggresive attitude and tight playing style. As well as keeping his direct opponent to only 4 touches for the quarter, Carlton's key defender Bret Thornton racked up a total of 9 disposals for the quarter, and was easily Carlton's best alongside team-mate Ryan Houlihan, who managed 9 disposals of his own. The scoring came about after Carlton conceded a point from an easy-shot at goal, and immediately bounced back when Nick Stevens scored the first goal of the match 6 minutes into the quarter. Stanton then replied with a goal of his own to bring the Bombers back in winnable range, but it was a flourish of goals from Brad Fisher (who kicked two for the quarter), and Marc Murphy to bring the Blues in front by 10 points going into the second. It is by no means a great lead, with still three quarters of footy to be played, but it is a lead nonetheless which I am sure Brett Ratten would be very proud of. Brendan Fevola has had a quiet first quarter with only 3 disposals for the quarter, and it is unsure whether that is a good or bad thing for the Bombers.

QUARTER 2
Essendon 2.6 (18)
Carlton 7.7 (49)

Great defensive pressure from the Blues saw Essendon trail by 31 points at half time. Carlton denied Essendon a single goal in the quarter, and only conceded 2 points in the process. Once Carlton had posession of the ball, they did not play around with it and got straight to the point - delivering it inside 50. The stats clearly show this, with the Blues racking up 20 more disposals for the game than the Bombers, and entering their attacking 50 five more times than Essendon. With Carlton's 68 marks to Essendon's 47, it clearly shows that Carlton held the ball responsibly and did not rush their kicks or plays, which has not been seen from Carlton in recent weeks - showing that the young side has matured as a team. The Blues also applied 7 more tackles than the Bombers which shows that they are willing to attack the game head-on and have an aggresive approach to the match. Although Brad Fisher only had 3 touches for the quarter, one of those touches resulted in a goal to put the Blues in front by more and was the beginning of a mini-onslaught by the Blue Baggers. Simon Wiggins and Marc Murphy followed in Fisher's examples with goals of their own, which brought Carlton to 3 goals for the quarter against Essendon's zero. Chris Judd had another quarter worth mentioning with 12 more disposals to add to his tally, and Walker supported him with his defensive run who racked up 9 disposals of his own. Unfortunately for the Blues, Brendan Fevola did not touch the ball a single time in that quarter which show signs that he is not as fit as first thought. Paul Bower and Richard Hadley are also having quiet games with only 4 touches of their own. Brent Stanton for the Bombers has already managed 22 touches after only a half of footy, so the Blues will look to shut him down for the next half.

QUARTER 3
Essendon 3.8 (26)
Carlton 8.10 (58)

A very low-scoring quarter, with only 17 points being added to the scoreboard, but the Blues managed to win the quarter by a point which increases the lead even more. Jobe Watson was a star for the Bombers in their defensive fifty, and when the ball was delivered to Carlton's attack Jobe Watson was always the one to deny them of an important goal. Essendon held the ball a lot more than Carlton did in that quarter, but unfortunately for the Essendon faithful they could not find a way to convert their posessions into goals, and only managed 1 for the quarter, coming from the boot of Adam McPhee early in the quarter. It was a very ugly quarter of footy, with the ball being turned over at every disposal, and it looked like the Dons had the quarter won by 5 points until Chris Judd took a mark deep inside 50 which he converted into a Carlton goal with 3 minutes left on the clock. Brent Stanton continued his magnificent match with 11 disposals for the quarter to bring his tally to 33, and Watson had a 13-disposal quarter to bring up 29 touches after 3 quarters of footy.
Essendon now need 32 points in a single quarter for a win, and it looks like Lloyd and Lucas would have to step up to bring home a magnificent win. It will be tough though, with Fevola looking to fire up in the last quarter after only 7 touches for the match, and with Chris Judd on fire with 25 disposals.

QUARTER 4
Essendon 6.13 (49)
Carlton 9.10 (64)

Essendon obviously went into the last quarter believing that they had a chance to win it, and right from the word go they dominated the centre bounces, clearances and basic posession getting. Five early behinds were registered for the Bombers, and they were looking extremely dangerous in the centre of the ground. Brent Stanton led from the front with 40 disposals to his name and Watson and McPhee supported him with 36 and 31 disposals respectively. Alwyn Davey scored the first goal of the quarter much to Essendon's delight, after a great snap under pressure. Matthew Lloyd was the next to snag a goal - his only for the night - and soon after him Alwyn Davey scored another wonder goal from the boundaty. Essendon was running out of time but the Carlton players were under immense pressure, but with 4 minutes to go, Eddie Betts sealed the deal for the Blues after he snagged his only for the night, to give Carlton it's second win in three matches. No real Carlton player had an answer to Essendon's sudden onslaught, with the exception of Jarrad Waite who racked up 10 disposals and Andrew Carrazzo with his own 13. A very dissapointing last quarter from the Blues will give them quite a spray from Brett Ratten, but a win's a win and they will be happy regardless of their poor last quarter.

FINAL SCORE
Essendon 6.13 (49)
Carlton 9.10 (64)

After playing a magnificent last quarter, time unfortunately ran out for the Bombers and saw them lose after putting up a galiant effort in the last quarter. Brent Stanton was the star for the home team with 40 posessions to his name, which is surely a career high for the mid-fielder. Chris Judd did a good job on Stanton, with 33 of his own disposals to lead Carlton from the front. After looking like a dud at the start, tonight's Rivalry Round match between Carlton and Essendon proved to be a very exciting, and there are very positive signs from both clubs.

FORM
Carlton: WLW

SUMMARY
Collingwood will be favourites going into the match, but don't count out the Carlton boys as they will look to carry on their form from last week's clash against Essendon in the AFL Rivalry round. The Blues went into the last quarter confidently with a lead of 32 points, but fell off in the final term and only ended up victors by 15 points. The coaching staff and panel have reviewed last week's woeful last quarter and the Blues have been working hard on their stamina and fitness for all four quarters - so that is something that they will definitely be looking to improve on for today's match.
Collingwood are coming off an impressive win over the out of form Tigers, who proved to be a worthy match-up in the end. Alan Didak lead from the front with an amazing 39 disposals to his name, which consisted of 31 kicks, 12 marks and 8 handballs. Though he had somewhat of a quiet week last night, the Blues will be focusing their defence on Collingwood's Anthony Rocca, who if left alone will cause an excessive amount of damage to the opposition's score line. Chris Judd will also be one of the major targets of the night, after his brilliant display of 33 disposals last week against Essendon.
Although Collingwood are favourites, Carlton are known to fire up against the Magpies, regardless of their ladder position, so this match is set to be a blockbuster!

QUARTER 1
Carlton 4.2 (26)
Collingwood 4.1 (25)

The first quarter of the match was as good as it gets - thanks to much defensive and offensive pressure from both sides and very great deliveries into the attacking 50. The Blues showed their intention straight away as Nick Stevens collected the ball from the tap-out, who then kicked it to Brad Fisher outside 50. Brendan Fevola found the ball in his hands from a chip kick from Brad Fisher and Carlton snagged the first goal after only about 40 seconds of play. The Blues got their second after a magnificent snap at goal from Brendan Fevola gave them hope for a massive upset, but it was short-lived as Collingwood bounced back with a goals of their own from defender Tyson Goldsack. Kade Simpson came off the interchange bench for a fatigued Andrew Walker, and immediately got his hands on the ball and converted his run-and-carry into a goal to edge the Blues closer in front. O'Bree and Iles spoiled Carlton's party however, as they scored their own goals in the 13th and 16th minutes respectively, and Alan Didak slotted another one through the big sticks to cap off a good quarter for the Pies. Brendan Fevola showed his class once more with another goal in the first term to bring the Blues back in front by a single point, which is a massive improvement from last week's woeful 7 touch match. Fev is on fire, and Didak and Lockyer for the Pies have their fair share of the ball so the next three quarters of the match are looking to be a great and exciting contest.

QUARTER 2
Carlton 5.6 (36)
Collingwood 9.6 (60)

An awfully poor quarter from Carlton is the cause of this biased scoreboard at half-time. Granted, a few of the Umpire's decisions were not as accurate as they should have been, with Carlton getting the raw end of the deal in this quarter, but that is no excuse for the disappointing performance from the Carlton boys. Brendan Fevola was the only Carlton player to register any scores in the quarter, kicking the Blues' only goal for the quarter and registering 3 behinds, which were Carlton's only scores for the quarter along with one rushed behind. The only Carlton stand-out for the quarter was young Shaun Grigg in the back-line, who shut down Collingwood's Chris Egan to only 1 disposal for the match thus far, which proved to be helpful to Carlton. Collingwood on the other hand had many stand outs, like Alan Didak who had another wonderful quarter, Scott Pendlebury, and skipper Scott Burns. Brown, O'Bree, Cloke and Thomas were Collingwood's goal scorers for the quarter, with Brown being the dual scorer for the pies. The reason Collingwood is ahead by this much at half time is because of the lack of intensity the Blues have shown thus far, resulting them in trailing by 20 odd disposals at the main break - something they would wish to improve on for the next two quarters.

QUARTER 3
Carlton 7.8 (50)
Collingwood 11.7 (73)

The Blues will be getting a bit of spray from the coach after this quarter. Even though the Blues managed to win the quarter by a single point, they wasted their chances in front of goal and trail will require to create a comeback of 23 points to win this match. No goals were scored within the first half of the quarter, but Martin Clarke broke the goal drought with his first goal of the match to bring the Magpies closer towards the 4 points. Jordan Russel provided resistance from Carlton with his own goal to settle the score but it was all to no avail as Ben Johnson scored his own goal 2 minutes later. The remainder of the quarter was fought out hard but Eddie Betts snuck in a goal with a minute to go to win the quarter for the Blues. Nick Stevens is having another stellar game for Carlton with 22 disposals after 3 quarters, while Alan Didak from Collingwood has already racked up an amazing 30 disposals for the first three quarters, with still another quarter of exciting football to go. All seems lost for the Blues but they are still within a slight chance, so expect some fireworks for the last quarter from the Carlton boys!

QUARTER 4
Carlton 11.13 (79)
Collingwood 14.11 (95)

A much better last quarter saw the Blues come within sniffing range of a win but unfortunately it was not to be due to their poor second term. Carlton were on fire from the word go, with coach Brett Ratten obviously ordering his mid-field to attack whenever they had the ball and to not mess around with it in the defensive 50. This tactic seemed to work as the ball entered Carlton's attacking 50 a lot more times than previously before, which resulted in a few behinds in the early goings of the quarter, but despite their many early shots on goal, O'Bree and Reid from the Magpies were the first to register goals for the quarter, and all hope seemed lost for Carlton until an unlikely act from Eddie Betts inspired his team to step up regardless of the score line. Eddie collected the ball from the boundary line and with his amazing footwork and agility managed to avoid any Collingwood defence and slotted home his second goal for the night. This caused a spark to ignite in the Carlton camp - which proved to be a bad thing for the Collingwood boys as Brendan Fevola booted home his 5th for the night after an amazing display from the big man. Brad Fisher was the next Blue to kick a maximum, and a comeback was on the cards until Travis Cloke stole the ball and kicked his second to drown any hopes of a win from the Carlton faithful. Brad Fisher managed to boot another goal for the Blues but with only 10 seconds left on the clock a win was impossible and Carlton was forced to suffer a heart-breaking defeat at the hands of their greatest rivals.

01-fevola.jpg

Brendan Fevola was Carlton's best with 20 disposals and 5 goals

FINAL SCORE
Carlton 11.13 (79)
Collingwood 14.11 (95)

A superb final quarter was unfortunately not enough for the Blues to grab their 3rd win of the season, due to their disappointing effort in the second quarter, conceding 5 goals and only kicking 1. Positives can be taken from this loss however, like Brendan Fevola's in-form performance and Nick Stevens' 26 disposal effort. Alan Didak absolutely dominated the middle with 34 disposals, along with Scott Pendlebury's 37 touches for the match. Collingwood's ability to apply pressure when needed and skill levels proved to be too much for Carlton, who slumped to a disappointing yet respectable 16 point loss. The match lived up to it's expectations, and we will see what affect it has on next week's clashes as both teams battle to get a permanent place in the 8.

Waite Out, Jamison In

By Seymour Butts
11:23 AM Tuesday 15th April, 2008

AFTER tearing cartilage in his right knee last week in the Round 4 clash against Collingwood, Jarrad Waite was forced to be sidelined for the remainder of the game and is estimated to miss the remainder of the season due to his injury. This has forced the Carlton board and coaching staff to put Waite on the long-term injury list, and will keep monitor of his progress through the recovery and rehabilitation phases.
This will cause a major disruption in Carlton's backline, and the injury will have a major affect on Carlton's playing performance as Jarrad Waite was a good leader on the field.

But we must look at the positives and towards our future, because where there is bad news there is also good news.

22 year old Michael Jamison has been promoted to the Senior playing list after consistent positive performances in the reserves side in the FullBack position. The Carlton coaching staff are very excited about the young rookie's development and have said that after his recent performances in the VFL he was always in consideration for being called up for the senior side, and that Waite's injury was the main factor in the decision to promote the young star.

Michael Jamison will be making his debut during Round 5's clash with Melbourne, and Brett Ratten is confident that he will do as good as a job as Waite has been doing, if not better.

Injury woes causes more trouble for Blues

By Ivana Humpalot
1:13 PM Monday 21st April, 2008

CARLTON have suffered another major blow today after Andrew Walker pulled out of today's training after doing some strain to his back. This is part of a string of bad news for Carlton regarding injuries after losing Matthew Kreuzer, Jarrad Waite and now Andrew Walker. It is unsure who will take his place in the side against Melbourne but it is being decided today.

Walker is estimated to miss 40 days.

More injury woes for Carlton as Walker injures his back at training

When selecting my line-up, I tried to put Dennis Armfield in the empty slot vacated by Walker, and then a runtime error came up from FFFX which caused the program to close.
I thought it was nothing so I rebooted the program and it seemed that it had skipped my selecting line-up option, so I went to play the match and it seemed Walker was put in the starting line-up. I am not sure what problems this will cause but I am sure it will be many.
I have also recently lost a bit of passion and encouragement to do any updates because I believe I have failed to generate enough interest from you guys and I find it tedious and tiresome that I must write match reports everytime I wish to play FFFX.

Call me a crybaby, but for these reasons and more I have decided to discontinue this gaming diary. Not that anybody cares but I have just found it to be a chore rather than a hobby, so I am sorry to the few of you that read it but I am forced to stop this and start a totally new game, which I will not be making a story out of.
Hopefully I will make a story on something else some time in the future, but I am just looking to enjoy the game without the hassle of updating for now.

See you guys soon.

Ibitmybut added 0 Minutes and 50 Seconds later...

It seems I am right about the problems. When trying to play a match it immediately comes up with a runtime error, so I am forced to stop the story regardless of passion. I'm sorry to you few followers, but hopefully I will be returning with a new, better story some time in the near future.

I will be closing this thread, if you have any thing to say you may PM me, whether it be to vent your anger or to just say anything really.

Thanks guys, I've enjoyed it :)

Yeah thats what happened to my...im taking im taking a break. but next time mate make the updates shorter than it wont be as tiresome

Well that does suck mate, but im sure you'll come back with a better story then this one. Although keep the same layout and stuff, coz this story was awsome.
