Key Match-Ups

The big task that confronts West Coast is stopping Fremantle's two big forwards in Matthew Pavlich and Chris Tarrant. With Adam Hunter out with injury and Brent Staker suspended, the Eagles have lost two of their key key defenders, so Mitch Brown, in just his eighth game, faces the massive task of stopping Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich.

The midfield battle will be interesting as usual, and the match up of Josh Carr and Daniel Kerr will be no exception, with the two of the toughest midfielders in the game facing off against each other.

Dockers take derby

FREMANTLE won the enthralling 27th Western Derby on Saturday afternoon, overrunning West Coast 15.10 (100) to 13.14 (92). The Dockers built a 27-point lead in the second term and although West Coast refused to roll over, the Eagles never regained the lead despite going down by just 8 points.

In just his third game, Rhys Palmer had a stellar game for Fremantle with 13 touches in the second term before finishing with 34 in a game that earned him his first Ross Glendinning Medal. Forward Chris Tarrant kicked four goals on Darren Glass before half-time. Brett Jones kept Tarrant to just four disposals after half-time when he was swapped onto him. A shared effort from Mitch Brown and Darren Glass kept Fremantle captain and star forward Matthew Pavlich goalless for the match.

Murphy_derby08_246.jpg

While their midfield performances have been good all year, West Coast's forward line performed much better than the previous two rounds, with full forward Quinten Lynch and second-gamer Ben McKinley finishing with three goals each.

West Coast have gone into their last three matches missing key players in Adam Hunter, Josh Kennedy and Shannon Hurn, but their lack of defensive experience wasn't a factor last night, with Will Schofield, Mitch Brown and Matthew Spangher, all with just 13 games between them kept Fremantle talls Chris Tarrant, Matthew Pavlich and Ryan Murphy to six goals.

Fremantle now sit atop the AFL ladder as the only undefeated team in the competition, whilst the Eagles have slidden down to 10th on the ladder, after finishing round one on top spot.

I actually didn't move or delete the photbucket images, I just haven't put them up yet, because Photoshop keeps crashing whenever I try to save them. I would do them in paint, but you can't have transparency.

I'll try them again tonight, but if not then I'll put up stats in code or something and then replace them with the images when I get them back up. I'm planning reformatting my computer, as most of my programs either crash or take 9 hours to do anything.

Key Match-Ups

Another huge task for the West Coast defenders, as they have to stop the likes of Barry Hall, Michael O'Loughlin, Ryan O'Keefe, Nick Davis and Adam Goodes when he rotates in from the midfield. West Coast captain Darren Glass is the ideal match up for Barry Hall, and will try to use his strength to muscle Hall off the ball, while newbie Will Schofield has the mammoth task of stopping the great Michael O'Loughlin. Adam Goodes has been named at centre half back, and Mitch Brown, who kept Matthew Pavlich goalless last week, will play on Goodes in defence. Brett Jones will play on Nick Davis, and Adam Selwood (in defence) will get Ryan O'Keefe.

Daniel Kerr, now the best midfielder West Coast have got, will probably get the tag of Brett Kirk, but there's no expectation of a heavy tag when it comes to Kirk. Adam Selwood will most likely get Adam Goodes whenever he drifts up into the midfield, and Tyson Stenglein might get the job on Jude Bolton.

Swans storm home

The Sydney Swans booted the last four goals of the game to stop a courageous West Coast comeback, regain their lead and take out victory 16.14 (110) to 15.7 (97).

Daniel Kerr was brilliant for the Eagles, picking up 30 disposals, including 9 in an eventful third quarter which saw the Eagles pull in a 30-point defecit to trail by just 3 points at the final change. Kerr was also instrumental in the final term, which saw the Eagles kick the first three goals and take the lead for the first time since the 10-minute mark of the first quarter.

image.jpg

The scores were tied at 91 apiece 22 minutes into the final quarter and neither team looked like scoring, before Martin Mattner, running off half-back, booted 3 goals in quick succession to give the Swans not only the lead, but also the sealing goal.

Eagles captain Darren Glass started on Sydney's Barry Hall, while youngster Mitch Brown started on Adam Goodes. After Hall booted the first four goals of the game, Glass and Brown swapped opponents. Brown kept Hall goalless for the remainder of the game, while Goodes, who was kept possessionless until half time was well kept by both Glass and Brown before playing the majority of the second half in the midfield.

West Coast's injury list grew even longer, with Glass sustaining a serious knee injury in the last 10 minutes of the match, and had to be stretchered off the ground. He is expected to miss 10-12 weeks. With Adam Hunter (shoulder) and Brent Staker (suspension) already on the sidelines, West Coast are now without their three key defenders, and now must rely on youngsters Mitch Brown, Will Schofield and Matthew Spangher, who, after tonight, have played just 16 games between them.

This also means Brown, who was recruited primarily as a key forward prospect, will now play most of his games this season down back, as Josh Kennedy (broken collarbone) and Chad Jones (knee reconstruction) are also on the sidelines.

West Coast now sit 12th on the ladder, having lost their last three games.

Interesting Stats

West Coast are:
#1 in Disposals (1343)
#1 in Handballs (530)
#1 in Total Marks (380)
#1 in Contested Possessions (352)
#1 in Contested Marks (117)
#2 in Kicks (813)
#3 in Free Kicks For (45)
#5 in Inside 50s (209)
#6 in Hitouts (123)
#8 in Centre Clearances (66)
#10 in Clearances (120)

Whilst in the top ten in all the important stats, West Coast are somehow sitting 12th on the ladder, after three disappointing losses, which all involved a late comeback and fadeout from the Eagles.

Key Match-Ups

There are important match ups all over the ground, with players from both clubs looking to prevent their opponents from playing their natural game.

vs.
2008_treadrea_warren_th.jpg

Mitch Brown vs. Warren Tredrea

Mitch Brown is now the most experienced defender in the West Coast Eagles list, with Adam Hunter and Darren Glass both out with injury. In what will be just his tenth game, Brown faces the mammoth task of stopping Port Adelaide captain Warren Tredrea, who has 21 times more experience than Brown, although Brown has given away just one goal this year, playing on key forwards such as Daniel Bradshaw, Adam Goodes and Matthew Pavlich.

2008_lade_brendon_th.jpg

Dean Cox vs. Brendon Lade

Arguably the two best ruckmen in the competition will be facing off, with Dean Cox in stellar form, averaging over 20 disposals and 23 hitouts so far this season.

2008_KERRDaniel_thumb.jpg
vs.
2008_cornes_kane_th.jpg

Daniel Kerr vs. Kane Cornes

Kane Cornes will probably get the job on Daniel Kerr, who shoved his way into form last week, picking up 30 disposals opposed to Sydney's Brett Kirk.

2008_LYNCHQuinten_thumb.jpg
vs.
2008_cornes_chad_th.jpg

Quinten Lynch vs. Chad Cornes

Quinten Lynch will not only be looking to score goals this week, but to also stop the dominance of Port Adelaide's Chad Cornes. Lynch will need to provide a strong presence in the forward line for West Coast and make Cornes pay for his attacking style of play.

Eagles shut off the Power

The West Coast Eagles have held off a late surge by Port Adelaide to win 11.4 (70) to 8.13 (61). On a wet and windy day at Subiaco Oval, the Eagles were off to a flyer, booting the first three goals of the match, but both teams managed just seven goals each for the remainder of the game.

David Wirrpanda snagged the first goal in the opening minute and kicked his second five minutes later. He booted his third, and last, at the 15-minute mark, followed up five minutes later by a goal from Sam Butler.

Daniel Kerr, who was surprisingly not tagged, had 15 disposals by half time before finishing with 23 disposals and 2 goals. Matthew Priddis drew the tag of Kane Cornes, while Tyson Stenglein ran with Peter Burgoyne for the majority of the second half.

West Coast, missing Darren Glass, Adam Hunter, Brent Staker and Jaymie Graham through injury, went into the match with three young key defenders in Will Schofield, Matthew Spangher and first-gamer James Thomson, and a makeshift defender in Mitch Brown. The four defenders gave away just two goals between them.

PortWCE_246.jpg

West Coast's forward line failed to fire once again, with Quinten Lynch booting one, while Ben McKinley and Mark LeCras were kept goalless. Mitch Brown was thrown up forward late in the third quarter and kicked a goal. Unfortunately, with Chad Jones, Josh Kennedy, and swingman Adam Hunter out with injury, and now Quinten Lynch, who is suspended for two weeks for striking, West Coast are now stripped of big men up forward.
