Quarter Time

3copy-600x400.jpg

Quarter time at Subiaco Oval and it's the Eagles who lead Fremantle by twelve points. Fremantle managed to take away the first centre clearance straight away into their forward fifty only for it to be locked up. Sandilands then knocked it out from the ball up to Pavlich who loaded up from forty on a slight angle and split the middle. The next few minutes were spent with the ball continually locked up inside Fremantle's defensive fifty, before some flawless roving saw West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey bang one home to level the score. A breathtaking centre clearance from Nicholas Naitanui off of his own tap resulted in a lovely pack mark from Josh Kennedy directly in front 30 metres out, which he then converted to a six pointer with ease. Rhys Palmer then replied within 16 seconds with an electrifying run through the middle of the ground to leave the Eagles' momentarily shellshocked. 12 minutes of frustrating tense football followed, the Eagles peppering the goals but unable to convert, before a Mark LeCras set shot split the middle giving West Coast a 12 point buffer going ino the first change.

Disposals (WCE): Hams (8), Ebert (7), LeCras (7)
Goals (WCE): Shuey, Kennedy, LeCras

Disposals (FRE): Bradley (8), Ibbotson (7), McPhee (7)
Goals (FRE): Pavlich, Palmer

West Coast 3.7.25
Fremantle 2.1.13

Half Time

Fremantle dominated more than half of the second quarter but were unable to make the most of their opportunities, kicking seven straight behinds in the opening ten minutes, before set shot goal to Joel Houghton and then a roving Matthew Pavlich who put through his second major giving Fremantle the lead. Ryan Crowley then backed up his captain's effort with a wonderful snap from the boundary to give Fremantle an eleven point lead. The match was starting to develop shades of many a Western Derby before it as West Coast could feel the game slipping away. Just when things were starting to look down however, Chris Masten responded for the Eagles with a spectacular running goal from up the wing to re-inject some life into the side. His brilliance seemed to have a knock-on effect, as Mitch Brown converted two pack marks to goals consecutively and suddenly the pressure was on the Dockers. Bradd Dalziell and Scott Selwood then goaled from free kicks to give the Eagles a match-high 21 point lead and all the ascendancy.

Three Quarter Time

The second half started with a blow to the Eagles who lost forward Mitch Brown to injury. The word is that he has hurt his knee and that not only will he sit out the rest of the game, he will be out for a few weeks. Josh Kennedy will most likely have to play most the of the remainder of the game out of the goal square.

The third quarter started slowly with both sides looking slightly rusty after the break. Luke Shuey was damaging in the midfield however, and even bobbed forward to mark and goal to stretch the Eagles lead further. Mark LeCras then converted a set shot from the boundary about 35 out and then Gerrick Weedon chipped in with two crumbing snaps to put this Eagles 49 points in front, and it is looking like Derby 35 is heading back to the North of the river.

Fremantle went goalless in the term in response to West Coast's 4.6. Brad Ebert was sensational in that term with 14 disposals and engineered several attacks. It will take a mammoth effort for Fremantle to get home from here, but iot looks like West Coast will start off the season with four points.

Disposals (WCE): Ebert (24), Hams (20), McGinnity (18)

Disposals (FRE): Dodd (21), McPhee (17), Palmer (16)
Goals (FRE): Pavlich (2), Palmer, Crowley, Houghton

West Coast 12.16.88
Fremantle 5.9.39

Pure dominance for once in the Derby. Hams and Ebert are carving it up.
