Players to watch

Australia

Matthew Hayden - Hayden has had a phenomenal year in one day cricket, utilising his aggressive approach with better application than at any other point in his career. New Zealand will have to get him out early to stand a chance, as Haydos has the ability to single-handedly take the match away from them.

New Zealand

Shane Bond - Bond goes into this series with over 100 one day international wickets at an average of 20.06, proving that he has what it takes to ruffle the Australian batsmen with his lightning quick pace. The hosts will have to find a way to handle him or the trophy could go back to New Zealand.

Australia hammer New Zealand to take series lead

Australia have beaten New Zealand by 9 wickets at TBC to take a 1-0 lead in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with two matches remaining.

The tourists won the toss and elected to bat. Opening batsmen Stephen Fleming and Peter Fulton made a quick start to the innings in the opening overs before Fulton was out, leg before wicket to young fast bowler Shaun Tait for 14.

Lou Vincent came in and put on a partnership of 85 with Fleming. Vincent was eventually out for 52, caught by Ricky Ponting off the bowling of spinner Brad Hogg, and the captain was caught and bowled by James Hopes for a well made 60.

Stephen Fleming made a good start to the series with a fine half century

Australia's frontline bowlers struggled to take wickets, part timers Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds took the bulk of them.

Craig McMillan made 37 before he was trapped leg before wicket to Symonds and Jacob Oram notched up 58 before being out in the same way to Clarke.

The Kiwis looked set for a large total at 223-5, but they lost their last 5 wickets for just 34 runs to be all out for 257 with an over still to go.

Chasing, the hosts found the right blend of aggression and control to keep up with the required run rate without the risk of losing wickets.

New Zealand were extremely disappointing with the ball, star pacer Shane Bond finishing wicketless and going for 53 runs off his 10 overs.

Australia were only 18 runs away from victory when they lost their first, and only, wicket, Adam Gilchrist bowled by Daryl Tuffey for a sublime 113.

Matthew Hayden had another highlight for the year with his second Chappell-Hadlee Trophy century of his career. The Queenslander scored 125 not out, earning him the Man of the Match award and Australia the victory.

What a partnership between Gilly and Haydos! Amazing stuff by those two. Comfortable win from Australia. New Zealand should of troubled Australia more, they batted well but their bowling wasn't good enough.

11. Daryl Tuffey

Australia have made two changes to their team that won the opening game. Brad Hodge and Mitchell Johnson replace Phil Jaques and James Hopes respectively. With the extra bowler, Australia are once again favourites to win.

Players to watch

Australia

Shaun Tait - Tait did not get into his stride in the first match but he should have warmed into it by now. If he can get early wickets with his super speed the South Australian could be New Zealand's downfall.

New Zealand

Lou Vincent - Vincent has built up a reputation as the tourist's one day specialist, with a good hold over powerful strokes and match sense. Coming in at number three, he could turn the game on it's head if he gets going.

New Zealand pull off surprise win over Australia to level series

New Zealand have beaten Australia by 5 wickets at TBC to level the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy at 1-1 with one match remaining.

The tourists won the toss again and this time elected to bowl first. Opening batsmen Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist could not continue their good form from the first game as the wicket-keeper was out for a duck, bowled by James Franklin.

74543.jpg

James Franklin stepped up and put New Zealand in the driving seat with figures of 4/51

The partnership between Hayden and captain Ricky Ponting promised much but was broken before it began to worry the Kiwis, Ponting caught by Ross Taylor off the bowling of Franklin for 19.

Scott Styris caught Hayden off his own bowling for 34, and at 69-3 with Australia's most notable players out, New Zealand were on top.

Brad Hodge, playing in place of Phil Jaques, was disappointing as he made just 4 runs before being caught behind by Brendan McCullum off the bowling of Daryl Tuffey. Michael Clarke was out in exactly the same fashion for 19.

Franklin took the wickets of Andrew Symonds for 22, leg before wicket, and Brad Hogg for 12, bowled, to leave the bowlers with some batting to do at 212-7.

Mitchell Johnson was bowled by Tuffey for 2, and Nathan Bracken was left on 1 not out at the end of the innings with Shaun Tait not batting, rounding off a disappointing display from the hosts. They had totalled 224-8 off their 50 overs.

Australia had Michael Hussey to thank for taking them to that score. Mr Cricket made 96 not out and batted well with the tail end.

In reply, New Zealand got off to a poor start with opener Peter Fulton bowled by young pace bowler Shaun Tait for 0.

Captain Stephen Fleming and number three Lou Vincent then shared a partnership of 51 to steady the ship. It was broken when Fleming was caught by Ricky Ponting off the bowling of Nathan Bracken for 16.

Craig McMillan was bowled by Tait for just 2 but Vincent and Jacob Oram pushed on for a stand of 83.

83751.jpg

Jacob Oram guided the Kiwis home with 79 not out

Vincent was out, bowled by spinner Brad Hogg for 79 and wicket-keeper Brendan McCullum was trapped leg before wicket by Mitchell Johnson, in for James Hopes, for just 5.

However, Oram carried on to finish 79 not out and Ross Taylor provided valuable support to end on 35 not out and win the game and level the series with four overs to spare.

The Man of the Match award went to bowler James Franklin for his figures of 4/51. Other candidates were Lou Vincent and Jacob Oram, who both made 79 with the bat.
