Today, we were away at Gillingham. The last time Coventry played Gillingham, it was a 5-2 win for Coventry during Eric Black's short reign. Black was bizzarely sacked after this game and was replaced by Peter Reid, who only lasted 6 months. It was my hardest match in charge, but again, it was nowhere near the big stuff.

Injuries now. 3 players were still out, Wayne Andrews had strained knee ligaments, and Kevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds had strained ankle ligaments.

Now to the team news. 5 changes from the side that beat Waterford united 4-2. Robbie Simpson played his first minutes in my reign, the young talent started up front alongside a very in form Michael Mifsud. Julian Gray started on the left wing in place of loanee Lee Martin and Andy Marshall replaced Dimi Konstantopoulos in goal, and 2 changes in the centre of midfield, Michael Doyle and Stephen Hughes came in for Jay Tabb and Lee Hildreth.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
McNamee--de Zeeuw(c)---Dann------Fox
Cairo--------Tabb----------Doyle------Gray
--------------------Mifsud-------Simpson

Subs (12): Konstantopoulos(K), Best, Turner, McNamee, Ward, Hall, McKenzie, Davis, Osbourne, Hildreth, Martin, Tabb.

I arrived at Gillingham's ground, Priestfield, and it was a nice looking stadium, 11000 seats and I was surprised that the attendance was going to be as high as 8000, a great turnout for a friendly. Anyway, me and the lads went into the Away dressing rooms and had our usual pre match chat and out we went onto the pitch to warm up.

A slow start, the first opportunity falling to Simpson, he recieved the ball and touched it down and volleyed superbly well and his shot went flying into the top corner, but it was disallowed after the linesman flagged late. Great start for Simpson. On 14 mins, Cairo crossed to Hughes, Hughes knocked back to Doyle who struck a sweet left foot shot, which creeped just wide. On 26 mins, Simpson recieved the ball on the edge of the area, played it through to Mifsud who smashed at goal, and his shot thumped square against the crossbar and up the pitch. Great hit. The next chance fell to Gillingham striker David Graham, a ball was put through and found Graham 1 on 1, but Marshall stood firm and made the save. And that was the last noteable action of the half. A bit of a boring half, and we needed a goal, and then I was sure that if we got one we would get a few more. At half time I brought Martin on for gray, Osbourne on for Doyle, Hildreth on for Hughes, McKenzie on for Cairo and Turner on for Dann.
Another slow start, the first chance falling to Martin on 55 mins, he unleahed a fabulous strike from the edge of the box, but it went just over the bar. Unlucky. 30 seconds later, Fox cleared into the space over the Gillingham defence, and Mifsud was too quick for the Gillingham defenders, he ran into the box and squared to Martin who grabbed his first goal for the club. Well played. Great counter attack. On 63 mins, mifsud picked up the ball again inside his own half, ran and ran into the Gillingham area, pulled it back to Martin who was there again to smash into the back of the net. Great goal again, Mifsud and Martin working together. 2-0. Martin's second for Coventry and second of the game. On 69 mins, I made a few subs, Borrowdale on for Fox, Hall on for turner and Ward on for De Zeeuw. The next chance came on 85 mins, Borrowdale crossing to Mifsud on the left, Mifsud volleyed but his effort went agonisingly wide. 3 minutes of added time were called, and they came and went as quickly as they were signalled, and we got another win. 2-0, Martin making the difference when he came on.

25/7/07

Today, we were away at Northern irish side Linfield. We had won all of our pre season fixtures so far, so I hoped we could win our last game before the new Champioship season started. And it was a very hard place to start too, an away trip to promotion favourites Watford.

Injuries now. 3 players were still out, Wayne Andrews had strained knee ligaments, and Kevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds had strained ankle ligaments.

Now to the team news. Just 1 change from the side that beat Gillingham 2-0. Lee Martin returns after impressing last time out.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
McNamee--de Zeeuw(c)---Dann------Fox
Cairo--------Tabb----------Doyle------Martin
--------------------Mifsud-------Simpson

Subs (12): Konstantopoulos(K), Best, Turner, McNamee, Ward, Hall, McKenzie, Davis, Osbourne, Hildreth, Gray, Tabb.

I arrived at Linfield eagerr to get the game started, and I was interested to see how my team would fare against Irish opposition. Me and the lads got into the dressing rooms, had our chat about tactics, and who to watch out for and so on, and soon we were ready to go.

A good start, on four minutes, a Michael Doyle shot won a corner, Fox whipped a magnifiscent ball in with his left peg, and lots of players jumped up and Linfield midfielder John Leacock handled it and the referee pointed to the spot. Ellery Cairo stepped up and converted with ease. 1-0. The next chance came on 12 mins, Stephen Hughes was fouled on the edge, and Dan Fox stepped up and scored another tasty free kick, thats his third free kick scored in pre season, brilliant from the left back who's cross also won the penalty. On 19 mins, the Irish side got themselves back in the game, Baird chipped a ball into Paul Wright who turned, ran 3 yards and fired home, great goal. 2-1. And n 27 mins, they got a surprise equaliser, a hoofed ball fell to Salt, who cheekily chipped Andy Marshall who could do nothing about the goal. 2-2. The next chance came on 39 mins, Simpson holding the ball of and laying it to Mifsud who broke free and shot from just inside the area, but his shot was tipped over. The referee blew for half time, and I was very disappointed that we had blown a 2 goal lead, but to be fair Linfield deserved it, they reall came back strongly after Daniel Fox's superb free kick. I made a few changes at half time. Leon Best on for Robbie Simpson, Elliott ward on for Scott Dann, Marcus Hall on for David McNamee and Jay Tabb on for Stephen Hughes. And out we went for the second half.
The first chance came on 55 minutes, mifsud pouncing on a poor clearance, knocking the ball past a defender and running on to it, his hot was straight at the keeper though and the rebound fell to him but he scuffed his shot and it was a goal kick. On 62 mins, i made a couple more changes, Davis on for Cairo and Osbourne on for Doyle. A minute later, Lee Martin did a superb bit of skill, totally skinning 2 Linfield defenders, knocking the ball to mifsud who finished superbly, the keeper had no chance. 3-2, Mifsud. On 70 mins, mifsud put the ball into the box from the left, Best knocked down to Martin who unleashed a corker of a shot, which nearly smashed the crossbar. unlucky. On 77 mins, Jay Tabb played a superb weighted pass to Davis on the right, he played another great through ball to leon best, but Best pulled his shot over the ball. The next chance came on 90 minutes, lee Martin putting Mifsud through on the left, but Mifsud's shot hit the side netting. And that was the last action of the match. A great game to watch and I was happy that we had completed a 100% pre season record, although i was fully aware that we hadn't faced proper opposition yet.

COVENTRY EYE 4

Coventry City have been very active in this transfer window so far, already signing Man Utd's young winger Lee Martin on loan, and Craig Tough has revealed 4 other names he is pondering, and he has put in bids for those 4 too. Man Utd's Phillip Bardley has been transfer listed by the Red Devils, and Craig Tough is battling it out with Watford to sign the young defender. Watford have put a ?700K bid in, and Craig Tough has since put a ?1mil bid in. Also, Bochum's Joel Epalle is a distinct taget, and Craig Tough has had a ?1.5mil bid accepted, however Epalle has aid himslef that it won't be a very good career move for him, so thats transfer is in doubt. The next target was Reading striker Leroy lita, Lita has been told he can leave by manager Steve Coppell, and Tough has put in a ?5mil bid in for Lita. And finally, out of favour Middlesbrough player Gaizka Mendieta, Tough putting a ?675K bid in fr the veteran.

EPALLE & LITA SNUB COVENTRY

Coventry's bid to bring striker Joel Epalle to the club has fallen through. Coventry agreed a ?1.5mil bid for the striker, but Epalle said that it wouldn't be a wise career move for him. reading reject ?5mil bid for Leroy Lita, and Tough said he wouldn't go back in for the striker, as more than ?5mil would be wasted money.

HUGHES OUT FOR A MONTH

Coventry midfielder Stephen hughes will be out for a month after he suffered a chest injury lifting weights in training. This will be a blow for him as he will miss the opening of the Championship season against Watford.

COVENTRY GET CHELTENHAM

Coventry have drawn Cheltenham at home in the first round of the carling Cup. A good tie for Coventry as they should definately get through. The game will be played at the Ricoh Arena on the 15th August.

COVENTRY AGREE BARDSLEY FEE

Manchester United have accepted Coventry's ?1mil bid for defender Phillip Bardsley. Bardsley, 22, has been told he can leave after Alex Ferguson admitted that he had no future at the club. Bardsley will join Coventry if he can agree personal terms.

MENDIETA SET TO JOIN COVENTRY

Coventry's ?675K offer for midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has been accepted by Midllesbrough. manager Gareth Southgate has said that Gaizka wanted to leave to get some first team football before he retires. Mendieta will join Coventry if he can agree personal terms.

wow loads there nice wins and good luck with bardsley and mendieta

Pretty comfortable pre-season, but with those tough games up to in the Championship you could be looking at a tough month. Watford, Ipswich and West Brom are all going to be very tough ties. Epalle and lita coming are bad news, hopefully you can get a few more signings before the season starts...

great win against Gillingham, average win against Linfield though. I expect better! :p You should do well in the season though, you have enough strength in depth TO do well. Tough first month, few good signings coming in though so could work out for you.

Good luck Craig! :)

Ta, thanks. Like Trev said, a very tough first month, I'd do well to come out with 2 wins this month. Watford vs Coventry might be up later. Probably tomorrow :)

MENDIETA REJECTS COVENTRY

Gaizka Mendieta look certian to move to Coventry this week, but with
Premiership sides showing interes, Mendieta said he wasn't prepared to
drop down a division in order to get first team football. Manager Craig
Tough is bitterly disapponted at the rejection.

DAVIS OUT FOR THREE WEEKS

Coventry's young winger Liam Davis wil miss the start of the season after
picking up a groin injury attempting sprints in training. Its a blow to Davis
as it was going to be his first full proffesional season.

BARDSLEY SIGNS

Coventry have won the race to sign in demand Manchester United
defender Phillip Bardsley. Coventry fought off stern opposition from
Watford and Sheffield United in a race to sign the youngster. Coventry
manager Craig Tough was delighted at the aquisition, and at a bargain
price too, just ?1mil for the ?2.1mil rated right back. Bardsley will wear
the number 10 shirt, and goes straight into the squad to face Watford.

11/8/07

So here it was, the opening fixture of the Coca Cola Championship season, and we were facing a tough test to say the least. Away at Watford is hardly the ideal place to get your season up and running, but we were hopeful that we could get something from the game.

Injuries now. 4 players missed out. Wayne Andrews was back from strained knee ligaments, howeverKevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds still had strained ankle ligaments, Liam Davis was out with a groin strain and Stephen hughes had a chest injury. Also, young defender Ben Turner was suspended from a red card carrying over from last season.

Now to the team news. So, my first 16 man lineup. New signing Phillip Bardsley started at right back, captain De Zeeuw and Elliott Ward started at centre back, and Daniel Fox at left back. Ellery Cairo, Jay Tabb, Michael Doyle and Lee Martin made up the midfield and Best partenered Mifsud up front.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
Bardsley--de Zeeuw(c)---Ward------Fox
Cairo--------Tabb----------Doyle------Martin
--------------------Mifsud-------Best

Subs (5): Gray, Simpson, Osbourne, McKenzie, Dann.

Right, me and the lads arrived at Vicarage Road looking forward to the game & season ahead and we could n't wait to get started. We walked through the doors and up to
the away dressing rooms. We had a serious chat about what was expected and out we went onto the pitch ready for action.

A disastrous start, not only for Coventry, but for dubut boy Phil Bardsley. A long Mart poom kick went just over him and he accidentally handled the ball inside the area.
Disaster, so unlucky. Penalty to Watford. Tommy Smith stepped up and made it 1-0 to Watford. On 4 minutes, we should've equalised, Bardley into Tabb, who passed to
Best who slotted Mifsud through, but Mifsud didn't score. Dan. 1-0 still. On 12 mins, it was 2-0, some poor marking saw Nathan Ellington through and he converted. It was
going to be a long day. On 18 mins, we had a chance, Cairo crossing to mifsud who volleyed from 12 yards, but it went just a bit too high. unlucky. On 36 mins we got one
back, great vision from Jay Tabb saw Lee Martin through on goal and he made no mistake, league debut goal for Martin. And that was the last noteable action of the half. I
was happy with that half, as I saw how well the players responded after the second goal went in, and I was happy that the game was still there for the taking. At half time I
made a change. Osbourne on for Doyle.
We started the second half strongly, Mifsud and Best both getting half chances, but their shots were off target each time. On 68 mins, I made my changes, Simpson on for
Best and McKenzie on for Cairo. On 77 mins, we had a glorious opportunity, Lee Martin setting Mifsud free, he passed to Simpson who aboslutely messed his shot up and
sent the ball flying over. What a cock up. 4 minutes of injury time were called, and we nearly equalised, Jay Tabb let rip from 20 yards, but it was superbly saved by Mart Poom. Corner kick. The corner was awful, it cleared the first man, but it cleared everyone else too. Shocker. A minute later, Mart Poom made an amazing double save, a
Dan Fox shot nearly flew straight in the top corner, it thudded off the underside of the bar, ame out to Osbounre who's shot looked goal bound only for Poom to pull another
out the bag. Damn. On 94 mins, Watford got another ****ing goal. The stupid c*nts went and got a corner, some **** marking and Hoskins headed in. Pr*ck. FFS!!!!! 3-1.
We didn't deserve this. All over and we had lost, we didn't deserve to, and I will mention that the ref was absolutle ycrap. Clattenburg gave my team about 500 yellow cards,
and all of them were needless. What a load of b*llocks.

VILLA ACCEPT BERGER OFFER

Aston Villa have accepted Coventry's ?530K offer for midfielder Patrik
Berger, Berger will join the Sky Blues if he can agree personal terms.
Manager Martin O'Neill said that it would be a good move for him and
wishes Patrik good luck in the future.

Yeh, but he had a poor debut to say the least :( May well drop him actually, bring in McNamee, but maybe not... Next update coming soon.

15/8/07

Right then, after a mildly disappointing start at Watford, it was on to the Carling Cup for us, in my first home game in charge. It was against Cheltenham at the Ricoh, and a

win was expected.

Injuries now. 4 players were still out. Wayne Andrews was back from strained knee ligaments, howeverKevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds still had strained ankle ligaments, Liam Davis was out with a groin strain and Stephen hughes had a chest injury. Also, young defender Ben Turner was still suspended from a red card carrying over from last season.

Now to the team news. It was a very special game for 2 young players. For today's game, I decided to bring in 2 of my U18 squad to taste some first team action. Young 17 year oldIrish midfielder Kieran Fitzharris, and fellow U18 English striker Reis Ashraf, and I put them straight in to see how they would fare against the big boys. It was a risk I was willing to take. And they were the only 2 changes from the side that faced Watford, with Julian Gray and Leon McKenzie rested.

Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
Bardsley--de Zeeuw(c)---Ward------Fox
Cairo--------Tabb----------Fitzharris----Martin
--------------------Mifsud-------Ashraf

Subs (5): Best, Simpson, Osbourne, Doyle, Dann.

So I arrived at the Ricoh for the first time on a matchday, and it was a really good feeling. The scent of freshly photocopied paper and coffee roamed free and I was in the

mood. I really hoped that young players Ashraf and Fitzharris could make a name for themselves today by contributing, and I met up with the lads in the drssing rooms.

Gave them the usual chat, except I told the young players that there was no pressure on them and that they should play their normal game today, and out we went.

A slow start, the first chance coming on 6 minutes, Daniel Fox whipped in a free kick from the left, Cairo met it but his header sent the ball into the side netting. On 9 mins, Ashraf was nearly living the dream, Lee Martin beat 2 Chetenham players, whipped in a cross and Reis Ashraf made a superb header, but it was fantastically kept out by Cheltenham keeper Shane Higgs. On 11 mins, we got the breakthrough, Lee Martin with some more great work on the left, put a cross in, the keeer missed it and Mifsud volleyed home. 1-0. On 16 mins, Martin made it 2-0, another great bit of work down the left, cut inside and finished into the bottom corner, great goal. Martin is showing just why I signed him. On 3 minutes, Martin was involved in yet another attack, his cross onto Mifsud's head, but it went inches wide. On 23 mins it was 3-0, and guess who set up the goal? Thats right, a Lee Martin corner was right on the money, and Elliott Ward was there to head home. 3-0. On 30 mins, Cheltenham got one back, a free kick on the edge was setn into the top corner by Cheltenham midfielder Dave Bird, great set piece. The next chance came on 38 mins, Ashraf holding the ball up superbly, laying off to Tabb who's shot from 20 yards was saved well. Half time, and Martin had been sensational, and to be fair, Ashraf had been superb too, and Fitzharris was running the midfield as if he was 37! Great first half. No changes at HT, straight in.
A great start, Jay Tabb put the ball into the area, and Fitzharris the youngster was there to tap home! What a finish! Oh yes, and a youngster scoring too, young talent shinign through! On 60 mins, Tabb passed to Lee mMartin, who beat a defender and shot superbly, and his shot came off the top of the bar. Unlucky. And that was the last noteable action in a boring end to the second half, and I was ecstatic with the team. Especially Ashraf and Fitzharris who came into the team today. So pleased, I didn't make any subs!

COVENTRY SET TO SIGN OKORONKWO

Coventry City have had a ?2mil bid accepted for 20 year old Nigerian striker Solomon Okoronkwo. Okoronkwo currently plays for German outfit Hertha Berlin, and Coventry have been scouting him for a while now, and manager Craig Tough believes a move is on the cards. Also, after the news of the acception, he has swiftly withdrawn interest in Aston Villa midfielder Patrik Berger

COVENTRY DRAW VILLA

After getting past Cheltenham in the first round of the Carling Cup, Coventry have been rewarded with a trip to arch rivals Aston Villa, Coventry haven't played their rivals Villa since they went down in 2001, and it is set to be a very hot headed encounter. The game will be played at Villa Park on 29th August.

Nice to see the youth getting nice match experience and Okoronkwo could be a good signing. Villa in the cup? Classic. :D

18/8/07

Today, it was back to the Championship in my first home league game in charge. I was looking forward to it as we were expecting a decent turnout of support today, that would hopefully guide us to victory over a side that were tipped to be in a relegation fight this season, and had come off the back of a 3-0 victory over Peterbrough in the Carling Cup, but they had also lost their opening Championship game 3-1 at the hands of promotion contenders West Brom.

Injuries now. The same 4 players were still out. Kevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds still had strained ankle ligaments, Liam Davis was out with a groin strain and Stephen hughes had a chest injury. Also Ben Turner was still suspended from a red card carrying over from last season.

Now to the team news. After their show against Cheltenham, I pondered wether to keep young players Keiran Fitzharris and Reis Ashraf in the side, and eventually I rewarded them by naming them both in the 16. Fitzharris keeping his place in a 5 man midfild, and Reis Ashraf dropped to the bench, Michael Doyle came into the starting lineup after being rested, and Julian Gray dropped out the side and another young Coventry academy player Lee Hildreth made the bench. The youth academy was really benefitting the side, and its great that we have so much young talent in the squad, with other promoted youths Ben Turner and Liam Davis out at the moment but were definately worthy of a first team place. And they were the only changes from the 4-1 win against Cheltenham.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
-------Bardsley--de Zeeuw(c)---Ward------Fox
Cairo--------Tabb------Doyle----Fitzharris----Martin
---------------------------Mifsud

Subs (5): Best, Hildreth, Osbourne, Ashraf, Dann.

A boring start, the first chance coming to Dugid who blazed high and wide from 10 yards. On 14 minutes, we got the breakthrough, Cairo crossing from the right, Mifsud controlled and shot into the back of the net. 1-0. On 17 mins, it was 2. Keiran Fitzharris with an outstanding crossfield bal to Cairo, who crossed and Doyle headed home. 2-0. On 30 mins, Colchester had a chnce, Duguid heading just over from a free kick delivery. On 39 mins, we scored again, Lee Martin winning the ball on the left, passing to Doyle, who put Mifsud through who grabbed his second. 3-0. Well played. Half time, and I was very happy. We had made every chance count and we were in a very good position going into the second half. I made one sub at half time. Ashraf on for Doyle.
We started the second half very well, Mifsud setting up Ashraf who still had loads of work to do, turned out of a challenge and struck a fantastic shot, which was just kept out by Colchester keeper Dean Gerken. On 54 mins, Martin crossed into Caoro who's header was saved, but he scored the follow up, great gaol again. 4-0. Cruising. On 58 minutes, Colchester's day got worse, Luke Guttridge sent off for an elbow on Phil Bardsley. On 70 mins, Colchester nearly pulled one back, Teddy Sheringham hitting the post from 4 yards. Then I made some subs, Dann on fro Ward and Best on for Mifsud. Nothing happened in the last 20 mins, and we sealed a 4-0 win. Great victory.

ASHRAF OUT FOR 3 WEEKS

Young Coventry up and coming star striker Reis Ashraf, has suffered a huge blow just as he has broken in to Coventry's first squad. Asraf went over in the 4-0 demolition of Colchester and smashed his elbow. It can be repaired, but he may be out for 3 weeks. Tough said he felt sorry for Ashraf, as he was really showing promise on the pitch, but he added that Ashraf would definately get back if he trained hard.

CRYSTAL PALACE + SHEFF UTD BID FOR MCNAMEE

Covenrty City have accepted 2 £200K bids for Coventry right back David McNamee. McNamee was upset by the arrival of Phil Barsley, and knew that it would be very hard to get first team football from now on. McNamee will join either Palace or Sheffield United if he can agree personal terms.

BOLTON + FULHAM DECLARE THORNTON INTEREST

Premier League sides Bolton and Fulham have made enquiries into talented Coventry midfielder Kevin Thornton. Thornton, 21 is part of the Irish U21 side, and is another product of Coventry's academy. Manager Craig tough said he has no need to let players like Thornton go, but it depends on what Thornton wants to do.

HUGE INTEREST FOR MCNAMEE

Coventry defender David Mcnamee has attracted huge interest from a host of clubs. Coventry have already accepted bids fromSheffield United and Crystal Palace, and now Watford, with Doncaster, Leeds, Dunfermeline and Gretna all interested too.

OKORONKWO DEAL MAY NOT GO THROUGH

Coventry's bid to sign Solomon Okoronkwo from Hertha Berlin may be scuppered due to needing a work permit. Okoronkwo and hertha have agreed a fee of £2mil and Okoronkwo himself has signed the contract, but in order to join he needs to have his work permit accepted. The decision will be made on 28 August 2007.

25/8/07

Today, it was the final league game of the month. And a very hard fixture indeed. Away at promotion contenders Ipswich. had had a good start to the season, brushing Barnsley aside, and then getting a good draw against West Brom, so it was certainly going to be a tough match, but I felt we could do it.

Injuries now. 5 players were out. Kevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds still had strained ankle ligaments, Liam Davis was out with a groin strain and Stephen hughes had a chest injury and Reis Ashraf was out with a damaged elbow. Ben Turner was back from a ban, but didn't make the cut.

Now to the team news. The only changes from the side that beat Colchster was that Doyle dropped to the bench and was replaced by Leon Best whp partnered Mifsud up top. That meant that young midfielder Keiran Fitzharris made his 3rd start in a row, and as you could probably guess, his confidence was sky high, and leon McKenzie and Julian Gray started on the bench in place of Lee Hildreth and injured Reis Ashraf.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
-------Bardsley--de Zeeuw(c)---Ward------Fox
--------Cairo----Tabb--------Fitzharris----Martin
------------------Mifsud--------Best

Subs (5): Best, Hildreth, Osbourne, Doyle, Dann.

FORM GUIDE
Ipswich: W D
Coventry: L W

I arrived at Ipswich's ground, Portman Road, no hesitancy, straight into the dressing room to get set for action. I was very tense as I knew that it was going to be a bumpy ride. Hopefully we could overcome this and get another 3 points chalked up. The lads arrived, I gave them the pre match chat, and out we went for the start of the game.

A good start, with 1 minute gone, Fitzharris and Tabb exchanged 1-2s, Tabb passed in to Best, who hit a powerful shot, but it was saved by the keeper. The next chance came on 20 mins for Ipswich, David Norris put dangerman Pablo Counago through on goal, his shot was saved but the rebound came to him, but it came quickly and he miskicked. On 22 mins, we took the lead, Counago with an awful mistake, passing back to Leon Best who turned and shot home from 6 yards. 1-0. On 30 mins, Ipswich nearly levelled, Alan Lee breaking through the middle, but he sent his shot high over the crossbar. On 33 mins, Martin did some great work on the left, and picked out Mifsud on his own, the shot bounced up on him, but he struck well, but the keeper got a strong hand to it. 1-0 still. On 45 mins, Ipswich nearly gifted us another goal, Alan Lee this time putting a 20 yard ball back to the keeper, Leon Best intercepted, but was forced wide, he crossed to Mifsud who's header was tipped over for a corner by Stephen Bywater. And that was the last chance of the half. I was very pleased with what I had seen in that first half, we had defended very well, and when we were presented a chance we took it. At half time, I made 1 change, Leon McKenzie on for Ellery Cairo.
The first chance of the half came on 53 mins, for Ipswich, Sylvan Legwinski chipped into Counago who teed Norris who's shot went just wide. On 55 mins, Ipswich got the equaliser, Fox letting Norris past who crossed to Alan Lee who velleyed home from 3 yards. 1-1. On 60 mins, we retook the lead superbly, Lee Martin found Mifsud in space who had plenty of time to slot home, however, it did look very offside, but I certainly wasn't complaining. On 72 mins, it was 2-2, Alan Lee making light work of getting past De Zeeuw and had a year to put home. 2-2. I made my last changes, Doyle on for Fitzharris and Dann on for De Zeeuw. Straight from the re-start, Mifsdu ran through 2 challenges, gave to Bardsley on the right, he crossed inch perfectly to tabb, who's 15 yard shot was brilliantly tipped wide for a corner. On 78 mins, we threatened goal
again, Daniel ox nearly scored another free kick, by Bywater saved again. 4 minutes of injury time were called, and on the last of them Mifsud was clean through on goal, just about to make it 3-2, when the ref blew the final whistle. What a stupid f*cking w*nker.

SAO PAULO ACCEPT THIAGO OFFER

Coventry City have had a £5.25mil offer accepted for Sao Paulo's Brazilian wonderkid Thiago. Thiago, 19, has made a number of apprances for Sao Paulo scoring 2 goals in 8 matches, and looks like a huge talent. He will join Coventry if he can agree personal terms.

MCNAMEE SEALS PALACE MOVE

Coventry defender David McNamee has signed for Championship side Crystal Palace, McNamee rejected contract offers from Sheffield United and Watford and dismissed interest from Doncaster, Leeds, Dunfermeline and Gretna. The value of the move was £200K

DE ZEEUW GIVES COVENTRY SCARE

Coventry City's captain Arjan De Zeeuw has given Coventry a scare leading up to their vital Carling Cup game with arch rivals Aston Villa. De Zeeuw suffered a bruised thigh in training, and may have been out of the Villa game, but has since had an injection to get him through the game. However, after the game he could be out for 3 weeks.

THIAGO NEEDS WORK PERMIT TOO

Coventry's bid to bring wonderkid Thiago to the Ricoh Arena may end too, as Thiago needs a work permit, just like Okoronkwo, manager Craig Tough says he i hopeful at getting both players, and belives that they could be a serious threat to any team.

OKORONKWO + THIAGO PERMITS REJECTED

Coventry were left in disbelief as the FA rejected new signings Solomon Okoronkwo's and Thiago's work permits to come and play in England. Coventry were bitterly disappointed and have since appealed against both of the decisions, and hope that the FA will oerturn their decisions.

ZARAGOZA AND WEST HAM IN FOR COVENTRY PAIR

Coventry duo Michael Mifsud and Kevin Thornton have recieved enquiries. West Ham have enquired into the possible signing of Coventry midfielder Kevin Thornton, with Bolton and Fulham interested too, and Spanish outfit Real Zaragoza are in for Coventry's star striker Michael Mifsud. Both have publically said that they won't be moving.

So! On to Aston Villa in the Carling Cup, a huge test, but I think we can win!

29/8/07

In the last game of the month, and nearly the end of the transfer window, attention turned to the second round of the Carling Cup where we made a short trip to face Premier League side Aston Villa. Aston Villa had had a poor start to the season, losing to Portsmouth and Manchester United and drawing against Bolton, but obviously any Premier League side was going to have more skilled players than us, with the likes of Gabby Agbonlahor,, John Carew and Nigel Reo Coker in the team, but we knew we could get a result.

Injuries now. 6 players were out. Kevin Thornton and Donovan Simmonds still had strained ankle ligaments, Liam Davis was out with a groin strain and Stephen hughes had a chest injury and Reis Ashraf was out with a damaged elbow. And also, De Zeeuw decided against the injection in the end, and missed out.

Now to the team news. Unchanged from the side that drew to Ipswich, except dropped to the bench. Robbie Simpson replaced Best up front, with injured De Zeeuw dropping out of the side. Young player Keiran Fitzharris kept his place in the 16 again after gaving 4 very good games in his first stint as a senior player. Dann started at centre half. And Michael Doyle started and Fitzharris dropped to the bench.
Here was the starting XI:

--------------------------Marshall
-------Bardsley--Dann---Ward------Fox
--------Cairo----Doyle(c)------Fitzharris----Martin
------------------Mifsud--------Simpson

Subs (5): McKenzie, Gray, Osbourne, Doyle, Tabb.

FORM GUIDE (League and Cup)
Villa: L L D
Coventry: W W D

I arrived at Villa Park under no pressure whatsoever for once. I knew that if we didn't win, no one would really bat an eyelid, except the fact that the fans hate Aston Villa as they are our main rivals, but really, we weren't expected to do a lot. So we got together, had a chat about what we were going to do to break Villa down, and I had a few ideas along the way. Anyway, off we went.

A disastrous start. John Carew shooting home from 10 yards after 1 minute. On 9 mins, we nearly equalised, Daniel Fox's corner corssed to Lee Martin on the edge, he controlled, ran 2 yards and shot, but it was well saved by England keeper Scott Carson. On 13 mins, we had another chance, Bardsley floating in a free kick, Doyle brought it down, and his shot was just wide. On 19 mins, we had yet another chance, Daniel Fox lined up a free kick from 25 yards, hit it across the keeper, and it went inches wide. Unlucky. On 26 mins, Robbie Simpson limped off injured, and I replaced him with Leon Best. On 30 mins, Mifsud had a chance, his shot well over from 20 yards. Come on! On 35 mins, we got what we deserved, Doyle heading to Best, and Best put Doyle clean through, and he finished like a striker. 1-1. Just before half time, Villa nearly got the lead back, Salifou crossing from a free kick, it was met well by Carew, but Marshall made an unbelievable save, and Cairo cleared for a Villa throw. Half time, and I was a very happy man. 1-1 at half time with a Europe chasing Premier League side. I just hoped we wouldn't cae in in the second half. At half time I made 1 change, Tabb off for Osbourne, Isaac Osbourne's 16 year ols brother Isaiah plays for Villa.
It was nearly as bad a start as the first, 3 minutes in and Ashley Young thought he'd put Villa ahead but his goal was ruled out for offside. Phew! On 49 mins, we had a good chance, Mifsud passing out to martin on the left, his cross was superbly volleyed by Leon best, but the ball skimmed the top of the crossbar. Great technique. Good move. And unbelievably, on 50 mins, we took the lead! Martin slid Fox in on the left, he had ages to make a cross, Best controlled superbly and had time to slide the ball underneath Scott Carson. 2-1!! On 67 mins, Villa had another great chance, Young breaking free through the defence, he looked certain to score, but Marshall pulled another great save out of his box, then the rebound fell to Young, who had an open goal to aim at, was just about to make it 2-2, when in came Phil Bardsley with the tackle of the year. Supeb last ditch defending. On 70 mins, Aston Villa, much tomy dismay, brought on main man Gabby Agbonlahor, he played on the lift and Barry switched to the right and seconds later, his ball went to Barry, who crossed to Carew, but he sent his header at Marshall, and Marshall tipped over superbly again. On 70 mins, Villa had a shocker. Nelsen's throw in deep inside the Villa half, went straight over target Laursen, Best was too quick for Laursen, rounded the keeper, and the sub got his second goal of the game. 3-1!!! I went mad on the touchline, and so did the fans. On 83 mins, Mifsud nearly made it four, his shot from 30 yards going just wide. 3 minutes of added time was signalled, 4 had past by the time the ref blew his whistle, but it didn't matter! A historic derby win, the biggest derby for Coventry was Villa, and I had won it, and at Villa's home ground too. What a win, what a performance, and I was very proud of the defnece, who didn't have De Zeeuw to help them and young Scott Dann was outstanding. Well played everyone.
