Having lost their star opening batsman off the first ball of their innings to the ageless Herbert Dorning, South Africa were off to a poor start in their pursuit of 220. Jim Christy, making his Olympic debut scored a half-century whilst adding 88 runs for the 2nd wicket alongside skipper Jock Cameron to steer them on the right course. Despite a few middle-order hiccups afterwards, they were well on their way to winning the match needing just 6 runs off the final over to do so, with Quintin McMillan and Buster Nupen batting quite well.
What followed was among the most unbelievable turnarounds in Olympic history as Clem Gibson, a bowler once good enough to trouble Warwick Armstrong's all-conquering Australian XI in 1921 and almost make it to the English Test side but for his own refusal to tour, dismissed Buster Nupen, Neville Quinn and Sandy Bell in succession to claim a hat-trick - just the third ever recorded in the Olympics following Tom Jameson in 1924 and Dainty Ironmonger earlier in this tournament, and the first ever against a Test-playing nation. Gibson claimed 5 for 43 off 8.5 overs, his second five-wicket haul, thereby equalling Bill Lockwood and Bart King as one of only three bowlers to claim more than one five-wicket haul in a career in the Olympics. Argentina won by only 3 runs, toppling their second Test nation on the trot.

On a good batting wicket like this, not even the new and improved fast leg theory deployed by Great Britain's skipper Douglas Jardine could stop the Indians from scoring at almost 5 runs an over and scoring in excess of 220. The Nawab of Pataudi followed his century against Germany with a classy half-century against a British bowling attack featuring some of the best bowlers in world cricket in Harold Larwood, Bill Bowes and Hedley Verity. Verity, off whom it seems quite impossible to score off was the only bowler to exact some control with figures of 2 for 27 from 9 overs, while Bill Bowes though expensive at times proved effective with 4 wickets to his name. After 2 matches, Jardine's premier weapon Larwood, arguably the fastest bowler in the world at this point of his career, has yet to deliver one of those lineup wrecking spells he is so famous for having picked just 1 wicket against Ireland the match before and having now gone wicketless here.

Great Britain's powerful batting lineup made good use of the batting-friendly conditions found in this match and also the absence of an extra bowling option in India's ranks when they lost Ladha Ramji in just the 12th over of the innings to an injury. Ramji, having tripped over his ankle struggled to finish the over instead resorting to bowling lobs whilst standing at the batsmen, and had to be supported off the field by his team-mates. There were no less than three half-centurions in Great Britain's lineup in the Indian-born KS Duleepsinhji, the skipper Douglas Jardine and Wally Hammond, considered to be one of the greatest batsmen in the world at present other than Bradman and Headley. Hammond finished the match with a six off Rustomji Jamshedji to bring up a comprehensive 7-wickey victory for the British with more than 8 overs to spare.

In a hurry to bring up his maiden Olympic hundred, Clifford Roach (sitting to the left) struck two sixes off the fourth and fifth balls of the final over of the West Indian innings, and then took a single off the final delivery to reach the mark. He finished with exactly 100 off 148 balls, one of only a handful of instances of an opener carrying his bat through a completed innings at the Olympics. America's cricketing woes continued as their bowlers struggled badly for penetration following Padwick Green's impressive dismissal of Freddie Martin in the first over of the match, and bowled a shocking 25 no-balls in the innings. It was easy runs for the likes of George Headley and Clarence Passailaigue, who also cashed in with half-centuries of their own as the West Indies posted 260 for the loss of just 3 wickets.

With some of the West Indian fast bowlers such as Learie Constantine and Manny Martindale also employing the controversial leg theory tactics of Douglas Jardine, runs proved nearly impossible to come by for the United States. In the circumstances it was a very good effort by the 39-year old Robert Anderson, a player once good enough to destroy Bart King in a Halifax Cup match in his farewell season, to score 38 off just 34 balls against the powerful West Indian bowling attack upon his return to top flight cricket after a 4-year hiatus since the 1928 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, he was the only batsman in the American lineup to make it past 30 as they were bowled out for 137.
