The Olympics Games is set to be hosted outside the continent of Europe for the first time. America's success in cricket in the previous two Olympic Games meant the IOC officials had no hesitation in retaining it for the 1904 Olympics set to be hosted in St Louis, Missouri.

Argentina, Canada, France and New Zealand who tool part in 1900 have opted out, but four new teams - Ireland (

Summary​

Having already established it's reputation as an Olympic sport in the first two editions of the modern Olympics, cricket was retained as a sporting event when the Olympics were held outside Europe for the first time. There were initially concerns about the sub-standard cricketing facilities at St Louis, Missouri, but the United States' impressive record as a cricket nation in the Olympics convinced the authorities to take a punt.

And they were not left disappointed. Australia, now by far the most appealing team in the 1-day single-innings format dominated every other team in the 8-team tournament to win Gold for the second successive time. Great Britain on the other hand finished as runners-up to win Silver for the third successive Olympic cricket event. This time though, they were well and truly second best to the dominant Australians. But much to the satisfaction of cricket enthusiasts and administrators, the United States finished as Bronze medalists in their own backyard.

The inability of Argentina, Canada, France and New Zealand, participants in the 1900 event, to send over a minimum of eleven athletes for cricket resulted in their exclusion in favor of Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa and West Indies.

Of the four debutants, the West Indies were the most impressive by finishing at 4th place, just one short of a medal. They finished second in their group only to Great Britain, whom they sensationally beat in their first match of the tournament. The team had an abundance of talent, but at the same time played some reckless cricket as shown by a surpirsing defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, a very close call against Ireland and losing the Bronze playoff to the Americans.

Ireland and the Netherlands did themselves no disgrace in their first ever attempt at cricket in the Olympics. Placed in the same group as each other, the Irish drew first blood with a victory against the Dutch but couldn't match up to the calibre of Great Britain and West Indies. Netherlands meanwhile did beat the West Indies due to the brilliance of Carst Posthuma, but slipped up against the British as expected.

South Africa, being one of only three nations with 'Test status' in cricket had a disappointing maiden Olympic campaign, finishing 5th out of eight teams. Given that they have cricketing privileges teams such as the United States and West Indies can only dream of, one would have expected them to do better than finish below them on the final table.

Nothing more could be said of the Mixed Team who finished winless yet again and were humiliated in all of their matches. Their future in the Olympics remains bleak with letters coming in to have them removed immediately from future Olympic seasons after this fiasco.


Best players​

Reggie Duff finished with a total of 279 runs at 55.80, the highest for the tournament and also the highest for any Olympic cricket tournament till date. His bright starts set the platform for Australia's domination in a campaign where they did not lose a single match.

Despite finishing second on runs to Duff and only just falling short of Johnny Tyldesley's tally of 273 runs in 1900, Clem Hill was undoubtedly the most entertaining batsman in the entire tournament. He scored his runs quite forcefully and his 270 runs came at a gargantuan average of 90. His 10 sixes are also a record that is likely to stay intact for quite some time.

With 13 wickets to his name at a miserly average of 11.69, this was clearly Bart King's best season with the ball. He also improved his batting well enough to open the innings for the United States with reasonable success. All this made him best all-rounder for the season once again.

Joseph "Float" Woods, the Barbadian tearaway proved to be a revelation with 14 wickets at a miserly average of 11.07. He was tied on wickets with none other than Sydney Barnes as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, but with a slightly superior average.
