Hi all, been away for ages - but here's some great news!

It's a Kickstarter project right now and here's the pledge link:

Elite: Dangerous by Frontier Developments — Kickstarter

?20+ reserves you a copy of the digital game - which has a release date of March 2014. :D

Apparently the projected amount if things keep going this way is ?7m - the target is only around ?1.25m. :D

No fans of Elite here? I'm surprised. Oh well, it's up to around ?350,000 now. I reckon when they pull their finger out and post some screens and videos, it'll climb rapidly again - the original pitch is a bit rubbish, it has to be said!

I was a big fan of frontier. well, it was a bit embarrassing initially, I never read the manual and so didn't understand how either hyperspace jumping worked or autopilot and how it could make landing in space stations possible so I spent ages loading the game up flying about a bit, then 3 painstaking hours manually trying to land on a moon with nothing on it. (nearly as bad as the first week me and my brother spent playing sensible soccer games randomly mashing the control pad while the computer controlled both teams)

eventually I got the hang of it though and it's a nostalgic favourite.

being totally frank though, I have little to no interest in online games like the one they're proposing to make it.

There's a bit of a misunderstanding about the whole online thing - full SP play will also be possible. I'm not sure if that'll be a dedicated SP mode or not, but it's definitely possible to make it fully SP, simply by blocking any human players from entering your game. I used to think like you, but now I think a (limited) MP element will make the game fascinating. Us over at the Frontier forums are planning on forming our own little online group, so that 'we have each other's backs'.

Think about the possibilities: you and a group of mates/forum mates could form a pirate band, or one could fly the cargo around while the other's on escort duty (swapping over occasionally of course). The possibilities are literally endless! :D

A sudden flood in Space sim thanks to kick starter heh :D.Funded this and star citizen :p,2013/14 gonna be an awesome year thanks to kick starter.

?500,000 mark has been passed, but the progress is worryingly slow for me. They need to wheel out some in game footage, preferably combat, sooner rather than later. Videos about procedural generation etc are not going to pull in the non hardcore fans. Show some combat, some epic space battles and explosions - that'll get the pledges flooding in again.

Some really cool dogfighting footage; this game is looking like Star Wars meets Elite!

For some reason, these videos don't want to imbed properly here - I've tried all the usual tricks, such as removing the . in youtube and stuff like that.

Quick update: Pledges can now be made via Paypal. :)

Elite: Dangerous - Kickstarter

The reason why I've kept on about this is because Frontier was such an amazing game back in the day, and a modern version on today's tech would be amazing. However, the latest videos have made it clear that Braben's vision is not merely of an amazing space based game. Nope. They're planning expansions such as being able to land on planets and go 'big game' hunting. The ability to walk around spaceports and do nefarious things like stow away in someone else's ship that's crammed full of Gold cargo and hijack it later on. ;) For me, a better name would be 'Elite: A Second Life', because that's what it's beginning to sound like!

Incidentally, pledging ?90 or more will entitle you to free Elite Dangerous expansions (DLC and proper expansions I'd imagine) - otherwise there will be a charge. So spending more now probably saves a hell of a lot more down the line. :)

I missed out on the originals back in the day. I picked them up a few years later after playing Space Rangers, but they hadn't aged well.

Interested to see how this one turns out.. sounds like they're talking it up a bit, and for a game that has been basically in the works for over a decade, that makes me a bit nervous. Been let down too many times by companies hyping their features, only to find out when you actually get the game, half the things either aren't implemented, or are done poorly.

They're being very open about it all: the KS target is to make the base game only - but they intend to make several expansions; from what I understand it'll be done in a modular format, so the base game will come first obviously, and then expansions will follow. Like you, I'm worried about things not being done well, so I actually agree with the modular format. Get the base game right first and then do everything else one piece at a time, so they can get it right. Seems to me that the vision is to keep making expansions - keep plugging new and interesting things into the game to keep it fresh.

Pledging ?90 or more gets you all those expansions for free. :)

Edit: As you said, the originals have not aged well at all. Check this out:

It's a remake of First Encounters but with much more modern graphics, well worth a look. :)

That does look a whole lot better than I remember it :p Enough to make it playable anyway, and give me that mid 90's nostalgia.

A reboot to Space Rangers has just been released too, so looks like I'll be appropriately starting the new year with some futuristic gaming.
