Since 1882 65 Ashes Series' have been played, with Australia winning 31, England winning 29 and 5 drawn series'. England now travel to Australia looking to retain the Ashes for the first time in Australia since the 1986/87 tour. With the previous tour of Australia ending in a 5-0 whitewash for the host's, England will be hoping to avenge their demons and do the seemingly impossible, retain the Ashes in Australia

England Announce 16 man Squad For Ashes Tour

England have announced the 16 man squad which will be sent on the Ashes tour to retain the urn. The squad throws up no suprises with both youngsters Steven Finn and Stephen Chater both selected. Both Finn and Chater enjoyed a successful summer with England been almost ever present in each match. Finn was easily the best England player in the summer Test Series vs Bangladesh and Pakistan taking four 5 wicket hauls and one 10 wicket haul. All Rounder Chater proved that he was reliable with the ball more than with the bat as he showed a handy knack of taking wickets from his aggressive bowling. If he wants to improve as a cricketer his batting would have to get better as he only averaged around 8 in the test series vs Bangladesh and averaged 15 vs Pakistan.

Other players in the 16 man squad include 20/20 world cup winners Tim Bresnan and Craig Kieswetter who again both impressed during the summer. Craig Kieswetter made his test debut for England in the 4th Test Match against Pakistan where he made 68 in his 1st innings but only 5 in his 2nd. However he has apparently shown to the selectors that he will be a good back up wicket keeper for Matt Prior. Abdul Rashid is in the squad to provide cover for Graeme Swann

Ashes Preview- English Summer 2010

This were the matches i've played on IC2010 before i got to the ashes, I played England's Summer 2010

Ashes's Preview - English Summer 2010

With the 16 man squad now named for the Ashes tour, it's time to look back to the English summer 2010 to see where players such as Steven Finn and Stephen Chater managed to get their foot in the door for England.

England vs Bangladesh Test Series

The summer began with a 2 match test series vs Bangladesh, as recent 20/20 World Cup winners, confidence was high in the English game. This confidence led to a few players playing their first test matches on English soil. Steven Finn who had already played test cricket vs Bangladesh earlier in the year was joined by Stephen Chater, an all-rounder who had gone through the ranks with Worcestershire. Also making his Test debut was Eoin Morgan, who the selecters felt could offer England aggresive batting in Test cricket as well as the short forms of the game.

1st Test Lords

England won by 297 runs

After been put into bat England made a modest 281 all out with Eoin Morgan top scoring with 69. Any doubt over Finn's test ability were disperced when in Bangladesh's 1st innings they were reduced to 159 all out with Finn taking 6-32 in 13.1 overs.
Once again England looked less confident with the bat as they were all out for just 247, but on the plus side Jonathan Trott made 51 and Eoin Morgan again impressed with a quickfire 74.

If anyone described England's batting as not impressive, then Bangladesh's would have been described as woeful. Finn again impressed and he helped England reduce Bangladesh to 72 all out, and took 5-39 off 10 overs. Stephen Chater also showed his Bowling abilities by taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs.

2nd Test The Brit Oval

England won by an Innings and 199 runs

Again Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field, this proved to be a mistake as England finally showed their Batting skills by scoring 471/8 before declaring. In that innings there were many marvelous displays of batting. Jonathan Trott fell just short of his century with a brilliant innings of 96, Kevin Pieterson made 117 before departing. Eoin Morgan again impressed with 66 and Graeme Swann made 50 not out.

Bangladesh also showed improvements with the bat as they made 196 all out with Islam scoring a brilliant 100, Al Hasan also helped with the scoring by making 50 before been bowled by Finn. Finn once more showed his bowling brilliance with figures of 6-62 off 17 overs.

With Bangladesh still trailing, England enforced the follow on and all the hard work made by Islam and Al Hasam crumbled as Bangladesh once more were bowled all out for a pathetic score of just 76. With just 3 players making double figures, this showed how Bangladesh lacked and kind of batting quality. Swann was this times Englands main bowler taking 5-13.

England won Test series 2-0

England's bowlers showed they had a fantastic series as the following figures show

Quick and nice updates. I see, your writing capabilities are too good. Not much of graphics but still very attractive. The way you presented the stats is lovely.

Best of luck for this. :thumbs

Ashes Preview- English Summer 2010 - Bangladesh ODI's

attachment.php

The next series that England faced was the three match ODI Natwest series vs Bangladesh, with England easily beating them in the test series, expectations were again for England to win this series comfortably

England vs Bangladesh ODI Series

The ODI's gave a chance for England to experiment with an already winning line up, for the 1st ODI at The Brit Oval out went Allistair Cook, Matt Prior and Steven Finn. In their places came Craig Kieswetter, to open the batting with Captain Strauss, Tim Bresnan, Paul Collingwood and Stuart Broad who had the Test Series off doing strength and conditioning training.

1st ODI The Brit Oval

England won by 101 runs

Once again England's batting line up didn't look at it's best as they were dismissed for 218 with only Kieswetter, Pietersen and Chater making decent scores of 40, 31 and 33 respectivly. The reason for this however was due to some fine bowling by Al Hasan and Razzak who's spin managed not only to tie England up but also to get wickets with both finishing with 3 wickets each.

With England's batting been average it was no shock that Bangladesh somehow didn't manage to get a good innings. Bangladesh finished all out on 117 with only Ramin causing England problems with 40. As usual despite one Bangladesh batsmen repelling the bowlings the others couldn't follow suit. Broad came straight back into form for his first match with a 5 wicket haul and figures of 5-26 off 6 overs.

2nd ODI Headingly

Bangladesh win by 5 wickets

The shock of the summer came at Headingly when England, who were put into bat, crumbled to just 163 all out. This type of score had been on the cards for a while for the English batsmen as that had been failing to preform lately. Once again Pietersen managed a decent score alongside Ian Bell, with K.P scoring 46 and Bell 33.

Knowing that the Bangladesh Batting hadn't been a lot better than England's, the English may have felt this was a defendible score. However, a superb 77 by Ashraful, Islam's 35 and Ramin's 38 soon showed that Bangladesh were well on their way to levelling the series. Not even a late wicket collapse of 3wickets for just 7 runs could stop them. Steven Finn was especially disappointing in the 4 overs which he bowled going for 35. For England there was a positive in this defeat with James Anderson taking 4 wickets for just 22 runs in 8 overs.

3rd ODI Edbaston

England win by 4 wickets

After once again winning the toss, Bangladesh decided to bat first at Edgbaston, holding it's first international this summer. This seemed at first to be a bad idea as they were at one point 81/5, but hey did finish with a respectable 220 all out. The main contributors were Islam who scored 53 and a fine innings by Mahmudullah who scored 76 before been cheaply run out. Abdul Rashid played for the first time this summer and managed to pick up 2 wickets for 30 runs as the all the bowlers shared the wickets.

England needed 221 to win the match and win the series, but with recent batting preformances this was no way certain. When Strauss and Kieswetter both went out cheaply leaving England 26/2 it looked as if a shock Bangladesh series win might be in sight, however a fine 63 by Kevin Pietersen and a brilliant 105 not out by Jonathon Trott led England home.

This meant that although Bangladesh had a chance to leave England with a trophy, they still left losing yet another series. The England form book may have looked good with a Test Series win and ODI series win but there were many cracks in Englands batting throughout the series. The averages show that many of the top order batsmen were disappointing with Morgan averaging just 7.00 and that the batting of Chater hasn't improved drastically, as despite scoring 33 in one match he only averaged 16.33

Ashes Preview- English Summer 2010 - Ausralia ODI series

England vs Australia 5 match ODI series

England's next series was described as the starter before the main course. With the ashes approaching at the end of the year, this 5 match ODI series vs Australia was a good way to show how well each team had so far prepared. Unfortunately for England, the omens didn't look good.

1st ODI Lords

Australia won by 6 wickets

If this 1st match was to show how the rest of the series would go, then the signs did not look good for England. After been put into bat England were at one stage 83/6 before a timely show of maturity by Chater and a decent knock by Morgan helped kick start the English innings. Chater's highest score for England so far of 60 was easily his best batting preformance and hopefully a sign of things to come, while Morgan was able to score 31.

In reply Australia never looked in trouble with Brad Haddin top scoring with 99 before been caught and bowled by Chater. Other noticables preformances were by Ponting who scored 47 and White who scored 34.

2nd ODI Swalec Stadium

Australia won by 179 runs

After been put in to bat first Australia produced and brilliant display with bat and ball to win this 2nd ODI. Scoring 360 all out, they set England a mammoth total to chase. Such as the batting power of Australia, only one batsmen failed to get into double figures. Ricky Ponting was again at his best scoring 96 off just 74 deliveries, while Brett Lee showed his ability with the bat scoring 59 before been dismissed by Broad, who took figures of 4-99.
.

With England not at all confident with the bat, the idea of chasing this score seemed impossible. This proved to be the case as despite Strauss and Kieswetter putting 80 runs on for the 1st wicket, the inevitbale England batting collapse came. Strauss top scored for England with 53 while Kieswetter manged 35. England fell short of their total after been dismissed for 181.

3rd ODI The Brit Oval

Australia win by 9 wickets

After been put into bat, England were hoping to finally get some batting form back to try and avoid the series defeat. However, England's batting line up again were made to look ordinary after been dismissed for just 113. If it had not been for Swann's 30 and Morgan's 29, England would have been looking at a far worse score. Any confidence that was left in the England camp was now barely visible as England prepared themselves for the Aussie win.

Australia did not fail to produce, and comfortably won the match by 9 wickets. The only wicket to fall was that off Haddin to Bresnan, but despite this early set back Watson (61*) and Ponting (44*) were able to steer the Aussies home easily. With England losing the match this also meant that they were 3-0 down in the 5 match series and had already lost it.

4th ODI Egbaston

England won by 51 runs

Despite only getting 157 all out England somehow managed to grab a win out of this match. The batting once again failed to impress depite a 57 by captain Strauss and 52 by Trott. Kevin Pietersen looked agian out of form as he scored 0 off 4 balls. This looked too small a total for England to defend after seeing what the Aussies were capably of earlier in the series, but somehow ENgland managed to win.

The Australians suffered their worst batting preformance of this series so far as they were easily dismissed for 106 with only Haddin putting up some kind of fight with 35. The English bowlers used the conditions well and it showed of the scoreboard with each bowler getting in on the wickets. Tim Bresnan was able get the Aussie batsmen in all kinds of difficulties with his bouncers and this show when he forced Haddin to try and defend a speedy bouncer only for it to clip the edge of his bat into the waiting hands of Swann.

5th ODI Headingley

Australia won by 3 wickets

Despite scoring a briliant 305 all out, England were unable to stop the Australia juggernaught power to victory. Easily the best English batting preformance of the series, with Ian Bell top scoring with 91, K.P scoring 63, Swann scoring 38, Chater scoring 37 and Morgan scoring 31.

However, any idea that England might be able to get the series back to a repectable 3-2 were dashed when Australia managed to creep home. The man to lead the line once more for the Aussies was none other than Ricky Ponting. Scoring 89 before falling to Swann, who took 4-64, Ponting had managed to keep the Aussie innings together. He was not alone as Watson helped himself to 52 before again falling to Swann.

With Enlgland losing the match, they lost the series 4-1. The disappontment of such a poor series was seen on all the players faces, as no-one likes to lose to the enemy. However, as long as England play better later in the year against them, the disappointment could become jubilation.

Ashes Preview- English Summer 2010- Pakistan Test Series

England vs Pakistan 4 Match Test Series

After the disappointment of the 4-1 ODI series loss to Australia, England was hoping that they could get back on form in the longer format of the game. Up next for England was Pakistan. The last time Pakistan visited England it ended in controversy with the alleged ball tampering issues, and the ECB were hoping this series wouldn?t bring up any more controversy.

1st Test Headingley

England won by an innings and 15 runs

With the recent test series against Bangladesh won comfortably, England was hoping for more of the same against a stronger cricket nation. With conditions at Headingley favouring the bowling side more, it was a shock that the Pakistan captain chose to bat first. This shocking decision immediately came back to haunt Pakistan as they were dismissed without putting up a fight for just 98. England?s bowling attack enjoyed the conditions as Anderson, Broad and Chater picked up 3 wickets each.
England themselves didn?t have the greatest of batting displays as they were dismissed for a tame 191, with only Cook and Strauss doing any decent damage with the bat. Cook scoring 56 and Strauss scoring 38. A lot of the players got themselves into situations where they could have improved their runs but got out as they were gaining momentum.
Not for the first time this summer poor batting dominated the headlines. Pakistan knew they needed to at least get a half decent score to have any chance of winning, but unfortunately their performance was worse than the 1st innings as they were dismissed for just 78. In all the negatives of the batting on show at Headingley, there were plenty of positives from the bowling with Steven Finn managing to pick up yet another 5 wicket haul for just 24 runs.

2nd Test Egbaston

England won by 198 runs

After Pakistan's embarassing loss in the first match, the team looked a lot shaper in the nets (mainly due to me putting the batsmen ratings up;)) and arrived at Egbaston in good spirits.

England won the toss and elected to bat, which seemed a good idea as both the opening batsman enjoyed scoring out in the middle. Strauss made 52 while Cook scored a brilliant 132. Once again batsmen lower in the order managed to start to look good before getting out, this had been a real problem for England this summer. England finished all out for 289

With the previous poor scores still in the memory for Pakistan they knew they had to improve drastically if they wanted any chance of winning the match. The Pakistan batsmen did improve but once more the total wasn't a score expected from a top test playing team. Pakistan were dismissed for 195, although Iqbal did put on a marvellous 91 as well as Ul Haq who scored 53. Swann enjoyed figures of 4-33.

England scored 287 all out in the 2nd innings with Strauss again showing his batting abilities with a score of 95, Jonathon Trott also scored a decent total of 59. The spin of Kaneria did most of the damage as he took 4-50.

Pakistan knew that the target set was not impossible to reach, but despite getting a good start, managed to fall to 188 all out. Alam top scored with 40 runs as Pakistan were bowled over by Swann who took 4-37, and figures of 8-70 in the match.

3rd Test The Brit Oval

England won by an innings and 91 runs

Finally the England batting preformances started to improve as they reach 396 allout after choosing to bat. Kevin Pietersen top scored with 155 while Allistair Cook also continued his fine form by scoring 58. Stephen Chater, looking for his first test 50 made 30 runs before been dismissed, but showed good grit and determination to get through a tricky opening spell.

After the improvements in the batting at Egbaston, Pakistan fell back into old habits by been all out for just 120. Despite a valiant knock from Captain Butt of 44, Pakistan fell to the pure pace of England's Stuart Broad, who picked up figures of 5-20.

England enforced the follow on and Pakstan, who did improve with the bat, still fell for low score of 185 all out, with Butt again scoring well with 43 and was help by Ul Haq who finished not out on 45. Steven Finn was the pick of England's bowlers with figures of 4-46 as England won the match and the series.

4th Test Lords

England won by 404 runs.

With the series already won, England were able to make changes to their test team to blood some of the youngsters. Craig Kieswetter came in to replace Matt Prior as wicket keeper, but also to open the scoring with Cook, who was captain for the match. This meant that Strauss was able to enjoy a rest as well as Stuart broad who picked up a niggling injury the day before the test, meaning Abdul Rashid was able to make his test debut.
After electing to bat England made 333 allout (unlucky number) with many batsmen finding their form. Cook made 52, as well as Kieswetter scoring a maiden test fifty by scoring 68 in an impressive debut. Pietersen also enjoyed his time in the middle with a score of 76 while Chater again showed his handyness with the bat at the moment by scoring 28.

Pakistan scored 172 all out in their first innings with K.Akmal scoring 58 and Butt, again scoring well, with 42. The highlight of this innings was Rashid picking up his first test wickets with figures of 3-10. The two spinners, Rashid and Swann, played well together and showed how good England could be with two spinners in the side.

England's 2nd innings were a joy to behold as captain Cook led from the front in a display of aggressive batting. Although Kieswetter fell early for just 5, Cook scored 67 with help from a brilliant Trott innings of 92. Not to be beaten, Pietersen joined in on the scoring with a fantastic 142. England declared on 357/7

Chasing a big total, Pakistan knew that they didn't have a chance, so it was no suprise that they fell to just 114 all out. Farhat scored the only noticable knock of 44. Once again the main damage was spin with Swann taking 4-19 and Rashid taking 3-3.

England won the match and won the series 4-0.

England vs Pakistan 2 match 20/20

With England the newly crowned 20/20 world champions against the former 20/20 champions these matches were looked on with great anticipation. Pakistan were able to win both 20/20 matches and finally started to look like the team they used to be.
In the first match England set Pakistan 176 to win with Collingwood top scoring for England with 51. Pakistan reach the target with 2 overs left as Rezzaq scored an unbeaten 57. The only upside for England was Chater again taking wickets with 3-32.

The 2nd match saw Pakistan set England 173 to win with Afridi scoring 56. England were all out for 155 as only Kevin Pieterson showed some skill with bat scoring 45 before falling to Rezzaq.

England vs Pakistan 5 Match ODI series

1st ODI Edgbaston

England win by 9 wickets

After been put into bat Pakistan set England a modest total of 185 to win. This was mainly due to Afridi's 46 not out and Butt's 44. All rounder Chater was again in the wickets with 4-48, while he was helped by Graeme Swann who ended with figures of 4-19.

England chased down the total with no major hiccups. The two openers, Strauss and Kieswetter, both showed their class as they eased past their half centuries. Strauss ended the match 73 not out while Kieswetter fell for 70 off 61 balls. Kevin Pietersen hit the winings runs as he finished 41 not out.

2nd ODI Headingley

England win by 18 runs

The 2nd ODI was a gripping battle between both sides. Eoin Morgan showed a return to form with a brilliant 78 to help England get to 227 all out. The amazing sight of 4 run out's in the match showed how England were able to throw away their wickets.

Pakistan came so close to winning the match until a late batting collapse eased England's nerves. This was mainly due to a brilliant 110 not out by Umar Akmal who unfortunately for him found himself watching the wickets fall from the non-strikers end.

3rd ODI The Brit Oval

England win by 8 wickets

Despite an impressive 53 from Butt, Pakistan collapsed to 110 all out as Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann dominated. Bresnan took 4-16 and Swann took 4-5. 5 Batsmen failed to get off 0 as the batting frailties of Pakistan were exposed.

Once again England needed to chase a low total and failed to disappoint. Pietersen again showed how in form he was by scoring 56 not out of 32 deliveries. The downside was how the openers preformed this time with both Strauss and Kieswetter getting in but failing to push on.

4th ODI Lords

England win by 7 wickets

If Pakistans batting in the last preformance was to go by, you would have thought it couldn't have got any worse. However, a woeful Batting display saw Pakistan all out for just 84. The main wicket taker was Michael Yardy who came into the side as England looked to experiment more. He took 4-18 in an impressive display with the ball. The highest scorer for Pakistan was Rezzaq with 25

England chased down the total, but a had a few minor hiccups alongthe way. Both Kieswetter and the in-form Kevin Pietersen failed to get going with Kieswetter scoring just 8 and Pietersen going for a first ball duck. A good half century by captain Strauss (52) led England to victory in just 13.4 overs

5th ODI Swalec Stadium

Pakistan win by 28 runs

Pakistan were able to claw back some respect after winning the final ODI match but losing the series 4-1. After setting England 175 to win, mainly due to a 71 by Iqbal and a 56 by Kamron Akmal. England were looking to win the match and secure a 5-0 series whitewash. The main culprit to Pakistan's downfall with the bat was again Graeme Swann who ended the match with figures of 6-18, who also ended the series with figures of 18-115

England's batting was very poor in this match and despite a brave knock of 59 by Morgan, who looked to have been guiding England home, fell 28 runs short of their target. Kieswetter and Bresnan both fell for 0.

With the English summer now over, England had the chance to relax before the Ashes tour commenced.

Here are the ODI averages vs Pakistan.

However much I may like to see England doing well, I would suggest you need to dial Swann back a bit. He's good but he's not THAT good;)

i should do, but swann in the game and in real life is pretty damn immense :) just look at his averages in the game in the posts lol.

Anyway, i finally got the boring summaries of the summer outta the way, and now the tour can begin:)

England to Face Western Australia

attachment.php

England's first tour match begins later this morning with Strauss naming an expected line up. The England camp clearly deciding to get it's "main" team use to
the conditions in Australia early, and hope that both batters and bowlers can gain confidence quickly.

With this been called Englands best chance to win on Australian soil, Captain Strauss needs both his batsmen and bowlers to be firing on all cyclinders
before the first Test in Brisbane. With many viewing these warm up games as nothing, the England camp feel that they must take every game as serious
as they would do a test match.

The Team Line up for both teams is as followed.

England
Strauss (c)
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Prior (wk)
Chater
Swann
Finn
Anderson

The selecters main choosing to keep the same group of players who played the Pakistan and Bangladesh series in the summer. The only exception been Eoin Morgan who had
a twinge in his back before the 4 day match. There is a lot of uncertainty to whether Morgan will play the 1st Test in Brisbane or will the selectors not gamble. The warm up
matches will give a chance for Morgan to prove his worth.

Western Australia team to play England:
Robinson
Davis
Swart
North (c)
Voges
Pomberbach
Ronchi (wk)
Magoffin
Duffield
Beer
Hogan

With the match beginning shortly, there will be regular updates including highlights of each session.

I suggest you to keep your originality. The presentation of the previous updates was better. Go with that!

As for the match, England should go for a victory. Four days would be enough for the current English XI (considering their form) to defeat WA. :)
