Story Englands Tour Of The Sub-Continent (part 2)

Day 4 Session 3

England continued in their slow but positive manner, coming into the last session of play. Batty continued to look un-stable edgeing through the slips time and time again. However Trescothick stood firm at the other end. Infact he largely dominated the strike. Battys luck ran out, the potent Dharmasena (who has bowled excellently through this series) fooled him with a slower and flighted ball that just clipped his off stump. Things were looking glum, england at only 171 needed anotjher 72 runs to tie the match. As soon as Trescothick went two runs short of his century england hopes were all but dashed, the man of the innings was gone, he had been out there all day and a slight lapse in concentration cost him his wicket. (it was a delivery that he didnt know where it was going to pitch, thanks to sams exe) and he played the wrong defensive shot. The tail never stood a chance, the runs they picked up were off mis-timed shots. So in the end Sri Lanka deserved the victory, England must re-group for the final game at kandy, after this dissapointing defeat. England were all out for 198 after 66 overs. The series is now tied at 1-1, with one game remaining.

well..at one time it looked like batty(despite being highly unstable) and trescothick might just pull off a win for England.
But not this time i guess.

Nice screens, I take it all those batty shots are near misses?

If so, damn lucky.

3rd and final test at kandy

The last chance for either team to come away with a victory. England win the toss and elect to bat first, praised by all by his positive decision, it makes sense to get first use of this track. England make one change from the last game Johnson replacing hoggard.

Day 1 Session 1

England made an excellent start to the match on a batsmen's paradise of a pitch. Apart from an early edge or two from Trescothick which went for four each time, england have looked relativly untroubled. The shot selection has been perfect so far. Vaughan has looked in his best form of the tour. Executing some lovely drives and cuts through the fast outfield. England have cruised along at just under 4 an over for much of the frist session. Sri Lanka havent bowled to badly but the ball is coming on to the bat so nicely, it could be a long day for the bowlers. Sri Lanka may need to introduce more spin in order to lower the run rate. If this form continues england will be looking to batt for the rest of the day, though with england a potential collaspe is always just round the corner. Vaughan, and then Trescothick both got their half century's before the lunch break, bringin up the 100 partnership for england. Sri Lanka have also given away few byes so far :D At the lunch break England are 108/0 off 28 overs.

Day 1 Session 2

England took a few overs to get back into their stride after lunch, and the first two boundrys came off nicks from trescothick, each time narrowly missing the ever changing slip cordon. As the openers were approaching their 150 partnership trescothicks covers drive went straight to the fielder, who made a good diving catch. Sri Lanka were in jubilant mood, however it was only 147/1, and england still have the experienced middle order to count on. Vaughan was looking excellent against the spin for the first time in the series. Anything pitched short and wide, or even full and wide was driven through the covers, anything slightyl off line was swept, or leg glanced away. Butcher had a couple of scares with an edge or two, but started to settle down before long. England secured another 50 partnership and will now be thinking of a target of around 350/400. Vaughan currently lies on 99, and was unable to get that last run as england shut up shop for the last few overs before tea. England keeping the impressive run rate going, which is just above 3.75. England are 207/1 after 55 overs. 16 extras from Sri Lanka so far.

Day 1 Session 3

England continued in good form after tea, not afraid to use their feet and pick up singles when needed. Butcher began to look more stable, hitting a lovely backfoot cover drive off jaysuriya. However he got his revenge in his next spell. He floated one up very wide off off stump, butchers eyes lit up, he charged down the wicket looking for a front foot square cut, but was a tad to late and it went over the bat, and to the keeper who stumped him. England were 255/2 at this point, the with the new ball approaching, hussain and vaughan were looking to score at least 4 runs per over, which they managed. When the new ball arrived in the 77th over, England took their foot off the pedal in an attempt to prevent any more wickets falling. Murali nearly had vaughan out lbw but the ball was clearly doing to much and the umpire said no. Very few runs scored off the final half a dozen overs. Sri Lanka will come at england with their seamers tommorow, they desperatly need another wicket or two in the morning session. England will be looking to batt day two out for a nice lead for when they field. England are 279/2 after 82 overs. Sri Lanka have given 21 extars.
