Coming from a guy who hasn't played the game.
I can guarantee you this - FTP is far more complex and far more realistic than BT. It's got a wonderful match engine and lots of fantastic feautures. Picking a starting XI is tougher in FTP as well, thanks to values like Technique, Power, and ofcourse, Talents.
Anyways...
The 15th of August of 2008. A special day in history. Not only was it India's 61st Independance day, but it was also the day The Blind Society secured the West Indies' Championship in the SOD competition. A 239 run win over Cascade away at Cascade CG meant that The Blind Society were the first human-run team to raise the prestigious trophy, and the first human-run team to claim the prizemoney from it as well.
The Blind Society, managed by Zorax, finished the league with 52 points in 14 games, their only loss being to the Giants in the first game of the competition.
After dropping the opening game of the season, TBS went on a magnificent unbeaten streak, handling anything the other teams threw at them. They finished with a nifty NRR of 2.9 as well, second only to Carib Beer Irregulars (Who finished second).
While only 4,488 fans appeared to see TBS clinch the title, twice as many arrive for the penultimate match at The Blind Society CG between TBS and CBI, the match that turned out to be a heavyweight clash for the title. CBI were behind on points, but ahead on NRR, so a win for them would see them secure the championship on NRR. With both teams to face ameature teams for their final games, it was essential TBS won to keep themselves ahead on points. Powered by the spin trio of Murti, Ranjani and Pradip on a dry pitch, and the batting of skipper Mayuri and youngster Nicholas Bourne, TBS secured a 6 wicket victory, much to the joy of the home crowd.
Today Vedananda and Barendran took the Cascade bowling attack to town, scoring 163* and 162* respectively in a mammoth 389 run partnership as TBS piled on a whopping 410/2 in their 50 overs on a flat pitch.
Cascade managed 171 all out in reply, lasting out 46 overs. Ranjani took three wickets and Murti two, with Pradip, Jaspal and Pawan picking up a wicket each. The 4,000 odd fans who had come all the way out to support TBS were whipped into a frenzy as Murti clean bowled the number 11 Lee to wrap up a mammoth 239 run win, and with that, the Div 1.1 championship.
"It's a great feeling. Massive." said TBS skipper Bhavitra Mayuri.
"We kicked off the season poorly, eliminated from the Pavillion Cup early and losing the first game of the season. But the guys really fought back hard, we fought back as a team, and as a result we've accomplished this fantastic feat."
"Hopefully this will be the first of many more to come!" Added Mayuri, with a smile.
Other teammates weren't readily available for comment (Due to partying, duh!), but Zorax managed to take some time out for some words.
"Yea, it has been a wonderful season. Not only have the lads shown what they can do by winning this competition, but they were brilliant in the T20 format as well. We had a bit of a stuttering start, but we've ended this season brilliantly, and hopefully we've made a name for ourselves now. A mention about our youngsters too, they were lagging mid-table, but with a series of resounding wins are set to promote as well! So it's a fabulous season, and an exciting one awaits us!"
He also let loose some details on the team composition for next season.
"We've let go of a couple of players. Talented fellas, but they didn't fit into our future plans. I've got my eye on a few players on the TM, so we'll see how that goes."
"Our team was built around a lot of allrounders this season, players like Jaspal, Murti, Pawan, Bourne and Swathi weighed in with both bat and ball at different stages of the season. Our keepers (Dristi and Mahadevan) were impressive as well, very tidy behind the stumps and contributing with the bat at crucial junctions. They were the key to our success not only in this competition, but in the season as a whole. The wins from the T20 games and from Sportal cup or PCC gave us the momentum and belief to carry into our crucial games in this league."
"However, we may see less of these allrounders next season. They will have a role to play, but hopefully with the new changes in allowing Youth players to represent the Senior team, and maybe with a purchase or two from the TM, we will have more well-defined roles for our players in the future."
"Our spinners played a big role this season in many of our crunch victories. Our pacers like Jaspal, Emankum, Pawan, Srimal and Swathi usually had to take a back seat on the dry, crumbling or slow tracks we usually played on. However, next season expect to see the pacers to play a bigger role as the likes of Nasser, Manjari and Arnberger in particualar likely to make their way into the senior side. Spin bowling will still thrive though, with Lokesh being a very bright prospect, and Murti, Ranjani and Pradip just getting better and better"
"One significant change will be an improvement in our batting. Lads like Richards, Hamdan, Najeeb will be putting more pressure on the current lineup to perform, and we might see a couple more lads joing the team via the TM."
After that insight into the future of TBS, Zorax went off to join his team in their merry making, celebrating their historic moment. With several other wonderful sides expected to join Div 1.1 next season, it will be interesting to see if TBS can retain their title, but as for now Zorax's only worry is to make sure that he doesn't get arrested for serving alcohol to the minors in his team.
