Rahul Dravid has been appointed captain of the Indian team for the forthcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The five-man selection panel met in Chennai on Tuesday ahead of India's third ODI against South Africa and made the decision.

"It's time for us to look ahead," Kiran More, chairman of the selection panel, told reporters after the meeting. "Rahul [Dravid] has done wonderfully well for us whenever given the opportunity including in Pakistan last year. Given how well he has done recently [as captain in the ODIs] it is important that he be given the opportunity [in Tests]."

This announcement follows widespread speculation on whether Sourav Ganguly, who has been missing from the Indian ODI team, would retain his position as Test captain. In the last Test series India played, against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe, Ganguly was captain and led the team to a 2-0 win over a depleted opposition. Dravid, a long-time deputy to Ganguly, has led India in five Tests in the captain's absence, with mixed results. Under Dravid, India won and lost a Test each against Australia and Pakistan last season, while the fifth against New Zealand was drawn.

The selectors would have given Dravid a longer term but left the decision to the new committee that will be in place after the Indian cricket board's elections on November 29. The gruelling season till July includes home Tests against Sri Lanka and England and tours of Pakistan and the West Indies.

The selectors will now meet on Wednesday, in consultation with the newly-appointed Test captain, and coach, and pick the team for the Test series which begins on December 2. They also picked the Board President's XI team that will play a warm-up match against the Sri Lankans. Y Venugopal Rao was named captain of that team. Parthiv Patel was included in the squad as wicketkeeper and vice-captain. There were also opportunities for the likes of Dheeraj Jadhav, Robin Uthappa and Gagandeep Singh to push hard for a place in the Indian team.

Thats good to see, India needed a change from Ganguly. Dravid has a very good cricketing brain and has shown this in the ODI series against SL. Lets see if he will continue this against the same opposition.

I think Dravid is a much more mature and responsible person as compared to Ganguly. Lets see how he copes with the captaincy. He certainly can handle pressure, which is also reflected in his cool and calm batting style.

Ganguly's chances of making it for the Sri Lanka test series looks slim... if he doesnt make it, he has to score big runs in the ranji trophy and hope that kaif or yuvraj fail and make it easier for him to be in contention for the pakistan test series.

CHENNAI, NOVEMBER 23: Things haven?t been going Sourav Ganguly?s way of late but today the good things came in pairs. Even as the national selectors, in a heated four-hour meeting attended by captain and coach, voted for his return to the Test team as an ??all-rounder??, the man himself duly obliged by picking up five wickets for Bengal in a Ranji match.

Sources at the meeting say captain Dravid, coach Chappell and two of the selectors opposed Ganguly?s inclusion in the squad for the First Test against Sri Lanka next month but were outvoted. The compromise was that Ganguly would have just one Test to prove his form, and that?s why the initial plan to name a squad for two Tests was shelved.

gangully should have done the same thing to dravid when he was dropped from the onedayers cuz of poor form , but no he instead gave him a life line and made him a keeper ,

bhajji ,sehwag, yuvraj, parthiv, kaif, zaheer, nehra, and even laxman , are there cuz of gangully , they can never return the favour what gangully has done to them ,

and now see dravid backstabbing idoit !!! he wants gangully out , gangully is still the best batsman india got after Sachin , not even dravid can match his records ,

a good captain does not dole out favors to his former team mates by supporting their selection. ganguly supported dravid at that time because of the enormous potential that he had of succeeding. now ganguly at 33 and not in the fittest of times, is really not better than a youngster! a youngster like kaif or yuvraj can bat better than ganguly now and are very fit and energetic on the field. so dravid is fully right in opposing ganguly's selection. ganguly has been selected solely based on his experience and some lobbying by some of his faithfuls! now he has to repay their faith on him by performing!

DONT BLAME DRAVID FOR OPPOSING GANGULY! ITS NOT ABT INDIVIDUALS! ITS ABT THE TEAM!

P.s: Forgot to mention! Dravid cant match Ganguly's records. You know why? Because he is much ahead of Ganguly in the records!

Good decision from the selectors. Now Ganguly can go back to smashing the bowlers without the pressure of captainship.

Sourav Ganguly was disgrace for one day cricket. He didn't help much in that position. He should help rookies and not be a hot head in Test cricket.

first of all Gangully did not say he did favours , thats what i said ,

2nd u should get ur facts right , in one day cricket gangully is far more better then rahul . his strike rate is the best after sachin in india , sachin and gangully are few players in the world ,who scored so many runs so quickly ,

and how can u say that he is not Fit at 33 ? he has done very well in the domestic games , that proves his fittness .

There is no way Ganguly should go back into the ODI team. India's batting is doing just fine right now. Why change that just for an ex-captain?

and how is indians batting doing fine ? can u please name the top 6 bats man please ?

pease dont include kaif and yuvraj , they are more poor in cricket then gangully, they hit one 50 in 20 matches ,

gangully was not in bad form in oneday cricket , remmber the series in holland this year ? where gangully was the only batsman scoring , he scored 2 90s and others like sachin, dravid ,sehwag , all were going on low scores ,

how much has sachin scored ? in the last couple of games ? why not throw him out ,

this means you have been watching some thing else in the name of cricket

For your information, Kaif and Yuvraj each have a century and at least 2 fifties within their last 20 ODI's starting from the IndianOil Cup in Sri Lanka till this current South African series. Yuvraj has 3 hundreds so far (from IndianOil Cup till date!!). Kaif has also scored heavily in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

top 6 batsmen? we have many... Dravid is again back on his purple patch. Did you see how he scored against Sri Lanka? And dont say Sri Lanka were weak. They came to India as No.2 and went back bruised! Tendulkar started off with a bang scoring two half centuries and hit a few useful knocks. Our only real failure had been Sehwag but he too found his touch in Bangalore. It makes me laugh that you are saying that india is not in form. india is in top form without ganguly

I agree Ganguly was in pretty good one day form BEFORE the Pak visit to India.

And he didnt get 2 90's in Holland. One was against England in the Natwest Series and the other against Kenya in the next match.
