Haier Cup Pakistan revamped for Season IV; complete squad drafts announced

Najam Sethi during a press conference in Lahore.The Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Najam Sethi has officially announced the start of Haier Cup Pakistan. He also mentioned that instead of eight teams, only six would compete as compared to the last two seasons. The six teams to compete this season will be in accordance to Pakistan Super League. Only cities that have had franchises in the Twenty20 league will be allowed to compete in the List-A tournament from this season, and onwards. The six cities to participate will be Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Quetta. Multan will be competing in this tournament for the first time, and although this team has had no experience in the league, Multan will not be considered an underdog because of its rich cricketing history. A darkhorse, perhaps.
Najam Sethi also announced that no team will be allowed to retain any player, hence, there will be a complete squad draft prior to the tournament. Each team will consist of eighteen players, with a maximum of seven overseas players allowed in the squad. The departures of Misbah-Ul-Haq, Younus Khan and Shahid Afridi have left a hole in the tournament's star value, with no established local star power to overwhelm the fans, it will be tough for the youngsters to replicate the same drawing ability as the three mentioned before.
Lahore, the defending champions, will be starting their campaign against FATA in a pre-season warm-up that will be played at the Al-Jazira Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Rest of the teams will also compete in pre-season warm-ups against Bahawalpur, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Rawalpindi. The matches are to be played at the Al-Jazira Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai and the Ajman Oval in Ajman.
The main tournament is set to begin with the opener being played at the Sharjah Cricket Ground in Sharjah, between Islamabad and Quetta. In the main tournament, each team will play the other team only once, that is due to not having the tournament be played on the homeland of these teams. The right to host the final however, is being retained by the team that won last season, Lahore. Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will host the final of Haier Cup Pakistan after successfully having hosted the final of Pakistan Super League, earlier this year.
