This is a standalone discussion that has evolved out of the "Best Comptuer Brand" thread. Basically, are home built computers better or worse than brand name computers?
Pros of homebuilt computers:
Cheaper - you'll get more performance for say, ?800 than you would in the shops
Free technical support (your humble esteemed self with a few reference books)
Much better performance - I doubt any branded names would use this mobo, which I have
.
You get the satisfaction of putting it all together and seeing it work
.
Also, really easy to do if you have a decent book on it - I used this amazing book as my reference. Pretty much anyone who knows how to use a screwdriver can create one.
They look awesome. Mine has a see through side with beautiful blue lights inside - hmm, must take a picture of that.
Cons:
You also get the frustration of computers, which we've all experienced. Sometimes it can get very frustrating (and thats a good reason to buy a book on it).
Much easier to buy a brand name. Minimal setup required, whereas for homebuilt computers it takes hours for even a fairly advanced power user to construct (not that its difficult). If you get a reputable one, tech support will be decent.
Some of them actually look pretty stylish.
So discuss in this thread, which are the better, and your own experiences of building home computers.
