I've noticed that my PC can take quite a few minutes to shutdown, whereas booting up is very fast. How long should XP take to shutdown and how long do your PCs take on average?

I've noticed the big increase ever since getting the 'net. Is there anyway to make it shutdown more quickly? My old PC doesn't have the net and shuts down almost instantly.

The time depends upon the number of processes that are running. Windows has to end all the processes before shutting down and if they are busy doing something then the time taken to shut down increases. But generally it shouldnt take much time. Have you scanned your PC using a good anti-spyware or anti-virus ?

Every week and it's only found things a couple of times (other than cookies). Both times, I told it to delete, sod quarantine. I noticed the problem as soon as I got the 'net though. I suppose that puts on a few extra processes. I average around 38-40 processes, is that too much?

How long does yours take, AbBh?

i have calculated my pc timings. opens in 9 secs [to the dektop] and shuts down in 4 secs.

It takes at the most 10-15 seconds for me. Do you shut down after closing all the running programs(only the ones accessible from the taskbar) ?.

I only use Windows Defrag, I've only just found a free one (Auslogics Disk Defrag) will it make a difference to shutdown speed if I defrag with that?

You could try to reduce amount of time that Windows XP waits for the processes to close before it kills them

1] Open the Registry Editor by typing regedt32 in the Run dialog box.

2] Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Select WaitToKillAppTimeout and lower the value to maybe 2000 (it is the amount of time in milliseconds).

3] Select the HungAppTimeout value and set it to 1000.

4] Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Set the WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the value to 2000. Select the HungAppTimeout \newline value and set it to 1000.

5] Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l. Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set it to 2000.

6] Close the Registry Editor.

You could try lowering the values.

Have you done any special course you know so much.

Now there is a little tool that I use, which is located here;

http://www.download.com/TuneXP/3000-2086_4-10290928.html

Simply, it is a program that has lots of different options to tweak XP so that shutdowns are faster and so on. It is a small program, and works excellently for me.

My shutdowns were around 20 seconds, down to 3 seconds with this. People worried about spyware - this is fine! No problems whatsoever.

Before clicking madly around, make sure you read the help section. It tells you what the typical person should enable to help there OS.

There is no need to run this all the time - keep it installed (its only 1mb) and it doesnt need to run in the background.

Give it a go, see if it helps.

Mine takes less than 10 seconds to shut down, and not long at all, probs 15 seconds to boot up.
