A recent ICC decision has made it likely that Australia will take on the Rest of the World in a "Super Series". South Africa is likely to host this one-Test three-ODI series in 2005. An ICC spokesman said the idea to play such a series was approved in the last meeting, held in India. He added that the series would go ahead if it had the backing of various cricket boards around the world.
The thought of Ricky Ponting's men lining up against a team that includes the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Shoaib Akhtar is a mouth-watering prospect to fans. Australia's dominance in recent years tips them to be the chosen ones, although South Africa and India are not too far away. It was decided that the team heading the ICC Test rankings at the time would take on a team comprising the best players from the rest of the world.
A spokesperson is quoted as saying, "In brief, it was tentatively agreed to have what we might call a Super Series 2005 - that's as far as it's gone. The top Test side would play a select team in a five-dayer and three one-dayers if the whole thing is approved." While nothing concrete has been decided yet, the series would certainly draw lucrative sponsorship, and this, more than anything else, could ensure that it takes place.
