Its a question that has been haunting me ever since the Pakistan series.
A man of dignity who has played the game for close to 2 decades, was given the captaincy of his team at the fag end of his career.
I'm not saying that this was a bad move.Infact,it was a very good move considered the way he has marshalled his resources and come out thumping in the face of controversy.

Kumble, was also the vice-captain to Sachin Tendulkar in 1996.Should he have been given a chance there ?
Would'nt he have carried his team well ?

Has it come a bit too late for the Indian Jumbo ?

Yes definetley, he should have been givn this oppurtinity much earlier considering the cricketing brain he has....

I remember a ODI match that Kumble captained, in 2001 when England toured India. It was the match at Chennai which India won. I was there at the stadium that day! :)

Captaincy has come late, but I guess he is the kind of cricketer who never complains about it.

Personally I think the Indian selectors made a mistake in going for Dravid as captain after Ganguly instead of handing it to Kumble.

I suppose Kumble's absence on ODIs (for a while now) was part of their thinking as they didn't want to split ODI and Test captaincy (which has happened now anyway)

But,during Ganguly's reign as captain,Kumble hardly played any ODI cricket.
Anyways, its good that he is captain.
Regd that match in cHennai, well i can't forget that.
However, there was absolutely nothing reported by the media that Kumble cpatained the game.

Actually I saw a recent "highlights" in NEO Sports, that's how I remembered that Kumble was the captain ;)

I remember in 04, Kumble was nearly out of the side. Harbhajan was at his peak and was ripping through everyone. Only through an Injury to the Turbinator did Kumble get a go, scalping 24 wickets in three games.

So no. It's fine i think.

Kumble needs to learn to be a bit more attacking. In a defensive manner he followes the ball and puts fielders out on the boundary when someone hits a four. India have a good bowling attack as we have seen and Kumble need to keep an aggressive field and trust his bowlers to get it in the right area.

Kumble is not all that good a captain. He showed that at Sydney when, albeit with every ounce of luck against him, he was unable to deal with the retaliation of Symonds and Hogg, and almost in Perth when Symmo and Gilly took the attack to him. I hope this is more of a learning curve issue, though.

Kumble? No. If just on Captaincy skills, Ganguly is by far the best that India have.

i think this thread should open before Kumble was not captain, not now when he get wins. Its just a typical Subcontinet fan`s thinking.

Maybe. But not because his captaincy is good. I don't believe it was that good in the test series so far. I think he's the kinda guy who performs better as captain and has good leadership. 'm not sure his on-field decisions are always the best, he probably hasn't done a hell of a lot of captaining though.

No I don't think so, he follows the ball to much. But I think now hes bowling good he's a good motivator for his team-mates.

I have opened it due to the fact that a TV channel in India asked this question yesterday.

Leadership is important.
I have no doubt in saying that any other captain [ apart from Ganguly] would have cracked under pressure after the Sydney fiasco.

Motivation is the key here-maybe cause he is the most qualified of all Indian players in the team.He is a comp.engineer.

Hahaha Kumble is the worst captain ever. Gilly and Symonds were going at 8 runs an over so what does he do? He goes defensive thinking they are going to slog and get out instead of taking singles. That only works against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, teams they can compete against.

hehhehehhehehe i think your team will do well to defeat namibia, and what about your captain he is a joker can,t score can't captain he is good for nothing, which captain will blast his mouth about a ordinary bowler like tait in the press and give his part timers more overs trhan his so called fast bowler, and get ready for another hammering at adelaide, kumble captaincy is great
he is a leader up to which the team looks for inspiration its not only about tactic fool
