It's just not cricket

Any audience the IPL gets apart from the following in India is only a bonus. Nothing more than that. As long as it doesn't lose its fans in India, the tournament will be safe.

:doh

IPL = Indian Premier League

Indians will love it and I don't think there is anything wrong in that. I love IPL does that mean I don't like Test cricket or ODI cricket.

Its for Indian audience. If you have problem with this then switch off the TV or change channel.

And just sticky a thread called "Frustrated by IPL Post Here". I see no point in giving explanations every month in new thread.

Take a gander at these:

So no one watches except for Indians, and they don't even show up to the games.
You may have forgotten that it is called the Indian Premier League.

sohum added 2 Minutes and 6 Seconds later...

I've got many more photos available - even of games in the finals, if anyone is interested in seeing them. :p
In your haste to show something that doesn't actual prove anything, you forgot that the IPL was moved out of India this year because of clashing security issues with the Indian general election. If you expect crowds in South Africa to be full of Indian supporters, then you're being just a little unfair to the IPL.

To put it into context, how many people do you think would show up if the English Twenty20 Cup was held in India? I think they'd have to scrap the tournament mid-way.

International Moderator "Hohum" had this to say yesterday" "In what context? How is watching sports not a waste of time, then? I mean you could be doing a lot more productive things than watching Test cricket for 5 days. I don't think the IPL is any more a waste of time than any other sport (except maybe lawn bowls)".

As a "MODERATOR" aren't your comments supposed to be "MODERATE"?

Answer honestly ... have YOU personally ever played lawn bowls? If you haven't, you have no right stating that watching lawn bowls is a greater waste of time than watching any other sport. You obviously have no understanding of the incredible skill required to play lawn bowls at the level that is televised. Before you make any more smart aleck remarks about a sport that is played by more people than will ever be played by cricket, you want to get out on the green and see how you go playing against a competent lawn bowler. Only then will you know what a stupid comment you have made.

It was a most offensive comment, not in keeping with the rules that I agreed to to participate in this forum, and certainly most "UN-MODERATOR-LIKE"
I apologize if I hurt you in anyway. That was meant as a joke to diffuse the obviously tense atmosphere in this thread. I understand each sport has its own difficulties and professionals in any sport are extremely gifted individuals. I did not mean any disrespect to the sport of lawn bowls and I repeat it was a joke.

That said, you do have a few factual/philosophical inaccuracies in your argument. First of all, cricket is played by more people than people know about lawn bowls. This is simply because India plays cricket and just the Indian cricket-playing population eclipses the global lawn-bowl playing population, would be my estimate.

Secondly, and I've said these a million times on these forums, it's never a valid argument to say, "you can't criticize something if you can't do it as well." If that were the case, there'd be no such thing as constructive criticism. For example, you can't criticize Windows because you can't program an operating system. Or you can't criticize any professional cricket player's decision because you're not as good as them... dig?

Anyhow, apologies if the lawn bowl comment struck a chord. It was nothing but a (seemingly poor) attempt at humour.

Thats why you are nominated as Cricket Chat poster rather than funny member.

I don't have a problem with the IPL but what I don't like is cricketers electing not to play for their country and instead go to IPL. Also I think its too much cricket the organisers are creating.

You don't need a champions league that's just a waste of time another way for the BCCI to make more money. The IPL should just be every 2 years and not every year.

Ok if it is that then its just waste of time, the World20 and IPL are enough 20/20 competitions plus every country also has the domestic version as well. So its just over kill

Does it really matter, though? There are a BILLION PEOPLE in India, that in itself is a large enough audience.

But I can see why the ratings fell. The novelty wore off, and it was mostly on Pay-per-view in the UK, US, AUS/NZ I think. And only 3 big name players were sold compared to the many in the 1st edition.

The thing is, it was not held in India this year which led to a massive fall in the TV ratings too. If it was in India, the buzz would have been a lot more higher and that translates into more people tuning in to the games (in India).

We are not worried about its TV ratings in other countries. This is an Indian competition, and the concern is about th Indian TV ratings. Other fans will automatically follow on Cricinfo and talk about it on PC (even though they hate IPL).

I don't actually know where this thread is going now tbh. You have most of the Indian fans saying that if you don't like it don't watch it, but tbh I thought most people had a problem with the bolded part of this post.

I wouldn't mind discussion going in this direction since you can't really change someone's opinion about Twenty20 or the IPL, it seems.

It's definitely an issue if the players are choosing IPL over Twenty20 cricket because of the money. However, I don't think the ICC has any right to put caps on salaries and the like. The ICC basically has two options: (1) create a window and thus eliminate the conflict or (2) ban the IPL. It seems like its far too late to do (2) now that they have officially sanctioned the league, so they basically have to try and isolate it from the international calendar, now.

Also, it is my opinion that the interest in the IPL will fade over the next two seasons so that it doesn't become as much of an issue. We have seen an overwhelming amount of T20 cricket of late and with the Champions League coming up, things won't be getting much better. People will no doubt start missing the opportunity to see a Sehwag double or a Harbhajan 5-fer (although that is a rarity in itself :p). So the ICC may get away with doing nothing at all, as the contracts expire. But, they really should go ahead and make a window for it. If the IPL dies out, fair enough they can get rid of the window. If it doesn't, at least they will have put it into a fixed chunk of time.

Apart from that, it is really the onus of players and boards to make sure their players aren't over-working themselves. Just like the Aussie board stepped in and prevented their players from playing in the IPL due to a tough summer of cricket. You can't just let your players do whatever they want and then blame the IPL. That's like blaming alcohol for Andrew Symonds' problems instead of Andrew Symonds for his alcohol problems.

Can you give example for that bolded part?

Ther New Zealander's last year, Dwayne Bravo this season (He would of been their if there was no IPL) Chris Gayle.
