MATCH REPORT
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. Gillespie opened the bowling for Australia and started off with a perfect delivery, just missing off stump and almost hitting the wickets. The two opening bowlers for Australia started off with maidens and it seemed as if New Zealand were making no effort to score any runs. The shaky start continued as McMillan edged to second slip and gulley in the same over, but no-one was there, and he managed to score 33 runs until Gilespie bowled a bouncer followed by a perfect yorker to dismiss McMillan in the 10th over. New Zealand were now 1/40. Flemming was going along very slowly, blocking almost every ball, on the other hand, the new batsmen, Astle tried slogging the ball but was caught at deep mid wicket, bowled Gillespie for a duck. Bichel and MacGill started bowling to New Zealand and on the 22nd over, Bichel was denied a plum LBW appeal. The new batter Styris was having trouble with MacGill's spin bowling, and ended up LBW by MacGill. Danger man Cairns was in next and started hitting the ball in the air and was finally out for 24 by a slower ball bowled by Harvey. A good batting tail by New Zealand meant that Australia had to chase 176 runs to win the game. An exciting match was set in place!
Australia got off to a bad start with Ponting getting out first over, playing a square cut too late and getting caught by the wicket keeper for just 1 run. The new batsman, Bevan was bowled by a slow yorker that went under the bat. Australia were in trouble at 2/4. A solid partnership by Lehmann and Hayden and Lehmann got Australia off to a better start. They claimed a lot of singles and the occasional boundary. Australia were keeping up to the Required Run Rate and were travelling nicely. The 50 partnership came in the 17th over by a cracking shot by Lehmann that went to the boundary. New Zealand bowler, Bond was getting fustrated bowling over and around the wicket and finally got a breakthrough getting Hayden out for 33. The score was 3/81 requiring just 3.17 runs an over with 7 wickets in hand. Martyn fell victim to another yorker and was sent back to the pavilion early for 6. The hundred came up for the Australians in the 25th over, the required run rate was now 2.92. The only concern for Australia was the wickets in hand, and it got worse as Lehmann was run out for 40. Harvey was then bowled trying to play a straight drive, Australia were now in trouble at 6/106. Australia soon found themselves at 7/130 and were batting strategically, getting Gilchrist on strike for most of the time. Gillespie was given out by a bad LBW decision and Australia were 8/148. The only problem Australia had was the wickets in hand. Flemming put Vettori in at the right time and MacGill was bowled, Australia were now 9/153. Australia required another 23 runs, with 12 overs left and a required run rate of 1.92. New Zealand appeals for LBW, but was denied! It was down to the wire! Australia needed just 8 more runs to win. Gilchrist plays a leg glance and McGrath had the strike. He plays a defensive stoke but is hit on the pads. New Zealand appeal and McGrath is given out! Unlucky decision and New Zealand win by 7 runs! What an exciting match!
New Zealand go to the next game with the ODI series lead 1-0.
