Legends At Battle XII
Final
The Undisputed Era vs The Baker Street Boys at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Toss: The Baker Street Boys won the toss and chose to bowl
It all came down to this at the end of a sizeable 59-game season of Legends At Battle - The Undisputed Era, undisputedly the most consistent team all season tasting defeat just once in their 9 official matches pitted against the similarly (although to somewhat of a lesser degree) dominant The Baker Street Boys, incidentally the only team to overcome them thus far in the Season XII final with more than just a title at stake. Due to recent developments, whichever manager goes on to win also wins an official PC medal for their efforts. Kane Williamson, the Baker Street Boys' skipper however remained unnaturally calm and chose to field upon winning the toss, not a choice most old school captains would have made especially at the MCG where the the team batting second always has a tougher job. But it remains to be seen if he can pull off a Pat Cummins and silence a 100,000 crowd. The two teams lined up as follows:

Presented with a brilliant opportunity to snuff out Warner, The Baker Street Boys fluffed it quite badly with Graeme Pollock dropping him on 49 off a furious Rashid Khan. The latter has struggled over the past few games and a wicket here could have really done wonders to his confidence levels which remain low. And with that, Warner had a half-century to his name at much better than a run-a-ball.

48.3 Qadir to Barnes, one run, Great cooperation between Sydney Barnes and Kane Williamson
48.4 Qadir to Williamson, legbye, Defensively played by Kane Williamson
48.5 Qadir to Barnes, one run, Great cooperation between Sydney Barnes and Kane Williamson
48.6 Qadir to Williamson, one run, That was a very risky single.
End of over 49 (5 runs)

Abdul Qadir 7.0-0-36-1
Sydney Barnes 15(16b)
Kane Williamson 68(131b 2X4)
And they got them!! Perhaps in a move to entice Barnes into making a mistake, Imran brought Qadir back on rather than Waqar Younis to bowl the 49th and Kane Williamson finally took a more proactive role by deciding to finish the games in singles alongside Barnes à la George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes from way back in 1902.

So after one of the biggest LAB seasons in recent history, it was The Baker Street Boys who were crowned champions and deservedly so after being the only team to beat The Undisputed Era who looked untouchable all season and looked all but set to romp to the title. They were by no means any lesser in terms of dominance winning a whopping 9 out of 10 matches and losing just once with a lineup consisting of players of the calibre of Sachin Tendulkar, Graeme Pollock, Greg Chappell, Kane Williamson, Kapil Dev, Curly Ambrose and Sydney Barnes among others. It was also heartening to see Williamson, a man who had channeled his inner Jardine throughout this final finally win a title as skipper in a limited overs tournament following several heartbreaking near misses over the years and hence proved nice guys too can finish first on occasion.

It was quite a heartbreaking finish for The Undisputed Era, a team that remained undisputed all season except for when they were facing above mentioned team. Possessing one of the deadliest pace-bowling lineups in LAB history spearheaded by Bart King, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan among others such as Malcolm Marshall, Keith Miller and Alan Davidson who were warming the bench, they forever remained just one wicket away from claiming the title. But for all their brilliance with the ball, they were eventually thwarted by a stubborn No 11 in Sydney Barnes and made to wonder what might have been had certain things gone their way in the end. While Williamson finally got what he deserved, AB de Villiers still couldn't catch a break as far as a limited overs title was concerned despite outperforming the likes of Bradman, Richards, and Tendulkar with the bat over the course of the season.

Another man on whom the cricketing gods finally smiled was Sachin Tendulkar, who had given to cricket perhaps more than any player in history only to fall short of claiming the LAB title prize that had constantly eluded him in over 12 seasons of playing. Not anymore, and due to his stellar returns with the bat where he led both the tournament's and The Baker Street Boys run charts with 564 runs at 56.40 whilst striking at 96.58 runs per 100 balls from his 10 matches, he was also declared Player of the Tournament ahead of several deserving candidates such as Bart King (20 wickets at 21.20), Kapil Dev (18 wickets at 26.50; 174 runs at 34.80), Brett Lee (20 wickets at 20.75) and not to mention AB de Villiers (468 runs at 78.00, SR 108.33). He had carried his team on his shoulders for most of the business end of the tournament following a slow start first-up and deserved to be carried himself.
That's all for Legends At Battle Season XII. Bella ciao!
