Ferguson retires as Manchester Utd are crowned champions

Legendary Manchester Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson has retired at the age of 65.

Ferguson ended his career with his team as champions of the Barclays Premiership at a rainy Old Trafford on 13th May 2007.

"I looked back at my career that evening and thought there is nothing more to achieve in football management. I can now spend more time with my family," he said.

Chief Executive David Gill has unveiled Norwich-born Lee Payne as the new manager, 51 years Ferguson's junior.

"Lee Payne has the knowledge and passion to take Manchester Utd to glory like Sir Alex Ferguson did," said Gill.

Revolutionary new system to Premiership

The FA Premier League have announced a new format for the competition that will come in for the 2007-8 season.

The league has been cut down to 16 teams, as opposed to 20 in previous seasons. The teams have been split into a North Division and a South Division based on geographical location.

Once each team in each division has played each other twice, once at home and once away, the top four teams in each division will play in national quarter finals. This will then be reduced to semi finals and a final at Wembley Stadium.​
