Marcus Trescothick - Hated by selectors?

it would definately have to be Tresco imo, hes the most experienced captaining wise, out of Flintoff, and Strauss as he has been vice-captain for a number of years am i right? So in Vaughans absence, then he should be the skipper. All rounders generally have a lot to do in a match, so Freddie shouldnt be burdened with the captaincy as well.
Strauss shouldnt be the captain full stop, as both Freddie and Tresco are more experienced cricketers than he. And sometimes it seems that he hasnt a clue, and isnt very innovative it seems.

Yes Tres was Vaughans vice captain for all Vaughans reign iirc.
I should add he was vice-captain for most of Nasser Hussain's reign as well.

I don't want to burden Trescothick with the captaincy; he is one player who we need to be firing on all cylinders when batting. Having said that though, he did score 193 in Pakistan when he was captain.

I feel Marcus Trescothik is more like Adam Gilchrist and Mark Boucher have been for their countries.
Gilly was the vice for Steve Waugh as well as for The Punter.
Boucher too had been the vice-captain for Shaun Pollock's reign.
Maybe the selectors just want to give the captaincy in fresh, young hands.

Btw,how many of you feel that Strauss / Flintoff will lead England in the World Cup ? [Given Vaughan's condition]

But should Fintoff be burdened with the captaincy for the Ashes? Being an allrounder of his calibre, the only one in international cricket who is expected to perform every game with bat and ball, and coming back from injury. The captaincy seems to be a little much. Trescothick does seem a logical choice in my opinion, but if he doesn't want to be captain then what can you do?

Obiously, look out for some young blood.
maybe the likes of Hoggard,Harmison ?

I think Colly would be a good captain.

Yes! I'm not the only one! He just seems to me that he is a bloke who isn't flustered by anything and it's getting to teh stage where a good innings is pretty much guaranteed now. His bowling is very underrated, and as for his fielding, well it's just exceptional.

I reckon Freddie is the right man for the job, simply because he is an all-rounder and can understand the game from both (batsman and bowler's) perspective. He is aggressive too, which is an important trait that a captain should possess. Test series in India is a prime e.g. Not many teams draw test series there.
Tresco and Strauss are very important players and they should be allowed to concentrate on their batting.

I agree that Colly would be a good choice, however it could lead to problems. He hasn't been bowled much in his test career so far, and if he's captain he might choose not to bowl himself, even if he feels it is the right thing to do due to the situation of the match, because if he goes for a few you can imagine the press reaction.

To be honest, I'm unsure of who should be captain at the moment. Flintoff didn't convince me, and as has already been said overburdening him would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Strauss has yet to convince me as well, but I think anyone who's put in the job will struggle to live up to Vaughan's legacy, partly because he's such a good captain and partly because of our severely injury-weakened bowling attack.

Tbh, after the 2 tests Strauss has been captain, I don't see any need to replace him. His bowling choices and field settings have been superb, and he has done well with the bat at the same time.
