Minecraft

Computerised lego basically. I am slightly shocked you haven't heard of it?

The biggest indie success story, possibly ever. Guy called Notch Perrson started coding a game in his room that isn't really like anything else that exists. It may have entered full release state by now, but it was essentially in beta for about 2-3 years and has made him something stupid like ?300m dollars.

I've heard of it, just not sure what it is.

Free to play?

Nope, this is - Minecraft

This is the old version, doesn't have the survival modes or obviously any of the expansions.

Obviously in the proper game you don't start with anything and have to find it all. Also at night creepers come out that can kill you unless you're in a sealed off area with light. So you're first aim is always to build a saftey home, then you start mining away seeing what lurks beneath. I just went to the top of the highest hill I could see and started tunnelling for the fun of it (I like clicking repeatedly heh) and after eventually finding some caves with gold ore in, one with some mushrooms, and then water. I headed horizontally until the water dissapeared, then started digging until I found lava. At that point I started heading back up and ended up miles away from where I started.

I keep meaning to grab the full price game, if only to support an indie. An indie who admittedly no longer needs the cash heh

Dammit Mark. Because of you I just spent 30 minutes building myself a two floored mansion with glass floors covering my initial mining/dig location. I don't know why I did it, but I did :p Cosy.

It can be. It's a completely single player game, but there are servers that people host where people meet up and just start digging. Normally where you end up with some massive projects being undertaken.

Someone made a completely functional mathematical calculator. Strange heh.

It's basically just a massive sandbox for doing what you want. The graphics are very basic (although you can download texture packs that improve them).

Generally a server will be in survival mode. So people share resources and find themselves a nice little area to build themselves a home. Check out some youtube videos of what people have built. Mighty impressive some of it.

Of course, a public server opens up the potential for the odd griefer to turn up and redirect the carefully constructed lava trap you made into your front room :p

The single player survival game is basically a tense affair as you slowly mine further down, uncovering caverns as you go and laying torches everywhere! Generally one of those games that needs the wiki open so you can learn what crafts what. For example, get some wood, use your craft bit and you can make a craft table. Then with some stone can make a better pickaxe. Eventually a sword etc... They still develop it, so it's still having stuff added to it. Definitely try out the link I posted to the free version. I just enjoyed digging for a while and seeing where I went. Then I built a house :p

Edit/// To any mods, feel free to move all these minecraft posts into a minecraft thread of it's own :)

I learned how to move posts into a new thread win/win :p

I remember trying to check out Minecraft twice in the past, but it wanted me to pay even though it was in beta. The link above is working though, so I guess I didn't look hard enough.

From all accounts it's more addictive than crack, so it might help with my crack addiction.. I mean, might kill the time while I wait for my new laptop.

It used to cost a fiver whilst in beta, I think it may even be up to 15 now. Even though a lot has been added. If the website demo doesn't appeal there's little point getting the main game :)

Oh, and don't mention crack. Because when you ...

Feck it, I'll just link to it haha -

There's a crazy amount of mods for this game as well. Technic pack and Bukkit pack are supposed to be the two big ones that add all sorts of functionality. To the point where you can have yourself full-on button based traps for the enemies as well as fully functioning lifts/doors/sky rails etc...

Meh, too much effort to get into video games these days.

Wish I'd heard about it a few years ago
