To score runs, get a lot of singles. Run a lot. Tap, nudge, edge and then run. I myself can't hit too well, so I like to take many singles, and then unleash the odd all-mighty slog.

You should also find out your favourite shot and use it time to time. Mine was the pull, so every now and then I'd stay on the back-foot and try to pull whatver I get. Not advisable for hard-ball or against really quick bowlers, but fine to use on the streets.

Also helps that if you are going to hit in the air, look for a gap and try hitting there. Best place is straight over the bowlers head (Hardly any fielders there) or over midwicket (Easiest to do). With some practice you can master the straight-smash or the slog, or even the lofted drive (Top hand should be dominant there...).

But as long as you can bowl well, then you shouldn't worry. Umar Gul isn't a great bat either :p

The art of hitting/slogging is watching the ball. Don't just swing with all your might first off. Start finding the middle of the bat on the ball with lesser powered shots. Also you need to move your feet. Idealy you need to get in line with ball and have your head over the ball. You'll almost never miss the ball like this. The only time you miss/edge the ball is when you reach for balls and play away from your body. These are basic starting tips to batting.

You may find it worthwhile to have a read through this thread (here) as it discusses pretty much what you're asking.

Other than that I'd say weigh up the situation, if you're just paying street cricket chance your arm a bit, get a high backlit and push through the ball, look for the ones and twos (tip and run) - it all adds up.

You may also want to consider just working on one shot at a time, then once you feel you have it mastered move onto the next one and so on. That way you'll develop an armoury of shots rather than just 2 or 3.
