i hate it and think its stupid

Went to a WA vs Vic 20/20 game an couldnt work out who was who.
I never buy the stupid books at the games im there to watch it not read books to try an figure out who took that awesome catch i should be able to look at his back and see who it is.

Its fine when im watching on tv but when your at the game its too hard to know who it is.
Buy them at state matches? They're free in Melbourne, heck you can download them after the game.

Furthermore, you could look at the scoreboard to see who caught something. And at the MCG at least, it always says who fielded after the ball, but catches are always on the scoreboard.

For example: Dravid c Ponting b Lee

Not all sports even have surnames; AFL doesn't. Do you complain that your Freo stars don't wear names on their backs?

Who would honestly care about something this trivial? Twenty20 is a bit of fun, and Australia are trying to liven it up a bit. India hate everything they don't do. They hated Twenty20 until they won the WC, and now they hate the nicknames because they don't do it themselves.

I reckon they're great. As almost everyone has said, T20 is all about fun and drawing people to the game so there's hardly anything wrong with nicknames. If you honestly can't figure out who caught the ball or who ran out who then get one of the guides that are sold/handed out at the matches. It shouldn't take you too long to figure out who Andy G or Catfish are.

Depends on what the ICC plan to do with this format. If they would like for people to take it seriously, which is apparent from the fact that there was actually a WC for it, then they need to stick last names to make it look professional. Otherwise, I don't see a problem with them, just as long as Aussies only do it at home games.

Yes. I think it should stay. I think in the World Twenty20 I saw Dilhara Fernando called "Randhi" and Upul Tharanga called "Upul" so i don't think it shouldn't be a problem. ;)

It's just a shame that Pakistani players don't have nicknames in T20 matches. :p

It's quite easy for those people at ESPN or Indian fans to question it after they were absolutely decimated and embarrassed in the match. Anything to cry about I guess.

What rubbish ?
The ppl at ESS who were complaining about it were the Aussies- Ian Chappell to be precise.

Only problem is if your new to the game it is hard to find out who the players are. So the booklet that is available at the games are pivotal to understanding the game better. Also maybe a fielding position map in the booklet. .

Not every one will buy the booklet, will he ?

Upul Tharanga with 'Upul' is not a nickname and neihter is Dilhrara with 'Randhi' as its his middle name.

Im sure the people worried about the names have better things to do in life....

Its only one game a summer (for now)

I couldn't care less. Ian Chappell spouts a continuous stream of garbage anyway, as do many other Channel 9 commentators.

I think its not topic for arguments?what it makes difference if they write name or surname?
Or even their pet's name!..lol

Then it was Nine, not ESPN. Ian Chappell works for Channel Nine. Be more specific in the future.

So how was he in two places at once? He does commentate for Nine every summer.

All he has to do is move to the part of the ground where ESPN is commentating from. It happens, Geoffrey Boycott used to move from Channel 4 to Test Match Special constantly.

unfortuantely i must add, who cares about the surnames nicknames dog's name, it's 20/20 it's a bit of fun, next you won't won't the blokes to be miced up!
