Governers XI v South Africa update at Drinks during the first session on Day 1.

Lance Klusener won the toss and surprisingly sent the Governers XI in on a Dusty pitch in Sunny, Humid conditions. The Governers XI lost an early wicket but scored quickly throughout the first hours play. Shadab Kabir was taken brilliantly by a diving Hall at 4th slip as he edged a back foot cover drive to a ball angled across him from Terbrugge. Faisal Athar edged a ball from an unlucky Ntini wide of 4th slip for four when he played a defensive shot to a ball of almost yorker length. Both Faisal Athar and Faisal Iqbal were almost caught at deep backward square from leg side slogs but apart from that there was little joy for the South Africans. Faisal Athar hit a number of balls to the cover fence with his favoured cover drive and brought up his half century off 40 balls with a pull shot for four off Ntini. Faisal Iqbal belted a couple of sixes over midwicket during an expensive over from Terbrugge but looked less fluent through the offside.

Governers XI 93-1 (14 overs) Extras 1

Faisal Athar 51* (40 balls) 8 fours
Faisal Iqbal 36* (36 balls) 1 four 2 sixes

Shadab Kabir c Hall b Terbrugge 5 (8 balls) 25/1

M.Ntini 7-0-44-0
D.Terbrugge 5-0-44-1
D.Crookes 2-0-5-0

Governers XI v South Africa - Lunch Day 1

The South African spinners have slowed the scoring but the Governers XI are in a commanding position at lunch. Crookes created a couple of chances with both batsman top edging sweep shots just short of in fielders, he also had a big shout for an lbw that looked out but was turned down by the umpire. The South Africans have been a little unlucky and will not have given up hope even though they have taken a pounding. Faisal Iqbal brought up his 50 off 45 balls and he and Faisal Athar have extended their 2nd wicket partnership to 139 at the break. South Africa will be hoping the Test pitches have more to offer for the quick bowlers because this pitch has given them little to no assistance. Ntini has struggled after a poor tour of Sri Lanka and will be cursing his luck after the edge off his bowling that flew wide of the slips early on.

Governers XI 164-1 (30 overs) Extras 2

Faisal Athar 83* (89 balls) 14 fours
Faisal Iqbal 74* (83 balls) 7 fours 2 sixes

M.Ntini 11-0-72-0
D.Terbrugge 5-0-44-1
D.Crookes 10-1-36-0
P.Strydom 4-1-11-0

Governers XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 2, Day 1

The South Africans picked up a couple of wickets after the lunch break to boost their flagging spirits. Faisal Iqbal top edged a sweep to a flighted delivery from Strydom and lobbed an easy catch to Terbrugge at short fine leg. Faisal Athar brought up his hundred off 103 balls and was looking to hit out on the leg side before getting a fine edge to the keeper when he played a cover drive at the previously innocuous Hall. Strydom bowled an excellent line and length to stifle the batsmen for a long period before he lost concentration and conceded 17 in an over to Hasan Raza and Asim Kamal. Ntini was brought back on to bowl with two fresh batsmen at the crease but his luckless run continued as he overstepped first ball and was hit for four.

Governers XI 247-3 (44 overs) Extras 4

Governers XI v South Africa - Tea Day 1

There was no respite for the South Africans as the Governers XI continued to pile on the runs, the only moment of joy being the dismissal of Hasan Raza, bowled off stump attempting a cover drive at a ball too close to him from Hall. Asim Kamal struck the first 8 balls he faced for 4 as Strydom lost his line and length (or maybe his marbles) and continually pitched too short and straight. After concededing just 22 runs from his first 10 overs, Strydom was plundered for 54 from his next 3 including 6 consecutive fours in one over to Asim Kamal. Asim Kamal reached his 50 off just 28 balls as he made a mess of Strydom's figures, most of his runs coming from glances off his hip. Earlier Hasan Raza had reached his 50 off a more sedate 56 balls. There were a few top edges and airy shots played but none went to hand. Hall came back impressively during the session after at one stage having the figures of 5.5-0-48-0.

Governers XI 339-4 (59 overs) Extras 5

Asim Kamal 67* (54 balls) 14 fours
Shoaib Malik 13* (17 balls) 3 fours

Hasan Raza b Hall 60 (68 balls) 9 fours 308-4

M.Ntini 12-0-79-0
D.Terbrugge 5-0-44-1
D.Crookes 12-1-46-0
P.Strydom 19-5-99-1

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, they put a smile on my face. In case you are wondering why the overs have been fairly evenly spread amongst the bowlers its because i save my game after every over and if the AI makes a change i dont like i replay the last over until it brings on the bowler i want. This method is a little slow but it makes for a good game of cricket.

Governers XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 3, Day 1.

The Governers XI lost the wicket of Asim Kamal in the first over after Tea when he tried to sweep and was deceived by a quicker arm ball from Crookes and fell lbw. Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal have added some quick runs since then and it seems a total of 500+ is on the cards with allrounder Yasir Arafat still to come. Klusener finally brought himself on to bowl when the score reached 400 but he has struggled to make an impact. Shadab Kabir must be kicking himself for not playing himself in before trying to play the cover drive, which is always risky against the new ball, because he is the only batsman to miss out so far on a belter of a wicket against a second string attack. There is plenty of time left in the match for a result so the Governers XI will probably continue to bat on until either or both Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal have reached their centuries. Shoaib Malik brought up his 50 off 57 balls, the slowest half century of the innings but is growing in confidence and now starting to strike the ball nicely through the offside.

Governers XI 433-5 (73 overs) Extras 9

Shoaib Malik 60* (62 balls) 11 fours
Kamran Akmal 41* (35 balls) 7 fours

Asim Kamal lbw Crookes 69 (58 balls) 14 fours 343-5

M.Ntini 12-0-79-0

Governers XI v South Africa - Stumps Day 1

The Governers XI lost two wickets in an over by Klusener leaving Shoaib Malik requiring 23 runs to bring up his century with only the tail for support. Kamran Akmal brought up his 50 off 45 balls before playing too early at the very next ball and spooning an easy catch to McKenzie at cover. Yasir Arafat came in and after driving a four through the covers was out next ball trying to repeat the shot as he edged the ball to a diving Hall at 4th slip who took his second excellent catch of the day to go with his two wickets. Shoaib Malik edged an attempted cover drive on 77 past a diving Pothas who just managed to get a glove on the ball before it raced to the fence for 4. Danish Kaneria wisely left the ball alone outside off stump as he saw Shoaib Malik to a well deserved century off 101 balls. The batsmen then began to look for quick runs with a number of lofted shots but neither of them really middled the ball when going for the big hit. The Governers XI brought up 500 runs for the day just after Shoaib Malik reached his century and they may opt to go for some quick runs in the morning session on Day 2 to put further pressure on a weakened South African batting line up. The only comfort for the South Africans is that, apart from Klusener who was the most successful bowler during the day, only one member of the bowling line up for this match will play in the first Test, so their Test attack should be fairly fresh and unscarred from what has been a very tiring and dissappointing day for the bowlers.

Governers XI 516-7 (88 overs) 12 Extras

Shoaib Malik 111* (110 balls) 18 fours
Danish Kaneria 14* (28 balls) 1 four

Governors XI v South Africa - 11.29 am, Day 2

The Governors XI have been dismissed for 542 as Crookes snapped up 3 wickets in two overs with his off spin. Danish Kaneria was stumped as he advanced down the wicket attempting to hit a six down the ground, Shoaib Malik was bowled attempting the same shot and finally, Fazl-e-Akbar failed to get hold of a slog sweep and lobbed a simple catch to Bruyns at short fine leg. Crookes finished with 4 wickets after being the most economical and hard working bowler throughout the innings. Six of the Governors XI top 7 batsmen passed the half century mark with two going on to score centuries as the overall run rate hovered around 6 an over for most of the innings. The South Africans will be hoping their batsmen can dig in and gain some much needed batting practice on what still looks to be a good pitch.

Governors XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 1, Day 2

The South Africans woes in this match continue as they lost two early wickets, both to seam bowler Fazl-e-Akbar. Bacher flicked a leg cutter straight to Danish Kaneria at square leg in the second over and then McKenzie, who failed miserably in the unfamiliar opening position in Sri Lanka, continued his poor form by hooking a pinpoint bouncer to the same fielder. Fazl-e-Akbar lacks the outswinger that Shabbir Ahmed and Yasir Arafat possess but he can move the ball off the seam both ways and is proving to be a handful. Yasir Arafat is warming up and will bowl the first over after the drinks break.

South Africa 38-2 (8 overs) Extras 2

M.Bruyns 18* (22 balls)
B.Dippenaar 7* (10 balls)

A.Bacher c Danish Kaneria b Fazl-e-Akbar 4 (6 balls) 9-1

Governors XI v South Africa - Lunch Day 2

The South Africans suffered a dreadful collapse against the new ball as they slumped to 53-5 before Klusener and Pothas stopped the rot with a patient partnership. At Lunch they are still a massive 458 runs behind with only 5 wickets in hand. The damage was done by Fazl-e-Akbar and Yasir Arafat with their contrasting styles. Dippenaar looked comfortable until flicking an outswinger to square leg, Bruyns followed after he had looked to be getting his eye in before he was decieved by a slower ball and hit one to the same fielder and then Hall was out second ball clipping a leg cutter to Danish Kaneria, who held 5 catches at square leg and now has a chance of entering the record books for the most catches by a fielder other than a wicketkeeper in a first class innings. Klusener top edged a couple of sweeps off Kaneria's leg spin but they landed well clear of any fielders. Pothas looked composed and it will be up to these two and next man in, Strydom, if the South Africans are to post a respectable total. South Africa seem almost certain to lose this match and have badly missed Gibbs and Kallis at the top of the order, not to mention the bowling of Pollock, Hayward and Boje.

South Africa 84-5 (22 overs) Extras 2

L.Klusener 17* (26 balls)
N.Pothas 17* (31 balls)

B.Dippenaar c Danish Kaneria b Yasir Arafat 11 (15 balls) 47-3

Governors XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 2, Day 2

Klusener and Pothas put on a partnership of 74 for the 6th wicket together to add some respectibility to the South African score before the spinners grabbed a couple of wickets. Pothas cut a four off a wayward short ball from Fazl-e-Akbar who conceded 19 in his two overs after lunch before driving a Shabbir Ahmed outswinger to the cover boundary and then lofting a straight six from an attempted yorker from Fazl-e-Akbar in the next over. Klusener hit a six over cover off Danish Kaneria and things were starting to look better for the tourists. Pothas then undid the good work by holing out to Yasir Arafat at deep cover off the bowling of Shoaib Malik. Strydom lasted just 4 balls as he glanced Danish Kaneria off his hip for a boundary and then next ball chipped the ball to short leg Shadab Kabir who held an excellent reflex catch off the full face of the bat. Crookes was nearly bowled a couple of times playing inside the line to Shoaib Malik's off breaks but is offering some support to Klusener who has gone back into his shell apart from the odd sweep shot. The Governers XI have put down a number of catches which has helped the South Africans recover slightly. With 2 and a half days to go the South Africans seemingly have no hope of saving this game as the pitch is only going to get worse from here. Kluseners decision to bowl first is now looking foolish in the extreme.

South Africa 143-7 (36 overs) Extras 4

L.Klusener 37* (72 balls) 1 six
D.Crookes 6* (12 balls)

N.Pothas c Yasir Arafat b Shoaib Malik 42 (53 balls) 2 fours 1 six
P.Strydom c Shadab Kabir b Danish Kaneria 6 (4 balls) 1 four

Shabbir Ahmed 8-0-31-0
Fazl-e-Akbar 9-0-51-3
Yasir Arafat 7-0-20-2
Danish Kaneria 7-0-27-1
Shoaib Malik 5-0-13-1
