I think Stuart Pearce's idea to have a shoot out after the match last night was a great idea and should be adopted by the senior team after all friendlies, especially if England have just lost. The fans should be actively encouraged to treat England as the away team during the shootout (apart from when they score of course.) This will eventually lead to penalties being greeted as an old friend (like the Germans do) instead of being dreaded when they happen for real.

Match was England U21 v Slovakia U21 (5-0 to England)

So, who agrees?

I don't see the point to be honest. It'll be no different to having penalty practice in training.

You won't have pressure after the friendly either. How is it a pressure situation when the shoot-out has no outcome on the match which has already been decided?

You still want to win though. It's a match situation with 80,000 fans around (Wembley), a lot of difference to a training situation with your team mates watching. The experience of taking penalties in front of thousands of fans, could surely be crucial.

Surely if the fans get on their back during the shootout, that'll make it a totally different prospect to taking penalties in training. I think it should definitely be given a trial, as the senior teams' penalty taking skills leave an awful lot to be desired and if it wasn't for these damn shootouts, we probably would've won at least two more trophies: Italia 1990 (Argentina were **** in the final and we were much better than Germany in the semis) and Euro '96 (England v Czech Republic in a final at Wembley??? Come on!)

Correct. It is the pressure of taking penalties in front of 80,000 fans that England need to get used to. And taking penalties after a loss in any match (even a friendly) would be tough, maybe tougher than a competitive shootout, as in that, you still have something to play for. Whereas if you've just lost a friendly, you might be somewhat down, so if you can take penalties when in that frame of mind, how will you be when you're up for it?

any target practice for england is good so why not. gives the fans more the players get something out of it. seems a win win situation. also might encourage more audacious penalties :).

The pressure will come from wanting to succeed in front of the fans and TV cameras...

Why would you want more penalty shoot-outs involving England? Have we not suffered enough?

That's the whole point! If we're more used to taking the damned things, then when it is for real, we'll have a better chance, thus avoiding more suffering and 40/50/60/ however many more years of hurt! That or sneak the U21 boys on for the shootout. Those guys take great penalties!
