Your Cricket Powderwombat's Bowling Coaching Thread

I bowl a bit of leg-spin as well when i try to bowl a googly sometimes i bowl it right sometimes it goes very wide of right hand batsman and the top-spinner goes very high for some odd reason as when i bowl a leggie it goes quite slow and low but i use a lot varation and my mate says he can't picked them but they seem so harmless so is there a way the varation can be more dangerous.

Sorry for the long post :p

just wondering what level coach you are and what standard or teams you coach?
Well Im a young coach, Im 18, so I'm still developing.

And I am a qualified level 1 coach. Also I am currently coaching a junior team to get some experience to go for level 2.

And I am up to date on all the latest coaching methods for cricket so dont worry about that.

To Dr Pepper - If you are getting enough turn, that is a good way to go about it, but some spinners dont turn it a lot, so if they do what you do they will go for easy runs. Also height on leg spin is very useful, it makes it a lot harder to play.

To Ayub - As a spinner you should develop your stock ball, which in your case is a leg spinner, until you can land it on the spot all the time. That is your bread and butter ball and you should be bowling that delivery 90 times out of 100.

Variation is most useful if used sparingly, so if you bowl 3 overs at one batsman, all leg spin, then slip in a top spinner or a googly, it will hit him by surprise, and if its a good ball, you have a good chance of getting him out.

Not only that, but as a bowler its a lot easier to bowl the same sort of delivery over and over instead of slightly changing your release, wrist position, and line every ball.

I know as a fast bowler its a lot easier for me to just keep bowling outswingers starting on leg stump and swinging away, than it is to bowl one outswinger, then change the seam position, wrist position, and slightly change my action and start it wide of off stump to swing it back in.

But think about this - if you were a selector and you had a leg spin bowler who could bowl on a scale of 1-10 -

Leg spin: 5/10

Variation delivery: 5/10

Or would you pick the leg spin bowler who could bowl great leg spin deliveries every ball(10/10), but didnt have a variation.

I would definately pick the one who could bowl leg spin better, because thats the ball he should be bowling 90 times out of 100, and it will get most of his wickets.

I've always wanted to be able to have both a googly and a legreak completely under my control, and use them both equally, and then toss in a topspinner or backspinner as variation. That should be fine, right?

yes thats very possible, just be careful not to bowl in a pattern, for example dont do - 2 leg breaks, 2 wrong uns, 2 leg breaks, 2 wrong uns.

But as I said before that will be harder than just having a stock ball and getting into a rhythm with line and length. But if you can do it well, and not have any noticeable change in your action with the 2 different deliveries, it will be very lethal.

I know a bowler who can swing it both ways, but the change in his action is so noticeable, I can tell before he has released the ball which way the ball will swing, which completely takes the element of surprise away from the delivery, which is what you need with your variation ball.

Also don't underestimate the power of the straight ball, especially with leg spin. If you pitch it on middle stump, and the batsman can't read it out of your hand(not many can until you get into the high standards aka the level below state cricket) they will expect it to turn away from them, and you will get lots and lots of LBWs.

I don't want to sound big headed but a do get a fair bit of spin on it so thanks Mr. Wombat :).

My question to powderwombat please give me some aussie fitness tips
ok, and btw guys just call me wombat or powder lol.

For fitness, cardio more specifically there are a lot of viable options, some more practical for some people than others.

Walking or jogging is great, you cannot go wrong with either of them, and try and combine them, so for example, jog until you cannot jog anymore(pushing your limits) then walk until you fully get your breath back and are ready to jog again. I wouldn't advise this a day before a match though, as it can leave you sore the next day.

If you have a gym membership, they have lots of machines that improve fitness - rowing machines, elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills. Treadmills aren't as "good" for lack of a better term(its late) because its different than ground running, and it doesn't require as much effort. Hard to explain but its because the treadmill makes you kind of run on the spot, instead of pushing forward, it definately requires less effort.

Also jumping rope is excellent and the next cheapest thing to walking.

pwbt, I am a RMF/FM bowler, side on. I am very comfortable with keeping a smooth, rhythmic action, and can bowl a nice out-swinger. I would like to be able to bowl a good in-swinger too, but cannot bowl one that gets either accuracy or seam position right. How should I go about getting it working, in particular to get the ball consistantly rotating at that 5-10 degrees "the wrong way" towards leg rather than off?

Swing bowling is all about the release. For inswing bowling, you should angle the seam to the right, for example, instead of holding the seam perfectly up and down, you should angle it down the leg side

like that.

You also have to angle your wrist, its basically the polar opposite of bowling outswing. for outswing your hand should be angled towards the slips, for inswing your hand should be angled towards fine leg.

Then the release, just follow your fingers all the way down the seam, someone taught me to think of it as a paintbrush motion, you sort of follow the seam all the way, you dont want to cut your fingers across the ball like some people do.

But yea, since you're a side on bowler it might be hard for you to get inswing, but if you change your grip and angle of your wrist it should work.

I have a gym in my own house so thanks for the advice Mr.Wombat I would refer to you for any help needed
