Ya I had the same problem here's a possible solution.
Go to properties of My Computer and make sure it is Windows Xp Home/Pro Service Pack 2
now reboot your PC at the loading screen If you are able to see Windows Xp Pro/Home then definetly you have upgraded frm SP1 to SP2 due to which the problem may occur.
The Solution is format your PC and install latest Windows XP (with new CD of windows) Home/Pro and if you see only Windows Xp at startup mostly your problem is solved. It worked for me .
