Okay so I did a complete format today (wiped the hard drive clean etc etc) Installed windows yadda yadda yadda. But I face the same problem which gets me everything.

Sound drivers, they just won't work. Usually I go onto the realtek webby download the ones for xp (32bit) and bang it works. But today I've downloaded everything tried everything what not. Just will not work. Been in my device manager etc, can't find anything.

The thing is the drivers install but no sound comes out. Also when I go to uninstall the broken driver it says faliure to uninstall....but uninstalls anyway lol?

So ya, I have an asus P5K-SE mobo which supports realtek drivers...just not today, any help appreciated ty!

Driver Sweeper beta 2.0.0 download from Guru3D.com
You can use this small utility to remove leftover traces of a driver after uninstall.

Problems with the Realtek sound driver are surprising, it is probably the most common device and Windows should be able to install automatically it with ease. Still sometimes the Windows drivers are not what you want. You can pull all the latest ASUS drivers for your motherboard here:

It could also be a hardware problem. That could be a simple as the speaker not being plugged into the green jack, but I'm more thinking along the lines of it being disabled in BIOS. It sounds unlikely, because when this is the case, Windows shouldn't be able to find it and install drivers for it. However, if you're installing the drivers manually and having that problem, then it becomes more likely.

Thanks for the reply btw. I've done all the checks (checking bios, hardware all connected because before I installed it was fine) its all working and enabled. It did this last time I did a reformat too had the exact same problem except was able to fix it quicker :D

I've done driver sweeper so hopefully it works after I install from that link. Thanks again.

EDIT: I'm getting an midway through installation saying "RealtekHD Audio Driver Install Failed" any ideas? :(

Have you got a separate soundcard as well as onboard sound? If so, you need to disable onboard, otherwise they will conflict with each other.

Nah it's onboard only not other soundcard. Anyway I did another complete reformat (I was out the night so thought might aswell) and all of a sudden the disc that the pc makers gave me for my drivers worked. Whereas usually it installs and then says the updates aren't completed :/.

Thanks for the help, and just one question is there any GOOD free anti virus that is completely free not like some 60 day trial. Thanks!

Try Avast or AVG Anti-Virus. Both have free editions and are pretty good.

If you use AVG turn off the daily scanning though in the AVG task scheduler, can really slow your PC down with it running a full scan in the background every day.

I was expecting to see either of them two. I think I had avast before but not the free edition. Thanks for the help again!
