Australia at the same stage were 85/1 only difference being that they lost the wicket of Gilchrist while South Africa have not. Both the opening batsmen have settled themselves and are now playing with good confidence. Skipper Greame smith is on 44 while fellow opener A.B DeVilliers is on 34*.

Brett Lee

South Africa started off in great fashion gathering 26 runs of the first four overs courtesy some explosive batting by the openers agaist the pace of Brett Lee. Lee was hammered for 12 runs from his opening over while he conceeded 8 runs from his seconed overbut as the match progressed both McGrath and Lee settled on a better line and length to bring the run rate down a little. After 5 overs from lee , Pointing introduced Clarke as first change bowler while in the next over he tossed the ball upto Cullen who replaced McGrath from other end of Clarke. Clarke and Cullen bowled a decent line and have kept the runs limited until now.

Strong Position

Southy Africa have reached a fairly strong position drom where victory is very much a possibility for them. South Africa have reached 197/2 after the end of fourty overs needing more 47 runs off the final ten overs. Captain Greame Smith has played a very vital role in ensuring that he stays till the end of the innings and has also formed the backbone of the south african innings. He has now reached a personal score of 98 runs and is currently playing along with veteran Herschile Gibbs.

Greame Smith 98*

Resuming on 83/0 after the end of twenty overs, South african openers continude thier gameplay plan by staying at the wicket and putting the odd delivery to the fence thereby ensuring that the run rate never climbed too much. They both were looking in ominous touch and had no problems with the Australian bowling attack. Howvere A.B. DeVilliers was out when he top edged a sweep to Watson off the bowling of Cullen and thus lost his wicket for a well made 51 leaving South Africa at 116/1. Kallis came in and after a few deliveries he too got into the act and got runs with ease.Mean while at the onther end Greame Smith looked to only take singles at this stage and rotate the strike. He was playing like a pro and knew exactly what he was doing and keeping South Africa in complete control of the innings. ricky Pointing didn't know what to do as he shuffled the bowlers like a bunch of cards from Watson to Cullen to M.Clarke but fibally he got a wicket when McGrath was Brought back. Kallis Departed for a well made 26 and thus Gibbs came on to take guard. At the moment South Africa are at the gate of victory but Australia believe that a copule of wickets can still win them the game especially when scoring for the new batsmen isn't easy.

Greame Smith 124*(136)

South africa have won the match agaist Australia and will proceed to the SuperEights with lots of confidence as well as points. They reached the target in the 48th over with Captain and Centurion Smith hitting a huge six to propel his side to victory. A match winning effort of Smith helped south africa in lot of ways and Smith himself reami9ned unbeaten on 124 runs which came off just 136 deliveries and included 11 boundaries and 2 sixes. He was well supported by DeVilliers as well as other batsmen but it was Smith's innings copuled with Peterson's hat trick that got the Proteas to this result. The Australians tried thier best with the bat as well as with the bowl but just couldn't match thier opponents today.South Africa had a few hick ups on thier route to victory when they lost Gibbs as well as Prince but Smith ensured that he stayed till the end and the team reached home with 11 balls to spare.
