We were in deep trouble now and Jimmy Kirtley and I needed to save the innings. I was starting to find my feet and was playing some nice shots but I just couldn’t find the middle of the bat. And it didn’t help that the bowlers were bowling an off stump line every ball, it was the last ball of the over and I failed to get a single so Jimmy was on strike he went to leave it and suddenly it jagged back and caught him on the pads and he was out!

I was stunned because now I could feel the weight of the world on my shoulders and I really needed to pull something out of the bag, and I did I played some nice shots but one of the them was a fabulous cover drive off of Saggers and it was probably the best shot I had ever played. At the end of the over I came down to have a word with Naved.

“We just need to survive until tea so I will keep the strike and you try and block near enough everything out.”

We punched gloves and walked back to our positions; the next ball I got was short and roared up off the seam and hit me straight in the helmet. I was fuming but I remembered what my under 13’s coach told me to do, instead of words use your bat. But I was really shaken up and didn’t want to face the next ball.

Naved was then caught at point to a simple catch and now we were nine down. Lewry and I just need to survive until tea and we would be ok. I was starting to find my form and hit some beautiful shots including on lovely hook for four.

We somehow managed to reach tea without losing another wicket and I was very pleased with my performance so far, and hopefully Lewry and I can build the score up to around 200-220.
