Incidentally, if anyone can tell me what setting I can adjust to stop them cover driving dead straight balls, please let me know. Very frustrating. It's meant to be a test match!!!

Yes what are the ballstump, ballbatsman and balllength settings for your cover drive attack and def files ?

BallStumps 1
BallBatsman 0
BallLength 2

for all 3 cover drive shots.

I understand these are "ball missing off stump", "batsman to leg side of ball", "ball pitched up"

Hayden appeared from lunch in 1-day mode, belting 3 fours over mid on. Neither Gillespie, Warne or McGrath put up much resistance. Hayden carried his bat finishing on 60, and Australia falling just short of the century mark, being all out for 99.

A good day to be a seam bowler, although Freddie just couldn't quite get it right today.

Good bowling there by England. Simon Jones, Hoggard and Harmison among the wickets, and Freddie surprisingly, not!.

Maybe it was one of those days when we did not need that bit of magic from the big lad.

Come on you England!!

Everyone's entitled to an off day - especially when the others are performing well. Certainly the pure quicks - Harmison / Jones looked more threatening than the fast mediums - Hoggard / Flintoff.

I had to take Freddie off after that wide as I couldn't stop laughing :)

England's 1st innings

The England openers are in the middle, and that is exactly where Trescothick is hit - 1st ball (if you'll pardon the pun!) I guess the pitch hasn't improved then. Tres is caught behind the stumps a couple of balls later. Rain puts paid to the rest of the day and at the close, England are 4 / 1.

The executive rules committee met at the beginning of day 2 and decided that the green pitch would remain for the duration of the morning's play. Australia celebrated and England cursed! Loudly!! Several times!!!

We've locked Geoffrey in a cupboard for a while. He would have been having fits at the England innings! With no mid on, there looked to be an easy single, but both Strauss, and then Butcher edged to the slips attempting on drives. Vaughn was sandwiched between the 2 left handers and he fell to an absolute beauty of a delivery from McGrath. This guy is still world class, and the seam movement he found in the morning session was astounding.

England wickets fell steadily throughout the morning. Thorpe has survived until lunch and is unbeaten on 24. Giles supported well with 18. Surprising decisions were the bowling of Warne for 1 over, and Lehman with 6 overs. Maybe Australia just wanted to make a game of it.

68 / 8 at lunch, and with signs that the pitch is improving slightly, maybe England can get close to the Aussie total. Here's hoping for a better batting display from here on in - at least then we can let Geoffrey out of the cupboard!

Even with the improved batting conditions, England did not survive for long after lunch. It was, however, entertaining with Harmison belting 24 in 12 balls. 5 were boundaries including 3 through the slip cordon. England have somehow managed to manufacture a lead, but with the improved pitch, you wouldn't bet against Australia setting a big target. England's seamers will need to be at their best, and Giles could well play an important role.

It sais a lot about England's batting when Thorpe and Harmison have the largest partnership of the innings. The easing pitch conditions helped, but take nothing away from the Aussie seamers - especially McGrath. 5 / 15 from 6 overs. Makes you wonder why the spinners were brought on. Please no match fixing scandals

Thank God, England scrapped through and got that lead. Now they have the advantage still. I think you play it like a test match, leaving a lot of balls and play sedately. I like the way you play and thats what makes this thread so interesting!!

COME ON ENGLAND!! BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THE AUSSIES!!

Are there are tours at the moment where the Aussies are actually beating England? :p

Presumeably something to do with the 'ball is hitting offstump therefore play...' (BallStump 2 setting)

This is where cricket 2004 is lame, the reason for this will be to low a setting on batwindowsize, any lower than 2.0 and cpu batsmen will leave, or play cover drives to straight balls increase it anymore and bowled's are virtually a thing of the past. Part of the reason i dont play this tosh anymore, roll on brian lara cricket in three months.

On a more positive note this is a great story John, keep up the good work. This brings back my memorys of when i though this game was the dogs bolloc*s :happy :cheers

I do leave a lot, and play quite defensively. Although I actually play a fair amount of attacking shots to bad balls, just that most of them are badly timed and don't go anywhere lol. Its why I struggle with the one day stuff. :D

Damn that's annoying. I think it is set to 1.4 or something. As you say, its a trade-off. I hate the way they do that "telemark ski-jump landing" thing for that cover drive. :mad Having said that, I get so few bowled and LBW that I will have to put up with it for now.

Glad you guys are enjoying the series. All this positive feedback means I've now got to keep it going. So much for my day off! :D

Lol its stupid, what i want to know is how the cpu can play this shot when its right by their toe, yet we can only play it when the ball pitches 10 fee outside off stump.

Yeah it can get pretty frustating at times.

What a difference a pitch makes! Tea on day 2 and Australia are 50 / 0 after 20 overs. Not even a hint of a false shot, and this is starting to look ominous for England. Australia could be on the brink of a very big score indeed; one which England will be hard pressed to chase. The bowlers have been able to keep the run rate low so far, but have not troubled the batsmen at all. The conditions still suit the bowlers, and England must hope for a breakthrough soon.
