This is how India became no.1 in current test ranking

India's current no.1 ranking is due to india's improved performances overseas. since 2003 india's overseas performances are improved, earlier india hardly use to win any game overseas. From 2003 India's performances are completly changed and it guided them to no.1 in current ranking.

Stats shows that India became little good only in 1967 and 1971 when they won 3 series. The rest of the period until 2003 was not good for India. India's performance results are as following before 2003 and after 2003.

Overseas Series played Before 2003:
Total: 51 series
Won: 6 series
Loss: 34 series
Draws: 11 series

Overseas Series played After 2003:
Total: 10 series
Won: 7
Loss: 3
Draws: 0

Following pictures highlight all test series played by India
yellow colour = Losses
gray colour = Draws
red colour = Wins before 2003
green colour = Wins after 2003

Okay, we get it. India are ranked #1 in test matches. Like everyone didn't know already....

But you didn't know how they become.

Nice stats. Hopefully we will see double of green lines in coming years.

Aha, got me there :D . I was just mentioning that we sorta know that India is now ranked number 1, no need to go into an in depth analysis. They've won more matches and series since 2003 and thus have won enough matches against top opposition, away and at home to earn the #1 rank. Simple. :)

Yeah, but it's nice to know exactly how they got there. This thread isn't to boast about India's achievements. It's just showing some interesting statistics.

You're missing some series' in there btw. The New Zealand one and the recently concluded Sri Lanka one. It doesn't look that flattering at the moment. Besides, India only started playing like a No.1 side when Gary Kirsten came into the fray so some statistics on that would be more indicative of how India became No.1.

India is currently on top test ranking, but India?s test ratio is only 0.74. This is 7th very low after Australia 1.79, England 1.20, Pakistan 1.13, West Indies 1.00, South Africa 0.99, and Sri-Lanka 0.86.

If you see overall results, India is on 7th position.

That shows the transition which India have come through, they struggled very badly overseas when they first came in! But now they have set up a fortress at home, although the pitches are normally roads! And they have improved their away records with teams. I mean a country with over a billion, should surely be able to produce 11 quality cricketers.

It is just simple. Relative theory ;) Indian team have obviously done more than their best in recent past especially the overseas record. The fact was, the teams which were in number 1, remained shaky in their performance in moving up & down as a result of which, Indian team moved up so easily to number 1. :p

To be honest, my ranking would be,

1) SA
2) Aus
3) Ind.

Indian team is good at present but not the best of all. :)

You ahave to be kidding me? Really Suren? Really?

That is possibly the best thing posted on here for a while, The Indian team is good, but not as great as made out to be. :clap

Yes, I was serious. ;) I never believe ICC ranking, after all it awarded Md.Yusuf as no 1 test cricketer just for his first century after comeback :p

Indian team is yet to win series in SA & Australia. They are comfortable in England. They did struggle in Windies ages back, but looking at the Windies team, I don't think that current Indian team would have any problems. They have outsmarted in kiwiland.

So if Indian team manage to win SA and Australia in their home town with dominance like how Aussies did in their visit to other nations, I will come to conclusion, " India is the best in their business! "

The one suren posted really deserves some appreciation. I agree Indian team is good atm but still they are bit inconsistent. But Ollie, you have to agree that not every one of us tries to show the team greatness. They are just few (anti planet cricket element :D. )

If/When this happens Suren I will quite happily join you in saying, India is the best in the business.

And your fielding has been terrible recently ;). I do agree, not Indiand on he tries to show such amazing biasness towards their country, there is a select few, and they do get on my nerves :sarcasm. This must be why everyone thinks I hate India, I actually love to watch India play their cricket, I watched both of the T20's and will probably watch some of the ODI's aswell. Of course England vs South Africa takes priority! I have a great respect for the Indian team, I mean Tendulkar waddaplayer. But Team India doesn't need mentioning in every thread possible, tad bit of overkill!

Even I am waiting eagerly for the India-South Africa Test series of next year. What a tour it will be! Two equally poised teams battling for the top position; really can't wait for those matches!

It would also be interesting to see how we cope up after the retirement of some monumental figures of our batting. The remaining three of the once amazing Fab Four would probably play for three more years, at the very best. After that, a huge hole would be created in our batting. Yeah, we do have some good prospects in our first-class level who might just be their ideal replacements, but it all depends on how we utilize them. Some real tough times coming ahead for us.
