Dennis Kolodin receives Work Permit

4h6uww.jpg

Russian Dennis Kolodin has been granted a work permit by the Home Office to allow him to play for Newcastle United.

The initial application for Dennis Kolodin's work permit was rejected because he had not played in 75% of Russia's internationals over the last two years.

But Newcastle, who signed a deal with Dynamo Moscow for the 26-year-old defender late in August, have now won their appeal. The Russian has been training with the Magpies since the end of August and will feature in the next premier league match against Rovers.

Delighted Magpies boss Roy Keane, among a club delegation who attended a Home Office hearing in London on Thursday, said: "This is great news."

Keane added: "I need to thank everyone behind the scenes at Newcastle for the hard work they've put in on this one. We put together a really strong case and we're delighted we've the green light and he can play for us now.

Kolodin made his debut for Russia in in 2005 and was a part of Russia's great EURO 2008 campaign but wasn't an regular starter for the qualifiers as he made just four appearances for his countries.

Kolodin said earlier this week: "To join Newcastle is a great thing for me. I have given my 100% with my previous clubs and that's what my manager saw and bought me for. I am really happy and its always a great moment for a player to play in England.

"I have Andrei(Arshavin) my Russian team-mate at Newcastle and he will help me settle out with the tactics and on-field also. I am really looking forward for my debut."

Oooh. Work Permit. I hate Work Permits, I seem to never get granted them for most of my players :(

Newcastle United 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

2sb1jph.jpg

First-half goals from Matt Derbyshire saw Blackburn Rovers inflict third defeat of the season on Newcastle United.

Striker Derbyshire headed in Gamst Pedersen's free-kick from close range to give Blackburn a deserved lead. And soon later he doubled the score and his tally when he headed home Brett Emerton's cross. Newcastle produced a spirited fightback after the break and scored through a Andrei Arshavin penalty but Nicky Butt missed a great chance to equalise.

Newcastle showed enough spirit in the second half to suggest that an upturn in fortunes could be forthcoming. The glum expressions on home fans' faces at half-time was proof enough that Newcastle were lacklustre in the first half.

Indeed, it was a surprise that Blackburn took until the 31st minute to grab the lead as the visitors had been dominant, with Benny McCarthy and the lively Pedersen causing problems. McCarthy forced Shay Given to make an early save and moments later a Stephen Warnock shot could easily have been deflected into the net.

In the 18th minute, Dennis Kolodin rescued the Magpies when he cleared McCarthy's effort off the line but a Blackburn goal seemed inevitable and, for the almost mute Newcastle fans, it came with worrying ease.

Derbyshire's darting run outwitted the defence and the English striker headed home from six yards into the bottom-right corner. The Magpies were sloppy in possession and were being overrun in midfield, and four minutes before the break Blackburn doubled their lead through Derbyshire's second goal of the match with the striker picking almost the exact same spot as earlier.

Newcastle's fans warmly applauded their team back onto the pitch for the second half and the home side repaid the support by halving the deficit within five minutes. In the 47th minute, Newcastle had a penalty appeal for what appeared to be a Brett Emerton handball turned down but, two minutes later, Samba brought down Arshavin, who had been a peripheral figure in the first half, and the Russian striker struck his penalty down the centre of goal.

Newcastle were reinvigorated and they should have equalised when Roque Santa Cruz followed up his mesmerizing run with a menacing cross but Butt, with the goal at his mercy, let the ball bounce off his knee. Blackburn, led by the midfielder Dunn, deserve praise for quelling Newcastle who, despite the best efforts of substitute Xisco and N'Zogbia, were unable to get the equaliser they perhaps deserved.

*Newcastle boss Roy Keane:
"We need to get back to basics. We haven't continued the winning run and we need to get that sorted out as soon as possible. We had some great chances in the second half with which could equalised and could have got the deserved point from the match. Lots of credit to the fans as they were behind the team even when we were 2-0 down. We are playing some good football, I feel its just matter of time that we start winning games."

*Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce:
"Also, it was a case of who got the first goal. As soon as we got the first goal I felt at ease because I knew the crowd would get on their backs. It's not the Newcastle players or manager's fault. They are trying, they are trying really, really hard and I feel sorry for them as they are very unlucky."

Brown and Ballack scoop Monthly Awards

2ewk09j.jpg

Hull City manager Phil Brown and Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack have won the manager of the month and player of the month respectively for their performances in September. Both have won this award for the first time.

Hull who were promoted to the premier league through play-offs had a good September, winning two of their three premier league games and one Carling cup match and just lost once against Arsenal.

They started of the month with a comeback 2-1 win at St James Park over Newcastle United. Then defeated Everton 1-0 at the KC Stadium and soon knocked Blackburn Rovers out of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win. Both ended the month with a 4-0 loss in the hands of Arsenal.

While Michael Ballack had an exceptional September where he scored seven goals in all competitions including a UEFA Champions League hatrick against Schalke 04. He started of the month scoring twice in Chelsea's 2-2 draw at City of Manchester Stadium.

Later scored a hatrick against Schalke 04 where Chelsea won 4-1, and scored twice against defending champions Manchester United in an entertaining 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge. Michael Ballack also had two assist to his name in the 2-1 win over Stoke City.

Everton 4 - 1 Newcastle United

16gly01.jpg

Striker Louis Saha scored a hat-trick to help Everton fight back from a goal down to beat Newcastle.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to Michael Owen whose deflected header beat Tim Howard at the near post. Midfielder Steven Pienaar equalised for Everton with a low shot from 20 yards before Saha grabbed his first with a header from Mikel Arteta's corner. Saha nodded in to make it 3-1 before he scored his third from the spot following Steven Taylor's handball.

The victory was a thoroughly deserved one for David Moyes' side who ended their run of two games without a win in emphatic fashion, while opposite number Roy Keane was left disappointed on the poor performance. It started well for Keano when Owen gave the Magpies the lead, eluding his markers to head the ball, with the aid of a deflection from Phil Neville, past Howard.

Toffees posed little threat in the first half but when they did it was often thanks to sloppy play from Newcastle. Moyes' men would have felt aggrieved they did not get the rub of the green when Neville's goalbound shot from 20 yards seemed to strike the hand of Dennis Kolodin in the area, with the Newcastle defender appearing to have also pushed Yakubu to the ground.

Everton were unlucky not to win the penalty but there were enough big cracks in Newcastle's defence to give them the belief they could it around in the second half. The home side's equaliser was not long in coming after the break when Pienaar scored his first goal this season. The South African chanced his luck from 20 yards with a drilled low shot that deflected off the calf of Fabrico Coloccini and past Shay Given.

Newcastle then imploded. Arteta, one of the under-rated players in league, delivered another great ball from a left-sided corner and found the lanky Saha, who did not need to leap to nod in his first. And they soon unwrapped their third present thanks to Three Stooges-style defending from the visitors.

Given had come off injured with a groin injury and been replaced by Steve Harper but he, like his team-mate, was not helped by his defence, who failed to clear a cross from the right and allowed Saha the simplest of chances from two yards.

And Everton's fightback was complete in the final minute of the match when they were awarded a penalty following Taylor's handball. Regular spot-kick specialist Arteta stepped aside to allow Saha to grab his first hat-trick for the club. The France forward did not let his colleague, his team or himself down by rifling the ball past Harper.

*Everton boss David Moyes:
"We had more drive and determination in the second half. Louis Saha is a real handful and a super player and was outstanding and also scored a hat-trick. I have got more confidence in the players than they have in themselves but it is getting there with time."

*Newcastle boss Roy Keane:
"We played very well early on for a team that has not been having results go for us and we built the platform for a victory by taking the lead. Sadly half the second half came and I'm baffled by what happened because it was the same players but we never really got going after the break. Their first goal was a hammer blow and our goalkeeper got injured at the same time and when they got their second we had a mountain to climb."
