Stuttgart, now under Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni, has high expectations this season, and the fans are particularly excited about doing well in the Champions League. Trapattoni has targeted a semi final place for the club, which by no means is going to be easy for him and the club.
Stuttgart have lost two of their most influential players from last season, prolific striker Kevin Kuranyi who joined last season's runner-up Schalke 04, and midfielder Alexander Hleb who has move to English side Arsenal FC. Stuttgart have signed three players however in the summer. Attacking midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger from Aston Villa(England), defender Robert Huth from Chelsea(England) and winger Kan Sid from Bits Dubai(UAE).

Liverpool, under Spanish coach Rafa Benitez has made some big signings. Fernando Morientes is now eligible to play for the Reds in Europe. Former Villarreal goalkeeper Jose Reina, Valencia's Mohammad Sissoko and Middlesbrough and Dutch winger Boudewijn Zenden are some of the big names in the Reds squad this season. Captain Steven Gerrard has renewed his contract with the club, and he has been instrumental in the two wins so far in this season's campaign.

Steven Gerrard has scored 5 while Fernando Morientes has scored 3 goals for the Reds so far in those two qualifying rounds.

2nd QRound:
1st Leg - Liverpool 2-1 Brondby
2nd Leg - Brondby 1-2 Liverpool
Liverpool win 4-2 on aggregate

1st QRound:
1st Leg - Liverpool 3-0 TNS
2nd Leg - TNS 0-6 Liverpool
Liverpool win 9-0 on aggregate

Exciting match now, Baros should be introduced as with drawn striker in the place of Kewell.

I think the scoreline pretty much reflects the truth at half time. Though we started well, dominated possession and made the early chances, Liverpool came back well later and put in some good long balls.
Their plan seems to be attacking on the counter, but our defenders have so far done a good job to check Morientes and Cisse. However new signing Robert Huth went a bit too far in stopping a charging Morientes, and conceded a free kick to Liverpool at a very dangerous position. Gerrard then scored from the resulting free kick. This after we took the lead through Horst Heldt.
Our best player in this half was Christian Tiffert, while Steven Gerrard was easily the star performer for Rafa Benitez's side.

Stay tuned to this thread for action from the second half of this first leg match between Vfb Stuttgart and Liverpool FC.

Half Time Score: Vfb Stuttgart 1-1 Liverpool FC

43 - Steven Gerrard (LIV)
