Vaughan fit in three weeks

Why? Him playing is a gain for us.

Well that's a stupid comment. He is only the captain that beat you in the last Ashes. Captaincy is an art, and he is also a geat batsmen. Didn't fire constantly during the last Ashes, but is more than capable. You Aussies sure do forget things fast. Like the way he batted in your country last time?

Haha, great batsman? Averaged about 35 since his one decent tour over here, 32 in the last Ashes which consisted of about 9 failures and a hundred- horribly inconsistent and doesn't score anything near enough runs. Feel free to delude yourself that his decent captaincy covers his inadequacies as a batsman, all the better for the chances of whoever your opposition is.

I'm not deluding myself at all Brad. If we win the Ashes but Vaughan only averages 30 odd, do you think I am going to care about his average?

Having him in the side will make us stronger. I think it's the Australians who are deluding themselves by thinking it makes us weaker.

One thing to bare in mind about Vaughan is he is very strong on true bouncy pitches. It's why he was such a sucess in Australia last time, and the only pitch he hit a 100 on in the England ashes was fairly true. When the ball keeps a little low he can get caught on the back foot, but when he can rely on the pitch to bounce consistently, he suddenly looks a different player. Out come the swivel pulls when it's on a length, and when it's pitched up he starts to drive the ball beautifully.

No, but I do remember his complete lack of form before his injury. When was the last time he actually made runs?

Old Trafford against you guys, he scored 166. Trent Bridge against the same opposition, he scored 59. The Oval against the same opposition, he scored 45. I'd say that was the last time he got runs, and it was also the last time he was injury free.

Shame, his batting started to slump once he got captaincy. I didn't see much of him after the 2002/03 Ashes series until the South Africa series where he kept getting out in the teens & twenties. He was exceptional in the Ashes 4 years ago... He could've been one of the greats.

59 and 45? Oh no, let us run to the hills! VAUGHAN IS COMING!!

I didn't say it was special did I? I was merely answering your 'When was the last time he was on form' question. Geez.

Any player that is not 100% fit or has any decent recent form is a liabilty,
no matter what sport. I can't see how you would say he'd be a benefit
to the team. He would be of better use handing out advice from the side-line
and having that relayed back to Flintoff (if it's legal).

That was like a year ago, so it's not worth continuing a debate on those facts,
because even if he was 100% fit now, he still would have very little game time
coming in to the series, and likely very little form. Even if he is the 2nd best Captain,
it still wouldn't be evidence enough that he would be of true benefit to the squad.
I doubt he would even want to be leading the squad if he was now 100%, he's a
smart man and would know what's better for the team, afterall, this is the most
important Ashes test ENG has played for a long time and a Captain who's not in form
and had little game time is a bigger liabilty then ever before and if ENG loses he'll
end up getting more blame then he has ever got before, and we know how ruthless
(and/or stupid) the English media is.

Anyway, that's just my opinion...

ENGLAND's Ashes hopes were boosted yesterday with injured captain Michael Vaughan arriving unannounced in Australia.

The prolific batsman landed in Sydney with former England Test player Ian Botham before flying to Brisbane to join the team for the first Test, which starts on Thursday.

"I'm here to do some rehab, I can't tell you much else," Vaughan said.

I can see some conspiracy theories coming out especially with Bell in doubt but no way I can see him playing anytime soon.

I think he said the 3rd test was a possibility. If a batsman picked up an injury before or after that test, I feel they would play him ahead of Joyce.
