Andrew Flintoff's Lancashire second XI return on hold as he trains at Headingley but James Anderson backs comeback | Mail Online

Would be superb if this return becomes a reality. If he performs well enough, a career as ENG international T20 specialist is a strong possibilty en route to the 2016 W-Cup even. Fingers crossed!

YES! :cheers

This is great news! And reading from the BBC article it sounds as if he may have hopes of an England T20 career in mind when he mentions the likes of Brad Hodge still playing for Australia at the age of 39. It's going to be really interesting to see how he goes.

BTW the next televised Lancashire game is on the 6th of June so hopefully he plays in that match :yes

And the best thing about this from my (fairly selfish) perspective is that Lancashire play in the other group to Hampshire so I can watch Freddie blast his way back into cricket without thinking "how the ruddy hell are we going to chase/defend this?!"

Another win for the Spitfires, that's 2 from 2 now :)

Adam Riley once again putting in a great performance, he's one to watch for the future I reckon.

Dobell: Flintoff's comeback not a time for cynicism | Cricket News | England | ESPN Cricinfo

There is a lesson here, though. Flintoff's fame was cemented by his Man-of-the-Series winning performance in the Ashes of 2005; a series in which he bowled with pace and skill, batted with bravado and skill and showed the sort of grace in victory that portrayed the game in a flattering light.

But crucially, that Ashes series was the last shown on free to air TV in the UK. So while other players since have had periods of outstanding form, none have quite gone on to make the crossover from cricket to mainstream media personality. Flintoff's all-round excellence was one reason for his popularity and fame, but that fact that he had a larger stage and a bigger audience was also relevant.

The fear has to be that, for all the benefits of the finance pumped into the game by selling TV rights to one subscription broadcaster, it is almost impossible to replace the reach of a free to air coverage.

Yea boy apt point made by G-Dobell. Channel 4 cricket coverage for ENG home matches, especially in the 1990s growing up when Corhill Insurance was the sponsor was special.

That 2005 series to date, was the only time when almost everybody in this country was transfixed in a ENG home cricket series in a similar vein to England's football team at a world cup. And, that was all due to free-to-air TV.

Skysports owning the rights for ENG home series has killed the special vybe in the last decade.

Yeah that's how I got interested in cricket by watching the 2005 Ashes series on channel 4 :)

I disagree on your SkySports point though, I think they've done good for English cricket.

Ye don't get me wrong they have done alot of good, their broadcast deals showing all those county games helps the ECBs bank account greatly. But we all know the cost for Sky packages, most people can't afford it still i.e minority black & asian communities.

From 1990-2005, sky only had ENG overseas tours & everyone was at least able to watch home test on free-to-air.

Watching the game live on Sky now and Leicestershire's fielding has been shocking so far. They've got a decent bowling attack yet are throwing a lot of runs away.
