Watson as test opener?

One test is hardly an opportunity, Jaques failed in his first test too.

Jaques is a better batsman pure and simple, Jaques is two years younger and has 2000 more first class runs and 10 more centuries

Better is your biased NSW opinion. Rogers had a better season last year but Jaques was picked ahead of him based on past results. And regardless of who is better, the fact is that Jaques got a second opportunity and took it. Rogers is not a bad batsman, anyone who thinks that is misguided, Jaques may indeed be better but that doesn't mean that Rogers is not good enough to play test cricket.

Well if there are two better openers then yes it does.

Jaques is better than Rogers and so is Katich, Rogers would probably be third choice once Hayden retires.

Rogers is a class batsman but i have seen better batsmen not get given a run as well

Rogers had a better season last time?

Jaques had a better start but a shaky finish but Rogers probably only had a better season by about an average of 3 and Jaques has been the form play of the Domestic competition for the past 3-4 years.

I think Rogers is a better opener than Katich. I do think that Jaques is better than Rogers, but their past few years have been very even.

If you go back to 03/04ish Rogers wasn't even in the mix imo. Hes really given Jaques a scare in the last 2 or so years.

Yeah better use Watson at number three or four . Opener he wont be that effective .

No! The only room for him is opener, and hes not good enough there!

Jaques
Rogers/Katich (When Hayden retires)
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
Haddin
Lee
Clark
Casson
Hily/Bollinger/Noffke (Noffke would be at 7) /Inness

That would be my lineup.

Well mine lineup would be

Katich
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
Ronchi
Watson
Lee
Casson
Clark

I think some of you guys who are making accusations in this thread might want to read the article. The way it reads is that he has been asked about Watson being in contention for a spot as an opener in Test cricket after Hayden retires, to which his reply is:

"I don't think it can hurt, the fact that he is opening in one-day cricket. We've seen a lot of guys come through the system opening in one-day cricket and then getting an opportunity at Test match cricket. So if he can show that he's got the ability to cope with the quality bowlers with the new ball in one-day cricket over the next 12 months, whenever the opportunity arises, his hat will certainly be in the ring. In Test match cricket, we've got some big series coming up and it's going to be nice to have a quality opening batsman, who can do a really good role there, and also might have a few overs in him, and could catch at slip or can field at cover. That really does add to our mix of skills in the field."

Whether he thinks Watson can open or not, he's making the point that the position is much more than just scroing a few runs, he likes the other attributes that Watson can bring to the side. My personal opinion is that he would be a welcome addition to the side for his allround skill, his bowling has improved a great deal and the fact that he is a right hander would make for a great LH/RH opening combo with Jaques. Sure, there are better batsmen around who may probably be better run scoring options like Hodge and Rogers etc, but Watsons age would also be taken into consideration too, and add to the fact that our bowling attack might not be the strongest it's been, blooding players like Casson and Johnson at the highest level, with a few others to maybe make their debuts before the Ashes.

yer mine would be very similar theres no room for anyone else at the moment everyone deserves their spot

it could work with watson with RH/LH combo with Jaques but i prefer Katich or Hodge to open when Hayden Retires

Hodge wont open, dont think he'll play another test either, love the man tho

Nah Hodge wont open mate, Hes probably not in the top 5 openers in Australia atm so no chance. I like Katich, he might get it but hes about 3 or so years older than rogers so Rogers might get it.

Katich

Watson

We are talking about tests mate.

No offence, but that line-up is a joke.

1. Marsh is not a test quality player, no chance. To give him a spot above Jaques or Rogers or even watson for that matter is a joke.

2. Ronchi over Haddin? Ronchi doesn't even average over 30 in FC cricket and all he can do is slog. Haddin is one of the bets batsmen in Domestic cricket and the best keeper by a mile. Also, Ronchi cant play test cricket. He can slog. He cant bat.

3. You only have 2 specialist bowlers there. Lee and Clark.. you need to watch domestic cricket to know that we have players that are better bowlers then watson like Noffke (who is also just a good a batter) Bollinger, Hilfenhaus, Inness, Bracken and more.

You cant change a whole test team because of a few ODI proformances and Twenty20 efforts.

Watson doesn't have anywhere near the raw technique to make the test team as a batter, let alone opener. There are many other batsmen I would pick ahead of him for a test match. For limited overs he is a very useful player, but keep him away from Tests.

At the moment we have Haydos, Jaques with Katich as backup. This should still last a while. Then there are heaps more that could come in.
