My perspective on this whole issue is somewhat different. I honestly see no crime being committed by the ICL, the game between the two ICL and IPL is cricket politics, it will however in my mind get a bit more serious when it becomes national politics, especially in the Asian bloc, while the IPL has the backing of the BCCI and of course the ICC (they have no choice) some of the other countries that have lost cricketers to the ICL are heroes, icons in their countries, already England is feeling the squeeze of the IPL, by way of Sri Lanka not sending or rather abandoning their tour, the government of SL agreed to it, however a former icon of the game from SL, Ranatunga is saying that, no longer will players be allowed to join the IPL if there are no benefits for the SL board, and I agree with him, I mean here it is the boards from these countries, made cricketers out of these guys and the IPL is using their talents, paying them, and making money, but when come to duties for which they are contracted they can't play, or will not play and the boards stand to lose revenue. So how I see it is, sooner or later the BCCI and the IPL will have to start paying these boards, similar to what Stanford did with ECB US$3.5 million, or no longer will boards be banning their players just to satisfy the BCCI, Modi and the IPL.
And if this happen, you could see countries like Pakistan, SL, maybe even NZ, saying, wait a minute we will no longer ban players if they look to earn more money by playing in the ICL, because from what I read, the ICL in principle said that country first, if players are and would be required by their countries to play for them then they would be released, so there would not be a question of second string players trying to fill up senior teams positions because they are out playing in the ICL.
Well of course Modi is saying the SL tour to England was not part of the FTP, that is true, this was supposed to be a tour by Zim, but at the same time he Modi, is asking the ICC for a window to be created for the IPL in a plan that is already laid down till 2012, that is double standard hypocrisy if you ask me.
The long and short of it is that one way or another, sooner or later, the ICL have to be recognized, if not by simple cricket sense, then by powerful men in politics in different countries, that have the masses behind them and if they are not taken care of financially then they will bend and sway and have their best players, playing for their country again, ICL or no ICL.
Because it does not look like the ICL have anywhere going, they are growing instead, getting linked with clothing designers etc...., they are here to stay!!!
