Uthappa is not a youngster. Also, this can be seen as a brilliant opportunity to prepare for the WC. I'll remind you that a certain Yuvraj Singh made his debut in the CT!

Pant is more than ready for international cricket. Uthappa has made a mountain of runs for donkey's years now and if experience is your argument and the CT is so important then there's always Gambhir to go to! Dhawan and Rahane have both not only failed as opener's but also been guilty of sucking all the momentum out of the innings and have not done anything great to warrant selection. So while you're saying that making runs in the IPL doesn't merit selection, Dhawan and Rahane have been unable to do exactly that against the same attacks. Even if you eliminate the IPL, what is the basis for Dhawan's selection apart from his friendship with VK? Mind you, this comes from a huge VK fan!

From any point of objectivity, Rahane and Dhawan don't merit/warrant selection ahead of at least 3/4 other cricketers! I'd even say the same about R Ashwin, but @SaiSrini will get upset! Again, I'm the same guy who stood for Rahane when the useless argument between him and newly crowned triple centurion Nair was raging.

In my opinion, we have a pretty weak set of openers and our spinners will struggle to pick wickets in the middle overs including Jadeja who I'm a fan of. I also don't get the Shami selection, but hey, what do I know?
Yes. Uthappa could have been selected or even GG. But I don't think Pant should be given debut in CT. And I prefer them ahead of Dhawan. Same goes with Ashwin. Kuldeep or Chahal could have been a better option.

I don't agree with Shami though. He bowled well in tests, he bowled well in ODIs before he got injured. So, he straightaway gets a go. Whom would you rather select for Shami ?

We should definitely not go back to GG. We saw how much he struggled in the tests. Its time we look beyond him.

Rahane is just going through a bad patch. The problem with Jinx is not quality. He seems to be trying too hard to prove that he is a good LOI batsman. At his best, he would be an asset to the ODI side in England, on tracks with pace.

I'm not that much against Rahane since it's a 50 over tournament and there will time to settle down and score.

Dhawan, on the other hand, does not deserve to be in an International squad.

Shaami...should get a chsnce. Far better than the Sharmas, right?

Who would you pick ahead of Shami? If fully fit, he will be an asset with the new ball in England. In order to do well, we need to pick wickets in the CT. Shami, Bhuvi and Yadav are all wicket-takers. Spin, in my opinion, will play a strictly limiting role. Jadeja should be alright.

India will not even play 3 quicks. Their initial strategy will be 5 batters, a keeper, a batting AR, a bowling AR, a spinner and two quicks. Translation? I can guarantee this will be India's first choice team-

Dhawan
R Sharma
Kohli
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Jadhav
Pandya
Jadeja
Ashwin
B Kumar
Bumrah

If you ask me, I would have definitely picked Chahal/K Yadav for Shami. I think the Oval will take turn and the middle overs have been our weakness in the past year and a half!

Actually, I'm a fan of Rahane but he's even more underserving than Dhawan! Bottom line is neither deserves it. If I were R Uthappa, I'd be as good as devastated. He has looked absolutely unstoppable and it's not just slogs, he has always been technically sound!

For R Uthappa its 2010 all over again. One of the most unluckiest guy in world cricket .

Robin Uthappa deserved the chance. I agree, he has been constantly overlooked. Uthappa is not exactly inexperienced. He has played enough for India in the past and has that experience.

Anyways I do see Rohit and Dhawan opening for India in most games, which seems fair to me now that the squad is picked. I don't see Rahane being first choice over Dhawan purely based on their batting styles. Someone suggested Manish Pandey to open. That won't be a bad ploy but I don't see our team choosing such a move, especially when we have picked 3 openers in the side.

:yes

And I know this won't happen. Kohli and Dhawan are BFF's.
