" The debut was the weirdest, yet most brilliant debut ever."
" Ha, it was definitely something!"

The Debut
After only a few training sessions, Craig Tough was snapped up by Lancashire Cricket Club. Since then though he had moved to Lancashire and had attended their Youth Academy as a school. Life was great. His family now lived only minutes away from the Academy and he could even walk then. Training sessions were now incredibly enjoyable and Craig had made a new best mate, fellow batsmen James Edmonds. Ironic really as he somehow ended up moving next door to him, after he too got signed up by Lancashire shortly after Craig did. Going down to nets everyday after school sure was getting Craig ready for his first match for Lancashire against Warwickshire. Tom McDougall had recovered by now and some reason felt threatened by Craig's presence and Craig started helping people with their techniques. McDougall sent Craig to Mr.Taggart, the head coach at Lancashire. Well McDougall told Taggart, as everyone usually does, laughed at him. They also introduced a new coach, Richard Duffy. This blonde bad boy was an ex convict but had already got all his coaching badges needed in the few years he had been out of jail. He took a shining to Craig and helped him vary his line. However, this is all well and good but would it work in a match? Lancashire U10's had a match coming up against Warwickshire U10's, and finally the team sheet was up on the notice board. Incredibly, Craig was picked. So was his best buddy James. Craig would be opening the bowling with Virender Utcheka whilst James would be coming in at 4. The only reason that James was picked was because we were missing two batsmen, I think. One was out due to the broken leg a few sessions ago and one was because he was grounded. Oh the irony! They were missing one bowler also, Francis Dyke, he ate a concur. What luck?! Only days before the date on the team sheet Craig soon went into rapid training and if it wasn't for Richard Duffy back in prison, he probably could of prepared a little better for the match in hand. Phsyio and mentalist Jack Teague was now taking training whilst Richard Duffy was "away". With fitness and fielding orientated work, they were obviously ready for the first match.
" Remember lads. If you score more runs, you win the match!" were just some of the immortal words said by McDougall moments before the match. Craig, whom had never played for county before was loving every aspect of it, even just thinking about it. James on the other hand, knew what to expect but he had never played on the caliber of this quality. Toss was won by Captain of Lancashire Doris Gort and on a seamers overcast pitch, he decided to bowl. James would be fielding as a slip today. Craig watched on as in the first over pace man Utcheka got smacked for six runs. It was Craig's first over for Lancashire, it ended up going for an econominal 2 runs although every ball pitched in the right place. Utcheka soon got the breakthrough dismissing Sinclair. Overs later and they found themselves 2 down as Utcheka got a second. Next would be a milestone for Craig, his first wicket. "HOWZAT!" Craig bowled a full ball on his feet and the batsman Harry McCard edged it through to the keeper... and it was given! Craig soon got another wicket as he clean bowled Dizlack for 36 with a beautiful in swinging yorker which seems to be his speciality at the moment. Whitman got 2 wickets from the middle order, both important wickets whilst Utcheka got another wicket. James had to take a stunning diving catch to take one of the wickets for Whitman and it seemed he winked just before he caught as if to pose for the camera. Sunny then came in and dismantled the batting order, getting the tail enders leaving them only to get one wicket. Guess who got the last wicket? None other than our man, Craig Tough. A slow ball was played all around by the batsmen and it knocked the bails of the middle stump. Great Variation of bowling by Craig. That was it. A great bowling performance by the lads to get Warwickshire out for a collective score of 182 from 37 overs, a little expensive but surely chase able. Craig bowled terrifically getting 3-32 and James caught the only chance he had, so all in all a great performance by our boys.
The innings started dreadfully as Samuel Vort, the wicket keeper, went for 1 run after only facing 8 deliveries. A great catch to dismiss him. Jack Benning was now in and James was scheduled to go in after Jack. Jack soon got out after a dubious run out decision, which looked in. This was the start of a beautiful partnership though as James was padded up with his new batting equipment and looked the part. As he walked out onto the pitch the opponents clapped him on like most teams do. He hit the bowler for a four on the first ball, an after that he sped away. Daniel Gort, the captain, soon brought up his 50 in style with a beautiful cover drive going for 3 runs. A brilliant innings. As Daniel neared the 80's, James soon got his 50 with a simple single after a very quick start to his innings. Unfortunately, every brave stance has to come to an end and a great Captain's knock it was, gone for 81. Two wickets in two balls! Ethaniel came in next and got straight out that ball. Daniel Bucket then came and went for 4 runs, unfortunately he got caught but nearly dropped. Earlier in the day McDougall told James these exact words " Dancing feet my boy, dancing feet. Just watch me DANCE!" and this was obviously tormenting him as... he got out. Credit to the bowler Gibson, as he had been bowling quite well and the ball before he got hit for six off James but unfortunately, so close to the end of the innings, James got an inside edge onto his wicket. Tough luck. With the score on 181/6, they only needed two runs to win the match. Would of taken something special for them to win the game but they sure had a go, getting Sunny out for 2. It was now Craig's turn to come in and bat, at number 9 and guess what he did? He hit him for a four to win the match! An emphatic victory all in all, made all the better by the brilliant performances by James and Craig.
What a debut!? James batted superbly in his innings, even Craig shone with a beautifully timed cover drive to win the match. Craig was dominant with the ball, which is obvious with the 3 wickets he picked up and James didn't drop his catch and stopped the majority of runs as slip. The team revolved around these two, the captain and the bowlers. The batsmen were poor but that can sometimes be expected with 2 batsmen missing. After the game the man of the match was given and there were no surprises as it went to captain Doris Gort. James and Craig had started their career for Lancashire but would they be bale to stay up with the pace and play at the same quality as the other lads? Only time would tell.
