Prince Of Kolkata Set To Retire

His overrated because they're plenty of batsman around world cricket who are better then him and for him to rated amongst the likes of Tendulkar and Dravid is absolutely laughable.

Half of his ODI hundreds came against minnow nations aswell I think.

Great ambassitor (or however you spell it) for Indian cricket but if you consider Ganguly a legend then you use the term way to loosely.

I'll say one thing that I do not Respect Sourav Ganguly at all. From India I only respect Sachin Tendulkar

He was a very good test batsman, not a legend. For a time he looked like becoming an outstanding ODI player but he failed to consistantly push himself for that mantle. I think it's a pretty seflish decision, leaves him as also a ded-cert for the rest of the Test matches when he should have been dropped for poor form.

Pretty pathetic to see a lot of the India fans berating him for the last year now come out of the woodwork and portray him as some kind of genius also. Suppose it's the fickle nature of most Indian fans though.

He was a twat. I hated him for his time at Lancs when he never looked like he cared and just didn't have any passion in him whatsoever. What a complete waste of space. He has my respect as a decent international batsman, but his attitude was awful. I won't miss him in the slightest.

What do you want us to do then? Call him "stupid, idiot, etc". Its our nature. When someone leaves, we do not bring back the bad things about that person, and instead we focus on their positives and praise it. Its just our nature. You guys might not bring the positives into picture and praise them, but WE DO!

In our country when a person dies, however bad that person might have been, we still praise the person for the good things that he has done. You might think as if we are lifting him/her to the status of a genius but thats your way of seeing it.

P.s: The example of a person dying is just to compare. I am not saying that retiring from cricket is equivalent to dying.

yeah, becoz you like Andrew Flintoff..... Ganguly has no passion? WTF? he plays the most passionate among all Indian players in the past few generations. The level of passion displayed is also linked with the team for which he plays. If he doesnt connect properly with the team that he plays in, where will he get his passion from?

Matt was referring to his stint at Lancashire.

If he was a true legend most fans on here wouldn't have been so quick to stab him in the back. I won't deny he was a good player. He had all the facets to be an amazing player, but he never had the work ethic or correct attitude to achieve his full potential. He was a fantastic captain for you for a time, but that doesn't stop him from having a very select set of characteristics that aren't envious to see in a human being. He's shown it again by making a very selfish decision that will keep him in this series.

However I agree with Evo. He shouldn't need to connect him with a club. Lancashire, I'm sure, will have given him a VERY good wage for the period he was at the club. He should have wanted to repay them. I'm not saying an overseas player who doesn't score 1,500 runs plus a season or take 60 odd wickets isn't motivated enough to replace them, but if they aren't then they need to be showing the drive to at least want too. From most reports from that time, Ganguly was incredibly rude to team-mates, shouted many of them down horrendously, bullied them in the changing rooms and disrupted the harmony of the side.

Ganguly would have played in all the tests that he was selected for, even if he did not announce his decision. The captain is Kumble, and Kumble has this special liking for the seniors, the old age sentiment that these guys should be respected for their achievements no matter how much they fail in the present, etc. So Ganguly would have been the first choice over Badrinath if India played 7 batsman (incl. Dhoni). There was nothing selfish about it. On the contrary, many believe it is a deal eked out by the BCCI to phase out the seniors (no matter how much they deny it).

Ganguly wasn't as half a good batsman as he was a captain. That's what he will be remembered for.

Was Ganguly not selected just a little while a go for a game that is usually contested by the Indian first eleven? He had a competitor selected in the first squad with him so it looked like a straight choice between him and the other player (Badrinath, it was probably. Sorry I haven't kept up with cricket of late due to Politics work). Thus when he made the announcement it leaves the BCCI in a very difficult position to then leave him out of the starting 11. Although in all honesty he should have gone a year ago before he had the blots on his copy book he's suffered recently. Age hasn't been kind to Saurav and he's going to be one of the last players of a generation of international cricket that didn't have to be an outstanding fielder as well as their main role in the side. So he has somewhat of a legacy, I suppose.

Ganguly will be remembered mainly for his captaincy and yeah he was India's one of the best Aggressive Batsman but that does'nt take him close to Punter at all.

Its amazing isn't it? The amount of 'Crap' people cop out about a player who was litterally forced to retire...

Bullcrap

Are you talking about the Irani trophy match between the 'Rest of India and Delhi'? He was not selected for that match because of the selectors. Had he been in the team, he would have made it to the final XI. Thats what my point is. He knew that he has made it to the team of 14 or 15 (whatever) and he knew that he had the best chance of making the final XI. Still he retired because of some deal made between him and BCCI, or the reason he stated could be true also (that the threat to his daughter's life coupled with the pain of him being dropped for the Irani trophy match).

Although I agree that he is the weakest link of the Fab Four, he had an unfair treatment when he was dropped for the Irani trophy match, if you go by form (actually, i didnt want him there because I wanted him to quit). the other senior players also didnt perform in the same series, but Ganguly has the right to feel dejected that he was singled out for treatment. After his comeback in South africa, he has kept scoring runs for India most of the time though at times, he has not scored runs when it mattered (for example in australia, his run scoring was patchy).

He hasn't been unfairly treated. He hasn't performed well enough to warrant a place in your best 11 in recent times.
