Prince Of Kolkata Set To Retire

There's an utter exaggeration of this 'negativity' in this thread. People aren't being negative about Ganguly as a player, they're just trying to put him in a place in cricketing history which is fair. Whereas a lot of the Indian fans on here are proclaiming him one of the best ever, which he wasn't. He was a very, very, very good cricketer, but he's not one of the best ever.

The only time at which people are being negative towards him surrounds his attitude, and they are correct too. He was an arrogant, self-obsessed, petulant, bully of a spoilt child, but this isn't to say he wasn't a great cricket. He just wasn't a great guy. Besides, if Ganguly actually had the application, determination and the correct attitude, then he could well have been a far better player. Someone made the point about the jibs that Ganguly couldn't run between the wickets but still scored 9,000(?) ODI runs, well the lamentable fact about that is that if we had been up the standard of fitness of the typical international cricketer now then he could have scored many more.

Well, thats your opinion. He is one of the best ever! Just because some non-Indian fans say that he isnt, doesnt make it a fact. He has been a part of the "Fab Four" that the top 4 Indian batsmen are called, and has won so many matches for India with his bat, and is highly respected by the opposition and other teams around the world.

He was arrogant, self obsessed, OK. But still, he succeeded so big in the international stage. And are all the other best cricketers in the world, saints? Its just that this guy's things have been widely publicised across the media. There are many others whose attitude and behavior might stink when we come to know of it.

He scored more then 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Obviously that makes him one of the best ever - ODI at least - batsman to ever grace the game.

You guys call him snooty, arrogant, self obsessed, etc yet he was the one who picked up the pieces after the matchfixing scandles with so much success?
That he was the one who got India playing as a team, challenging the best in the world and reaching the world cup finals? A captain who brought the best out of each and every player, the first captain to blood youth, who won us a series against Australia, tied them up again in their own backyard, against Pakistan in one of the most heated series between the rivals, a fantastic series against England... the list goes on.

If he was arrogant, snooty, selfobsessed or what have you, he couldn't have achieved such feats, nor would he have been India's greatest captain ever.

His aggression is misjudged for arrogance, just shows how little you know about Ganguly.

He was mainly an opening batsmen and did his job, the job what his team wanted. Stick around, score, if possible, go for the big scores.

Ganguly is better than all the players in bold(ODI Format).Ganguly has scored 11,000+runs and has taken 100 wickets. He is the fifth player to do so after Sachin,Kapil Dev, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jacques Kallis. You can't compare ganguly with dravid in odi. Dravid has played more match and scored 10,000 runs but sourav has played less matches than dravid and scored 11,000 runs. He has a best score of 183.Some cricketers average is below 40.00 and Dada's average has never dip below 40!And he is the second captain for India after Kapil Dev to take India to the finals of a WC!
Ganguly is a minnow basher. His scored like 20 ODI centuries and like 8 of them have come against minnow teams.

All of the batsman you highlighted in bold are better overall batsman.

Also you are wrong because Pietersen, Hayden, Gilchrist, Clarke, Hussey, Dravid, Smith, Gibbs, Chanderpaul, Mohammad Yousuf & Inzamam ul-Haq were all better ODI batsman then what Sourav Ganguly is.

Sorry Ben, I agree with your general point, about those other players being better than him, but Ganguly's not just a minnow basher. He has 15 Test Centuries, but only 3 of them came against Minnow opposition. He then has 22 ODi centuries, with only 8 coming against Minnows. Most of his hundreds in ODi cricket have come against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa. With 4 against Sri Lanka, and 3 against both New Zealand and South Africa.

He's not got a fantastic record when it comes to hundreds though. For the amount of Tests he's played, you'd be expecting a guy to have far more hundreds than 15. I also don't think his Test Average of 41.93 stands up against the likes of Ponting, Hussey, Inzamam, Jayawardene, Pietersen, Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Kallis, he's just not in that league. I'm not doubting that he's been a good player for India throughout his career, or doubting his personality, as I don't know enough about the man, but I just don't think he's anywhere near good enough to be compared to any of the players mentioned above.

Let's leave this and wish ganguly great luck in his future. :D........

Jaya,Inzi,Hayden and the others that you guys have mentioned do bat well. They have also done very well in Tests compared to Sourav, whose Test record isnt really that great. But above all,you cant take away 10,000 runs scored by the man in ODIs and I doubt that 7000 of these have come against minnows.

Just one thing last thing lads - He has,is and will always be the world's best offside player... !

Btw,any idea on what he'll do after he retires ?
I'm guessing cricket commentary-maybe with ESS

Following are the chances

1. Play in IPL and ruin our chance
2. Play Football for Chirag FC
3. Stick with Chirag Computers crap and all
4. Look after his hotel business
5. Get dance training from his wife :p
6. Spend his rest of his life with the interest from bank ;)

You people called minnows but from 2003 to all the way 1995 the minnows teams were good. Kenya was good they made it so semifinal of world cup and so was Zimbabwe.

Just because they somehow made it to the semi finals doesn't make them good. Pakistan didn't qualify for the second round. Were they bad then??

Anyway. Back on topic. When I saw this news on cricinfo, I was really shocked to see my favourite Indian player to retire. He has been a great player and I love his off-side shots:D Really makes me try more and more off-side shots:p

Haha yeah, so stupid of them.

They must be thinking Ganguly is arrogant because he took of his shirts when India won the Natwest series or may be because he owned Stuart Broad with his bat and words and made him piss in his pants.

Check out Ganguly's batting versus spinners, esp Saqlain whom he used to thrash every time.
